In December, unemployment rates were higher in 7 states, lower in 5 states, and
stable in 38 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment
decreased in 1 state and was essentially unchanged in 49 states and the District.

areas, higher in 133, and unchanged in 21. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over
the year in 95 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 294.
