the contradictions of extractivism will be resolved when the globe adopts the "having a big martial arts tournament between Gundams where the winning country gets to rule the world for ten years" governance system, as first put forward in the seminal text Mobile Fighter G Gundam

As an Internet early adopter nerd one of the things I’m not enthusiastic about is the fragmentation of social polities. There’s a lot of things that would benefit from it, but the universal quality to Twitter is an essential proposition & I can’t take those substitutes in kind.

no clue what's happening on this hellsite. eagerly awaiting somewhere else with similar vibes: somewhere I can discuss the finer points of anime, ecological economics, and dialectical materialism with randos w/ display names like "MegantheeBattalion" and "Timothee Shalamar"

Feels like a purge of journalists happening this evening, including Aaron Rupar, or it could be they will be back in an hour. No-one really knows what the policies are, or how they are being enforced, or with what consequences.

2023 will be the year that journalists, en masse, will finally think of themselves as workers, predicts . “Even a public service is still a service, and even the most high-minded reporters still have to pay the rent.” ✊🏻

When people fight for new prisons for women because of sexual violence at existing prisons, I think of what ruth wilson gilmore says, "the prison didn't assault them, the people did." New jails and prisons don't stop harm. They transfer them to more shiny buildings

“The epidemic of sexual assaults against female prisoners in federal custody has prompted the Justice Department to expand the use of a program to provide early releases to women abused behind bars.” nytimes.com/2022/12/13/us/

Morocco doesnt seem to be able to cope with French pressure in the midfield. Playing okay in the other two thirds but they'd have more chances with less panicky possession

they find that fixing up vacants can affect gun violence. Not the first ecological intervention to have effects like this - see studies on streetlights for example. all sorts of better uses of public resources than cuffing and caging

Bottom line, fixing abandoned houses is linked to reduced gun violence in this randomized controlled trial. We have mounting evidence that simple, structural, low cost interventions to the neighborhood environment can improved health & safety in Black neighborhoods.

one thing I always wondered about Broken Windows theory: if you thought that "broken windows" led to crime, why wouldn't you just fix the windows? thanks to Dr. South and her colleagues here, a new RCT in on gun violence

Homicide is the leading cause of death for Black males age 1-44. It makes me sick. What if I told you going from A to B reduces nearby gun violence in Black neighborhoods? Well, it does and we showed it in an RCT. Out today in @JAMAInternalMed. Short 🧵.

.'s team at Penn tackled the question of whether home repairs prevent gun violence with the same rigorous approach doctors use to study a new drug: a randomized, controlled trial. The results left little doubt. on the new study.

At least 5 arrests have been made of forest defenders, with charges carrying 5-35 years. This is an outrage — Atlanta loves to talk about its history of protest while brutalizing and incarcerating protesters who do the same today. #StopCopCity

There are so many conversations among Goma expats about conspiracy theories in the DRC...but almost never is there acknowledgement of the "expat conspiracy theories," namely the fervent belief in a "benevolent international community invested in peace and security in Congo."
