Provider Education and Training
VA has a variety of resources available for community providers to equip you with the knowledge needed to successfully provide care to Veterans. This page contains the latest education and training resources offered for VA community providers.
Required Training
Community providers are required to complete the Community Care Provider–Opioid Safety Initiative training course and fill out a form attesting to completion of the course (VA MISSION Act, Section 131).
It is also highly recommended community providers complete the MISSION Act Section 133 general overview course, Community Care Provider–A Perspective for Veteran Care.

VA offers online, on-demand training for community providers at no-cost through the VHA TRAIN website. Continuing medical education (CME) credits may be earned for completing VA trainings.

Continuing Medical Education Courses
To supplement the Section 133: A Perspective for Veteran Care training, specialty courses were developed and are available on the VHA TRAIN MISSION Act curriculum training site. Each of these courses offer continuing education credits (CEUs) to various continuing education organizations.
Per MISSION Act, Section 123, VA offers an online, no-cost, continuing medical education curriculum for community providers through VHA TRAIN. Courses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and continuing medical education (CME) credits may be earned for completing coursework. Providers must create an account in VHA TRAIN and include a National Provider Identification (NPI) number in their VHA TRAIN profile before registering and completing courses.

The series includes a recurring webinar that provides an introduction and overview of community care, and accredited recurring monthly webinars on clinical topics. See the webinar schedule below.
VHA Office of Integrated Veteran Care: In this series of live webinars, participants will receive an overview of community care which includes the background of community care networks, programs, and the corresponding VA regulations. In-depth discussions on topics from referrals and authorizations, authorized and unauthorized emergency care, urgent care, claims and more. This webinar takes place in February, April, June, August, October, and December.
