ABOUT BATREE
BATREE is a nationwide initiative run by GreenPak Coop for the recycling of batteries. The new BATREE scheme is replacing the previous government run Batterina campaign.
WHERE should I dispose of batteries?
You may drop off your used batteries for recycling in the hundreds of BATREE recycling bins found at leading supermarkets, stationeries, schools and local councils across Malta and Gozo.

WHY should batteries be disposed properly?
Used batteries disposed of incorrectly will seriously damage the environment. Harmful substances such as heavy metals, will be released which will contaminate the soil, underground or surface waters. Heavy metals in batteries also have harmful effects on human health.
Through recycling of metal substances contained in batteries, significant saving in material and energy consumption can be achieved.
TYPE of batteries collected
The following are the types of batteries collected by the scheme: AA, AAA, Button, C, D, 6V, 9V & mixed batteries.
Vehicle and industrial batteries are NOT collected by this scheme.
FACTS
Over 2 million batteries are imported to the Maltese Islands each year.
Most people only think about batteries when the battery in one of the devices has been used up. If we think about the devices which use a battery, we realise that in every room of the house batteries are used in several devices. Items such as wall clocks, smoke alarms, flashlights, cordless phones, radios, remote controls, game controllers, hand-held gaming devices, wireless computer mouse, wireless keyboards etc.
