I am officially no longer a graduate student. I was discriminated against because of my disability and forced to leave my program. Academia, we need to talk 🧵1/13 , ,

A meme of Wile E. Coyote running towards a painting of a road which has been placed in front of a precipice. A sign says “Danger end of road” but Mr. Coyote has run past it. The text over Mr. Coyote is “Me, a grad student.” The text over the painting is “Career doing what I love.” The text in the void beyond the cliff is: poverty wages, anxiety, depression, guilt, no job security, apartments forever, work is my hobby, proper dental care? Lol, starting a family at 40, 60 hour work week.

Do you know how heart wrenching it is every time a student asks me if they can safely disclose their disability for a job/fellowship/school app? And I have to tell them "it's up to you but here are the risks." I really wish that discussion were unnecessary.

Pro tip for new grad students: label things YYYY-MM-DD (data, samples, presentations). When you’ve been here for years, being able to quickly find data/presentations by the year makes everything so much easier

Now that I write copy, I pay close attention to my writing. Academics and PhDs, listen up. Write for your reader. It’s not just about the ideas—it’s about the way that you invite your reader to engage with them.

Never take career advice off someone with vested interests in you staying in academia or from someone who never left academia so doesn't even know what industry is like.

What’s a successful PhD? If you have learned, shared findings, grown during 5 years while being a kind colleague - that’s success. What you contribute to the society as a PhD (and after) comes in a variety of flavors - not just pubs and grants

My PhD hasn't gone the way I envisioned it would. I didn't accomplish everything I wanted to but I've grown and learned alot. That is enough. I am enough.

We were supposed to meet local cacao farmers this morning. Mistakenly, the organizers thought we wanted to meet local college students. Long story short, we ended up having a talk about motivation and grad school. How is your field research going? 🙃
