We covered nearly 50 kilometers on our rental e-bikes in Overijssel today; a distance unfathomable (for us non-athletes) on a traditional bike. These machines have incredible potential to replace car trips on a mass scale; but only if we create safe spaces on which to ride them.

With Melissa’s parents visiting from across the Atlantic, today we made a 170km. (train/e-bike) pilgrimage to the Canadian War Cemetery in Holten. It is the final resting place of her Great-Grand Uncle Kenneth Gardener, who died while liberating the Netherlands at the age of 22.

The original Mom-assist™️. The “controller” is calibrated to kick in when it detects tired little legs and/or it’s time to head back. “Powered” by cities with 30km/hr roads and paths wide enough for people to ride side by side having a conversation.

Dutch engineers consider the existence of a stop sign a design failure. With the right traffic calming measures such as raised intersections, textured paving and lane narrowing; moving on local streets increases vigilance and awareness, making a complete stop entirely redundant.

Slower speeds are achieved not by posting a sign, but by engineering means that force drivers to slow down and pay attention. Dutch police do very little traffic enforcement; if too many drivers speed on a street, it is deemed a design failure and sent back to the drawing board.

The car-free JFK Promenade is now permanent! This happened today because of all of the advocates in this community who worked nights and weekends this past year and the 40+ years before to get us to this historic victory. To you, and our city leaders, we say: Thank you.
