Facts and opinions

Legacy management: An old challenge with a new focus
Following the cessation of hostilities after the end of the Second World War, many physicists turned to studying wartime nuclear technologies with a new purpose: using nuclear energy as an alternative energy source to gas and oil. With so many nations hoping to improve their generation capacity, the development of nuclear reactors thus grew quickly in the 20th century, resulting in over 400 nuclear power plants worldwide today.

NEA support to Fukushima Daiichi decommissioning strategy planning
Six years after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident, the Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Holdings, Inc. (TEPCO) are shifting their focus to strategy planning for long-term challenges related to the decommissioning of the damaged reactors.

Facts and opinions

The NEA Nuclear Innovation 2050 Initiative
The NEA launched its Nuclear Innovation 2050 (NI2050) Initiative with the aim of identifying research and development (R&D) strategies and associated priorities to achieve commercial readiness of innovative, sustainable nuclear fission technologies in a fast and cost-effective way. As defined at the beginning of the process, these R&D strategies would be elaborated with NEA stakeholders at large, in particular involving nearly all NEA committees, nuclear research organisations, industry, regulators and technical safety organisations.

The International Framework for Nuclear Energy Cooperation (IFNEC)
The International Framework for Nuclear Energy Cooperation (IFNEC) brings together 34 participant countries, 31 observer countries and 4 observer organisations, according to its Statement of Mission, "to explore mutually beneficial approaches to ensure the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes proceeds in a manner that is efficientand meets the highest standards of safety, security and non-proliferation".

Facts and opinions

Assessing the full costs of electricity
For decades, economists, energy specialists and policymakers have been satisfied with assessing the comparative costs of electricity generation on the basis of discounted average costs over the lifetime and the total output of a generating plant. As a standardised form of cost-benefit accounting (CBA), these levelised costs of electricity (LCOE) indicate the required expenditures in terms of capital, fuel, and operations and management (O&M), adjusted for their incidence in time or the different technology options per unit of output (i.e. a MWh of electricity).

Nuclear power plant decommissioning costs in perspective
At the international level, actual experience is limited in the completion of nuclear power plant decommissioning projects. Cost data for decommissioning projects are thus largely unavailable, with few examples of analyses or comparisons between estimates and actual costs at the project level.
