We hired a company based in Columbus, Ohio to install a Generac 20KW back-up generator which runs on natural gas at our home in January 2010 after receiving a coupon in a monthly mailer. We checked the company on the Better Business Bureau web site. While they were not perfect, all complaints had been resolved at the time. When the installer was unresponsive to some maintenance issues after they performed the first year's annual maintenance service, we hired Riverside Electric in February 2011 to perform the annual maintenance going forward. A warranty issue with the starter arose before 2012 maintenance would have been due, and Riverside came out promptly to take care of the issue. In doing so, they advised that they believed the wiring done by the original installer to be faulty and not code compliant. Furthermore, the generator had not been installed on a level surface as is the best practice recommended by the manufacturer. Riverside advised us to obtain an electrical inspection of the original work by IBI and, when the work failed IBI's inspection, we would then be able to require the original installer to correct the defective work at the installer's expense. We did so, but discovered that the original installer had gone out of business. Riverside performed the work necessary to correct the original installer's faulty work. Riverside was not inexpensive, but the work was far more complicated than an original installation would have been. First Riverside had to undo the faulty work, and then rewire everything correctly. Our advice to anyone who has had a back-up generator installed without first obtaining an electrical permit would be to obtain the permit after the fact as soon as possible, and have the work inspected to make sure it is code-compliant. If it is not, then require the original installer correct the work now, before attempting to sell the home in the future when the original installer may be out of business by that time

I worked with Joshua on the generator size. He was great to work with and very helpful in choosing the right size for the house. I set up the install for the day before Thanksgiving. My wife was home for the install. The install crew was on time and did a great job. my wife worked with the electrician to ensure the appropriate circuits were covered. He offered suggestions to ensure our needs were met. Riverside took care of the permits and came back for the inspection. The inspector found no issues. The generator kicked on once since the install and it worked as advertised. Overall it was a great experience. If Riverside provided residential electrical work, I would not hesitate to call them. Joshua and his crew did a great job and the install went as advertised

Scott McDonald came to the house, evaluated existing electrical service and our needs, discussed an installation site and provided an overview of the Generac options we should consider. Over the next few days we were in contact with Scott via phone and e-mail and made a final selection on the generator size and options we wanted. Contract required 40% down to order generator and get on the install schedule. Once the generator was received by Riverside they scheduled a three day install process. First day a concrete pad ( free with Angie's list coupon ) and the generator were installed. Next day the smart switch install and electrical connections were completed. Third day the propane was connected and the unit started up. After everything was checked out the generator operation was reviewed with us. Overall this has been a great experience and we are very happy with the results

Brian and Todd did a great job. They began by installing the outside retrofitting of the electrical service and pipes for propane hookups. By the afternoon, they were make the adjustments to inside service, ran new wiring and completed installation of unit. They worked independently and involved us in decisions before they "assumed" otherwise. As a result, we think the unit will work just as we wanted it to. They completed the job in a day and even ran the vacuum cleaners inside the house and swept and cleaned the patio in the back. Very professional and thorough, but also treated us like we were important to them

He had a detailed estimate ready within 48 hours and I was able to schedule the work for the next week. While Brandon’s employee actually performed the work, Brandon was here at the start of the work and available by phone as needed. Since the wiring had to be accessed through the crawlspace under the kitchen, I’m sure this wasn’t considered a quick or easy job. Price was fair, Brandon is super professional, and I will definitely hire him again

The installer came by and gave me a quote, which was below another estimate I received from another vendor. He sounded very experienced and said the install would be routine. On installation day, the generator was delivered with a small cosmetic flaw on the outside. The installer came up with a good solution for a skirt and we agreed to continue. The installation went very well, with Bill from Blessed Plumbing doing the natural gas work and Herschel doing the electrical wiring. No problems, the system was tested and the installation took about 5 hours. About 2 weeks later a technician from JD easily installed the plastic skirt around the unit. All work done was extremely professional...everyone knew exactly what to do and how to do it

Paul at Perfect Climate is my first call when anything goes wrong with the not-so-great furnace/AC/heat pump that are installed in our 25-year-old house. At the moment, we can't afford to upgrade our whole HVAC system, so Paul fixes the problems when they arise and helps us get as much time out of our units as possible. On this visit, our A/C had stopped working. The outdoor unit wouldn't even turn on. He came out and found very quickly that the capacitor had gone bad. He replaced it on the spot, and ta-da, the A/C started working again. More importantly, though, he noted that the outdoor unit had been mounted very poorly. The original mounting brackets weren't drilled far enough into the foundation so they had fallen, and rather than having it re-mounted, one of the previous owners had propped up the unit on bricks, and it was falling over. Paul gave us an estimate to re-mount the unit, and we called a few days later to schedule the service

I chose Bertke as an alternative based on their quoted price to service the unit to determine the failure of the generator to exercise, i.e. self-start, every 2 weeks. The service person used my installation and service manuals and after 1 1/2 hours found the cause to be loose wires. The system has self-started every 2 weeks and during 3 recent Duke Electric power outages. I also received a callback from the supervisor the next day to check on my satisfaction. I saved over 60% by using Bertke Electric. They have to purchase replacement parts from Buckeye Power Sales (the distributor) but their per hour labor rate beats Buckeye Power Sales hands down
