In December, unemployment rates were higher in 7 states, lower in 5 states, and stable in 38 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment decreased in 1 state and was essentially unchanged in 49 states and the District.

November jobless rates down over the year in 235 of 389 metro areas; payroll jobs up in 95

Jobless rates were lower in November than a year earlier in 235 of the 389 metropolitan areas, higher in 133, and unchanged in 21. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 95 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 294.

Annual average unemployment rates decreased in 49 states and the District of Columbia in 2021, while the rate was little changed in 1 state. Employment-population ratios increased in 38 states and the District, decreased in 1 state, and were little changed in 11 states.

38 large metro areas had over-the-year decreases in unemployment rates in November 2022

Thirty-eight of 51 large metropolitan areas had decreases in unemployment rates over the year ended November 2022, while 9 of these areas had increases and 4 had no change. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California, and New Orleans-Metairie, Louisiana, experienced the largest decreases, 1.6 percentage points each. read more »
