Reviews in San Francisco to Install Central AC

A-1 Heating and Cooling

No call no show on installation day. I had to call twice looking for them, once after two hours late, then after 5 hours late. Finally rescheduling for following day. They did show on time next day after i threatened to cancel the sale altogether. Workers arrived on time and were professional. Was told it was a one day job when sold to me, but it turned into 2.5 days with the wasted no show day. Price was good enough. Not much detail to any of the paperwork on warranties by the company. Was just happy it is over. AC is working fine. Not sure I would recommend simply because of the no show day one which was upsetting, Otherwise things went fine and as expected overall.

The owner Dale, returned my phone call and we made an appointment for an estimate. He arrived right on schedule. He looked at my current furnace (installed 17 years ago) and indicated that, although not quite as efficient as the newest ones, it should not be replaced. He gave me a bid on the air conditioner and an optional air filter. After my 2nd bid and some research, I asked him about the model air conditioner he recommended (Trane XB13) vs. the Trane XR13. The latter has a longer warranty and a bit more sound installation. He indicated that he felt the the XB13 was a better value. I opted to go with the XR 13 at $400 more. I also added the costs of duct cleaning. I made an appointment for the installation. The two installers arrived at the appointed time (9 AM). They presented me the revised estimate which I signed and the work started. During the installation I noticed that the air filter had not been installed and indicated the price included it. I failed to note that it was not on the revised bid. We called Dale, went over the bids, and he quickly agreed that a mistake had been made. He had another worker bring this to the site and it was installed. Due to the layout of my installation, the workers had a challenge running a drain and also routing a new wire to the thermostat. They succeeded with both and completed the installation. They cleaned up thoroughly behind themselves. The only small error was that the panel to the attic was not closed properly and there were some fingerprints on it. Installation was completed at 4:30.

The repairman found that a fuse was blown. He replaced the fuse and advised me on how to replace them myself in the future and what to do to avoid blowing such fuses. Also discussed thermostat, then he moved the air vent to not blow on the thermostat, distorting the room temperature reading. Very professional and prompt.

I was looking for someone to check our furnace and air conditioner unit and provide basic maintenance. Nothing was wrong / broken, but both the furnace and air conditioner needed to be cleaned (at the least), and I wanted to make sure that they were both operating at optimal levels. I also thought this would be a good way to 'test' a provider in case we should experience any troubles in the future. I have had two appointments with J E Moore. Making the original appointment in Sep2010 was easy/straightforward... and J E Moore called me to schedule the pre-paid follow-up in Feb2011. Both times, the technician arrived at the scheduled time, and he was very polite and professional. I was surprised at how much time he took with each piece of equipment... After, he went over what he had done including a couple of adjustments, a number of tests and their results. The maintenance package I purchased is for four maintenance/service visits and include both air conditioner unit and furnace with appointments coinciding with the heating/cooling seasons. The 'package' also comes with other benefits -- I (luckily) have not yet had to take advantage of any of these. (P.S. -- No hard sell and no attempt to up sell.) The maintenance has definitely made a difference -- our gas usage has dropped significantly after the maintenance was performed when compared with the last three years, and although we have not had many 'hot' days, the air conditioner seems to be running more efficiently - it cycles on/off less frequently. We have more than made back the price of this maintenance contract. I have used other HVAC providers... and J E Moore far outperformed. I find J E Moore very honest and trustworthy.

For 2-3 years we had noticed that our house did not cool down adequately on hot days. After a recent hot spell, we decided to call an HVAC company to check it out. After finding AAA on Angies List, we made an appointment. On the day of the appointment, Monty arrived on time. He checked out the system, and told us that the refrigerant was low, and that this was probably the cause of our cooling problem. This made sense, and we asked him to service the unit. Within an hour, the refrigerant was recharged. From then on, we have noticed a big improvement in the AC, and it appears our problem is fixed.

This experience started on a positive when the phone was answered the first time I called and I was able to schedule an appointment. I appreciated not having to leave a voicemail and start a round of phone tag. On the day of the appointment, he was running early, so he called to see if an earlier time would work for me. I found him to be friendly and professional. He quickly diagnosed the problem and showed me the broken part. The best part is that he had the part with him so we were able to get my air conditioner working in one quick appointment. I am happy with the service and will use again.

I could not have asked for a better experience than I received from AAA Furnace. Like all providers, they educated me on the various furnace and air conditioning options that exist in the market. What set them apart is how they addressed a new code requirement for San Jose whereby the HVAC ducting in my home had to meet efficiency requirements. If you are in San Jose, you need to pay attention to this requirement when replacing your HVAC system. Basically, you can only have so much air flow leakage from your ducts and a separate contractor needs to conduct the test. I received three bids for this project. One bidder recommended replacing my entire ductwork for a cost of $6000. Another bidder had an add-on that I could purchase which seemed like a type of insurance. If the system didn't pass, they would come out and fix the problem if I had bought the add-on. If not, it would cost me a significant amount. AAA Furnace took a different approach where they first inspected my ducts and thought they were in good shape. They gave me advice that for my type of home, most air leakage occurred where the ducting connected to the register and recommended that I seal all of these. They also have their own testing machine and included a pre-test in the cost to make sure it could pass the first time. I felt they truly solved my problem at the lowest cost possible instead of using the situation to acquire a larger contract. They were also punctual, efficient in their work, and price competitive. I would highly recommend AAA Furnace.

DUKES HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING

At the beginning of a six-day heatwave with temps. in the hundreds, my central air conditioning unit broke. All repair companies were overloaded with customers, but I was able to get an appointment with Dukes scheduled for a few days in the future. The time window for them to arrive was between 11 and 2 on a Wed. On that day I received a phone call around 2 p.m. from the owner telling me he was running behind but that he would definitely come later; he estimated in a few hours. At 6:15 p.m. he arrived and he and another worker quickly diagnosed the problem (a blown capacitor and the main fan blades broken from the motor); they arranged a temporary fix so that I would have air conditioning in the interim until they returned in a few days to replace the old unit, which I decided to do. That temporary fix was a life saver to me as the inside temp. in my home had been in the nineties for days. They scheduled to return early Sat. morning to install the new unit. However, I got a call on Friday asking if they could come that afternoon instead since another customer had changed his afternoon appointment; naturally I agreed. They came at the time scheduled and within an hour and a half had installed the new unit which worked perfectly. They removed the old unit and left the area clean. I found all three of the workers, including the owner, to be extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The work was well done, although I was rather surprised at the cost of the new unit, but it definitely was worth it.

Recent Review: I'm a repeat customer. They did a full kitchen demo, design and remodel for our townhouse in 2012. In both the previous job and this year's job (full kitchen, family room, and master bathroom demo, design and remodel), the work was excellent, the quotation was accurate and their timeline was strictly followed. This job was much more complicated but they finished the initially quoted job within seven weeks of starting (late January 2015 to mid March 2015). There were several changes we made mid-project that had to be wrapped up a little later. Kitchen and related work: Demo including removal of floor tile, cabinets, old appliances, old light fixtures, partial wall removal; moving sink and associated plumbing, moving vents and associated HVAC, removing bigger window and replacing with smaller window; update electrical panel for house to meet updated kitchen appliance power requirements; install new LED lights and switches, install new cabinets and appliances; install new sink and quartz counters and subway tile backsplash, install new floor tile, new texture and paint, install new baseboards Family room and related work (next to kitchen): Demo including removal of old carpet, wainscoting, partial wall removal; install new LED lights and light/fan and switches; install new hardwood floor, stain hardwood to match existing hallway, install new baseboards; install new structural support beams and concrete footing. Assorted work around the house: installing room lights and fans in all bedrooms and installing blower in guest bathroom. Overall we were very happy with our completed project and would happily hire this vendor and recommend this vendor to others. For the sake of completeness I list the key pros and a few minor cons. Pros 1. Design and End Result - Mark, the company owner and a senior designer, listened carefully to what changes we wanted to make and provided 3D design drawings in a short amount of time. We had two other contractors bid on this project and we did not get any initial sketches from them verifying that they understood what our final target layout was. One of the contractors wouldn't even agree verbally that he would put the sink where we wanted it. With Mark we knew that what he drafted for us after our initial on-site consult was what they planned to do and if we had any changes we could mark up the design draft and discuss. The work contract is very detailed as well so I feel like they do their best to document and then meet or exceed expectations. 2. Timeline and Schedule - I've heard many horror stories of contractors dragging their feet and missing deadlines. I'm always impressed how well ADH schedules its work and workers so that there are no surprises as far as work progress. They do what needs to be done to meet the contracted schedule. They did start the bathroom and kitchen at the same time and they were planning to finish at the same time but the bathroom did finish first due to some structural work that had to be done on a load bearing wall in the kitchen. Also we added many work items to the initial quotation and they were very agreeable about incorporating it into the initial schedule, to my surprise. 3. Crew - The on-site crew (headed by Vlad B.) were professional and courteous and approachable. As Mark says they are part of the family business. They took pride in their work and they cleaned up every day. I felt very comfortable working around them when I was at home. They were very respectful of our home. Every so often there would be area experts from their staff (hardwood floor install, wall texture, shower marble install) too and they were professional and courteous as well. Cons 1. Payment - After the initial designs are provided there is pressure to put down a deposit to proceed. Given that they were the only vendor that provided designs upfront I think I understand their desire to get a financial commitment but it may surprise some customers. 2. Structural Support - Work was started without knowing for sure if the walls we wanted removed were load bearing. We found out later there would need to be structural reinforcement. We did have to slow down work on the kitchen while that unscheduled issue was addressed but everything eventually got back on schedule. We had several discussions with Mark though and we clarified that the structural support had to be sufficient for a possible second floor addition in the future. 3. Details - We caught some details before installation (noticed some measurement marks in kitchen for placement of fridge and nearby cabinets was off) and a few things had to be addressed after installation (design drawing for bathroom had cabinet above toilet but it was missing from work contract - I should have noticed that earlier, at install, was missing some drawers to be installed in bathroom). Even though we've worked with this vendor before, in general, with a big contracting job it's important to check the details regularly (such as every day) independently by reviewing the contract and informally by discussing latest progress with the on-site project lead. Communication is key.

Recent Review: We live in a mild climate, but summer days seem to be getting hotter so we had our first AC installed. Had several quotes ranging from very thorough to perfunctory. One in particular was tempting in it's professionalism and presentation. But it was also $2,000 more expensive than the one we went with, NWP Heating & Air Conditioning. We were struck more by their no nonsense professionalism than by their sales presentation. On paper it didn't seem that we were going to get all the bells and whistles that the more expensive estimate offered. But in fact, Cesar and his NWP team did perform outstanding service, not only installing the condenser and evaporator and all the switches, wiring, duct sealing, etc, but even repaired insulation and ducts connected to our heating unit. They did the work efficiently, cleanly, and with professional dispatch. Got bells and whistles and at less the expense. Good work. Very pleased.

Recent Review: Our friend referred us to Bay Easy and we couldn't be more delighted with Ofer and his team. Prior to updating the bathrooms, they looked dark and small. Removing the walls changed the look dramatically, now it looks modern and brighter. We tried to do some of the demolition ourselves but Ofer helped clean up our mess to keep up on schedule. The crew were always punctual, polite and professional. Rebecca the designer helped us through the entire process of picking the right materials to make my bathrooms look bright and chic. Now that we have a new HVAC system, we can beat the Patterson heat which is awesome. Ofer and his team are great contractors, I couldn't recommend him and his team highly enough!

Recent Review: We have chosen Richards heating and AC to replace and move our furnace to the attic. We have done extensive research and received a few quotes, but at the end, what made us make up our minds and choose Richards - is the way we were not pressured into agreement, but rather given time to make our own choice and were given quite honest feedback and explanations for how to choose best furnace/ AC combo to meet our needs. It's rare when a company takes time to thoroughly explain the pros and cons of different models so we could understand our options. We did have one minor incident where they replaced the ducting and wanted to give us a surprise charge or $3500 after. We said we never asked for the ducts to be replaced and this additional charge was removed so all was good. We were scheduled for work pretty fast and are very happy with the way the crew did their work. Jose, Cole, and Olim were very professional and accommodative.. Arrived on time and always cleaned everything up at the end of the day. They also included us on some decisions vs just choosing it for us – like the intake placement and ac placement. We are very pleased with the results: much quieter furnace and perfect flow from air registers.

Recent Review: everything was perfect. they came when promised, did an extremely high-quality installation with all the bells & whistles, and even did some stuff that wasn't included in the contract such as installing a free carbon monoxide detector. the workmanship was top-notch. i have absolutely no complaints of any kind. john roncone was superb. the best part was their price, $11,000 after $2,650 in PG&E rebates. their competitor Moore Heating & A/C quoted me $21,000 net after rebates for the EXACT same Carrier system, the same furnace and A/C model numbers even. and Simpson's price included larger diameter ducting than Moore quoted, and a 2nd air intake which Moore did not include. I SAVED TEN THOUSAND BUCKS -- and got a top-quality system. at my job, i have supervised installation of commercial HVAC systems of up to 50 tons in our office buildings of up to 25,000 square feet and am VERY familiar with HVAC from a buyer's standpoint. Simpson's is THE BEST i ever dealt with.

Recent Review: Initially I contacted ABC to repair a faulty furnance on a weekend in the winter of 2012. They were one of a very few companies who offer service on the weekend. They responded within an hour. A blower motor was found defective. Unfortunately, it had to be ordered, which took over a week. The new blower was installed succesfully. The technician suggested we get a quote for a new furnance, which we did, since it was about 15 years old. We had a new furnance and central air conditioner installed in March 2012. The installation took almost 2 full days but without any issues. Technicians were professional and well trained. The installation was inspected by a City of San Jose building inspector. He mentioned that he was familiar with ABC's work and didn't expect any issues based upon his experience with the company. He found no issues and passed the installation. It has been working fine for amost one year.

What do customers in San Francisco say about Central AC Installation?
