I started advocating for just over two years ago. We've built a community - together. I have run a range of different initiatives to raise awareness and reduce the stigma around mental health. Here is an outline of some of my projects to date ⬇️

All behavior is communication. When students miss class, cheat, miss deadlines, and don't engage in class how you'd like, they're communicating. They may be communicating that the class is uninteresting or unclear, or that their lives are complex. Are you listening?

My favourite thing* on here is when people are like "you forgot about this though" based on a tweet. Like it's 240 characters, not an essay? *Not my favourite thing.

I hope that this is the start of a greater push to acknowledge that stepping back to look after your mental health is essential for succeeding, and that prioritising well-being is simply a sensible thing to do.

We've got to understand that to not make the cut in academia, or to be seen as average, is still outstanding. Everyone is capable. The opportunities to succeed are not equal.

Once we ditch the idea that immigrants must over-achieve to be deserving of the same level of respect, rights and rewards as non-immigrants then we can talk about fairness and equality.

Time for a reintroduction. I'm Zoë. I'm a Senior Scientist in the water industry, trained analytical chemist, and mental health advocate. I live with depression and anxiety. I am driving for better in academia so people like me can thrive not just survive 🌻

I just keep thinking about the hate Emma Raducanu would have likely received if she had lost the US Open from people FROM the UK.

If someone tells you it's just hard work needed to get faculty position because they did it, show them this. This competition fuels the culture of overwork which is unsustainable for many. There's both luck and privilege involved in making it to the top too.

Graphic showing Since 1982, almost 800,000 PhDs were awarded in science and engineering (S&E) fields, whereas only about 100,000 academic faculty positions were created in those fields within the same time frame. The cumulative change over time shows a huge increase in PhDs awards, showing competition for jobs has gone from almost 1:1 to 8:1 from 1982 to 2011.

"Well I managed to navigate academia just fine" is called survivor bias.

Wondering if I write my book about the realities and difficulties of doing a PhD I might just deflate people not empower them? I think there is power in being seen and how your feeling being acknowledged? I'd write in survival tips too ofc, but I cannot fix academia in 80k words.
