Dr. Whitney Pirtle’s Tweets

This is one of the most useful things I’ve learned from Ruthie’s work—“change everything” is not a nihilistic assessment of the world, but rather the most open invitation to struggle there is.

Another question since I am still in major planning mode. For fac and students. Is is still the norm to assign 4-5 articles for one graduate course meeting? And is this thought to be equivalent to one book? Which approach do you think works best for a survey course? #SocTwitter

Curious for faculty w/o admin roles, in a typical month, how many hours of your time is slated for standing meetings (non-teaching, non solo writing)? #AcademicChatter

Yea. Not sure what schools rejected me but know it was 5+ and more than my acceptances but it doesn’t matter to me. my tactic for when I get a NO is to let that ship sail baby ⛵️It’s the YES that sticks 📍

This whole posting your grad school rejections and acceptances feels like some weird flex. Like, “I was rejected from Yale, but I got into Harvard” is the vibe I get from a lot of these.

My 11 yo has to run a mile on Friday’s at school. He hit 6:17 today!! This is 🤯 to me because it seems quite fast for someone who doesn’t run outside of school AND it means I can’t beat him in races of any distance anymore sheesh 🏃🏾🏃🏾🏃🏾

Good morning! Our paper on metropolitan residential segregation is out in Demographic Research. New methods for segregation research, restricted-use microdata, loads of interesting findings. It's open-access 🙂

One thing I’m proud of as I make this tenure leap is that I spoke, wrote, and showed my truth. “Lay low” for a few years might mean you no longer know how to stand up
Quote Tweet
Many of the people I know who needed to "lay low" before getting tenure because they didn't want to mix up in "controversial topics" on campus are in their 15th year of laying low. Tenure doesn't release you. It reveals you.

The retirement of Stephen Breyer, 83, who was appointed by Bill Clinton in 1994, sets the stage for an immensely important decision by the President. This will be a monumental decision in presidential history to appoint a Black women to the highest court.

I’m catching up on emails which means 60% of them start with “sorry for my delay” or “thanks for re-sending”. I need and accept all of the grace and patience 🙏🏾
