WebP Support in WP 5.8

WordPress 5.8 supports the WebP format, and may require some improvements at the hosting level. For the system to be lossless, ImageMagick is required.

Please check the comments on the post WordPress 5.8 adds WebP support.

We have some pending things:

  • Design: There are some design proposals at Figma (I don’t have access, and don’t know how to use it), but there are some ideas there.
  • Meetup: We need to define the first Official English Meetup. @Crixu is working on that
  • Meetup: @JavierCasares will do a Cache Meetup in Spanish (around July 3er week?).
  • Testing: @JavierCasares will test the streaming.

Hosting Team meeting summary 2021-05-19

After listing the items on the agenda, some extra items that have been discussed and deserve to be in the summary.

Handbook

About the manifest, we had some discussion about the order in those pages. There is the possibility to add somehow the order in the JSON, or do it directly using the “order priority” at the Handbook pages (right now is how is it).

Test Runner

WordPress Hosting Live

Last week we had an introduction with the community team about the topic based meetup for Hosting. Since Friday the meetup is officially hosted by WordPress with @JavierCasares and @Crixu as the Co-Hosts.

The Global Meetup Hosting will be the first pilot having global topic Meetups.

We’re now continuing to plan the first meetup. If you would like to participate and have a talk ready for it feel free to ping us.

Follow us at Meetup/WPHosting.

Handbook

There are some PRs for the Handbook:

WordPress Hosting Live

We continue with the analysis of the best solution for the WordPress Hosting Live project, the meetup for professionals in the world of hosting and WordPress.

@javiercasares has been talking with @_dorsvenabili about the best solution for the WordPress Hosting Live broadcast.

  1. The Hosting team’s talks that are going to be directed to “end users” could be given within the Learn WordPress Meetups, always focused with a didactic spirit. If anyone is interested in giving a talk they can talk to the Learn WordPress team or contact one of the Team Reps who will facilitate contact with the team.
  2. Hosting team talks aimed at “hosting professionals” could be done through a new Meetup channel. It is pending to pass access to the WordPress team, but I have the Meetup WordPress Hosting created.
In the coming days the Community team will be asked to join the WordPress Meetup Pro.
  3. We would use a channel within the WordPress YouTube specifically for Hosting. For broadcasting we could use StreamYard or similar.
It remains to talk to the Community team to see if we can make use of the channel or create our own channel.

Handbook

There are some PRs for the Handbook:

WordPress Hosting Live

We continue with the analysis of the best solution for the WordPress Hosting Live project, the meetup for professionals in the world of hosting and WordPress.

@javiercasares will talk with the Community team to find the best solutions that the rest of the teams are currently using and thus have a common offer for all.

The proposal for the talks would be to make an introduction of 5-10 minutes by the presenters, then the talk / presentation of about 50 minutes and finally a space of about 30 minutes for questions.

The goal will be to make a monthly presentation in English, with the possibility of having interspersed presentations in other languages (@javiercasares has shown interest in making some in Spanish).

WordPress Hosting Page/Site

The Hosting team has made a proposal to the Meta team on how the new Hosting page could be updated. The goal is to propose a simpler and more standardized system when proposing a new WordPress hosting provider and that everyone has the same options.

This system is intended to facilitate the analysis and approval, which could be done by a sub team within the Hosting Team with people who are and know the world of hosting but do not work directly in any hosting company and thus avoid conflicts of interest.

In a next step the proposal would be passed to @chanthaboune for a first review and the team would be at Meta’s disposal in case we can help more in this project.

Weekly meeting schedule (DST update)

As seasons change, the warmer locations in the world experience longer day-time and the comparatively cooler locations experience longer nights, which brings the popular concept of DST (daylight saving time) into the conversation for the Hosting Team. Typically countries move their clocks forward one hour during summer and spring, and countries in autumn or winter seasons turn their clocks back one hour to save as much daylight as possible.

The hosting team currently has two weekly meetings, one at 09:00 UTC and another at 18:00 UTC to provide a wider coverage for contributors from all over the world. The first meeting time is more convenient for folks in regions such as APAC (Asia / Pacific) + EMEA (Europe / Middle-East) and the second meeting time is more convenient for folks in regions such as EMEA + AMER (America).

Dates of interest:

  • March 14, 2021 – US/CA starts DST
  • March 29, 2021 – UK/EU starts DST
  • April 4, 2021 – AU ends DST

As in previous occasions, the new times, starting from the March 31, 2021 meeting, will be:

  • 08:00 UTC (changed) 09:00 UTC *
  • 18:00 UTC (unchanged)

* NOTE 2021-03-31: The team has decided, following other teams such as Core, not to change the times according to DST changes, so the times will be fixed in UTC.

If you have any suggestions, please leave them in the comments for discussion at upcoming team meetings.
