Recent Review: Loved the team that was sent to look over my sprinkler system. I knew one head needed to be changed, they identified another head and the pressure gauge that needed replacement as well. They also explained a couple of things I was concerned about, reassured me that they weren’t problems. It was a pricey job, but considering I couldn’t find anyone else willing to touch the system I guess that’s what you pay for expertise!

Recent Review: The plumber gave us a call around 10min before the scheduled 7am appointment as not to startle us by just showing up. A cheerful guy at such an obscene hour. After showing him the backflow valve for the fire sprinkler system, he explained the process, and why the new valve was different from the one being replaced. And just before starting the work, he warned of the smoke alarms sounding due to pipe cutting and soldering. Everything went as described and I'm very satisfied (watched him due the work). They did give a $50 discount, which was a pleasant surprise. Somehow they got the plumbing inspector to show an hour or two after the work was completed, so I would not have to take some other day off for the inspection. I only received two quotes for the work, and am assuming its a fair price.

Recent Review: They did a good professional job from start to finish. The communication was good -before, during and after. Mr. McCall was not on site but did have employees do the work and he came by to inspect the work they performed. My only problem was their original recommendation to replace the fire sprinkler backflow (with a new backflow that doesn't need an inspection every year). This was a misguided recommendation because I still need to have my outside lawn sprinkler backflow inspected every year anyway. It doesn't seem like it would cost much more to have the fire backflow inspected at the same time as my lawn backflow so there doesn't seem to be a need to replace the fire backflow.

Recent Review: the technician, jason, was friendly, professional and knowledgeable. he arrived on time. he completed the work and explained what he was doing to me as he went along. he also gave me tips on other components of our water system such as how to turn off the water to the house without turning off the fire sprinklers, and how to turn off/bleed our outdoor spigots in the winter. he completed the repair with as little damage as possible and cleaned up the mess before he left.

Recent Review: Had 2 small leaks in our kitchen ceiling. The leaks were directly under our master bath, and would be halfway between the master bathroom's toilet and shower stall. Also, there is a fire sprinkler about 3-6" inches from the leak. Michael diagnosed part of the cause of the problem, which was a leaky shower valve. He replaced the valve in the shower, and when it was discovered that there was a second unrelated leak that happened to be in the same area, he fixed that and replaced a pipe. Very professional throughout.

Recent Review: I can't say enough good things about my experience with JAV Remodeling: George, Alex and their crew. They were referred to us by a respected architect/consultant who I hired to help me salvage a failed construction project that we started 2 years prior. Unfortunately, our original architect and contractor were unscrupulous, incompetent, and corrupt. After 2 years of watching this project go nowhere, constant fights with contractor (Eric Rodas) and architect, significant financial loss, and of course stress, we fired the contractor (Rodas) and architect and searched for a new team. Once George and Alex took over the job, everything immediately turned around. This was not an easy job, and JAV took a big risk taking it on. This was a very old building, and it was not easy to assess the quality of work done by the original contractor (Rodas). In fact, JAV had to completely demolish and rebuild every system (electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire protection, sprinklers). County and WSSC inspections were meticulous, and had to meet commercial code. Many problems arose, but we worked together closely as a team to solve all of them. Communication was perfect - George answered his phone or returned my calls within 5 minutes 100% of the time. In addition, George would call me every evening to update me on the progress. The project is now finished. The apartments, exterior, and landscaping are beautiful (many detail recommendations were made by JAV), and the new tenants are very happy and enthusiastic to start moving in. I honestly say that I feel a bit sad this project is completed; I look forward to a future opportunity to work with JAV again.

Recent Review: Best choice of contractors We did a lot research to find the best contractor to convert our dark, dank 1000 sq foot basement into a modern living area. Based on the advice of neighbors and online reviews we chose 8 contractors to give us estimates. We were most impressed with Basement Remodeling/ACH Group. Because of their standardized business model we were able to receive an estimate during the initial appointment. It was immediately transparent that this company was extremely well organized. The fact they specialize in basements is like having a heart condition and having a cardiologist rather than a general practitioner. The owner, Pavel, is a unique hands on mastermind of the operation. He possesses an energy and enthusiasm that worked in our favor many, many times. After deciding Basement Remodeling/ACH Group was at the top of our list, we vetted them to ensure they were everything we were looking for. I asked them for references and I received contact information on over a hundred past clients. I randomly selected one from each page and contacted 10 of them by e-mail. I received replies back from 9 of them, all saying how pleased they were with the work. Two invited me to their homes and I went to one. He was an architect who was proud to show me his basement. Several clients told me how skilled Pavel’s subcontractors were. We found this to be true and almost all the subcontractors worked exclusively for the company. One of the contractors told me the reason he liked working for Pavel is that he always got paid on time. That bit of insight told me a lot about why Basement Remodeling is so good at what it does. We were now convinced Basement Remodeling were the best contractors for us. Our home is in DC and that meant lots of permits. Pavel’s point person on permits was excellent in obtaining them and being present for the inspection visits. Our project included digging out 3’ of concrete/dirt, installing a dry basement/sump pump system, new set of stairs, new HVAC, laundry room, bath, den and living area. The final basic cost did not differ from the original estimate. I never felt pressured to spend more than what was originally quoted. In fact it was quite the opposite. There were upgrades (such as increased sound insulation, fire sprinklers) that I insisted on. Pavel provided advice as to whether my ideas were overkill or not. He gave me options and recommendations but the decisions were always mine. Many times Pavel recommended a less costly option to accomplish my desired result. We are very pleased with all the decisions we made in converting our basement to a livable space. The best decision we made was choosing Pavel and Basement Remodeling.

A residential fire sprinkler developed a leak, and I quickly realized that repair/replacement of these is a specialized service with few providers in our area. Another company I called only serviced commercial clients. The job was completed in under an hour. The serviceman was very courteous and explained that sprinkler faults are rare and that it might simply be a case of the sprinkler unit not being tight. Indeed, in removing it he mentioned it did seem a little loose, but he went ahead and replaced it just in case. My home is 13 years old and most likely it wasn't tightened sufficiently at the time of installation. Only negatives were some difficulty with the initial call - I was getting the Service Dept voicemail so kept calling wanting to speak with someone live rather than risk leaving a message. It was 7 hours from the initial call until the service man showed up - a little long, but given the scarcity in providers, I was glad it got done on the same day.

The technician arrived during the scheduled time window. I had arranged ahead of time with the condo building mgr so the technician worked with the building mgr to shut off various alarms, sensors, and pumps. The technician then drained the water from the sprinkler system pipes on the 6th floor where my unit is. The technician was very knowledgeable about what needed to be done and the order in which it needed to be done. It's quite an involved process and the steps have to be performed in the right order to prevent a false alarm to the fire department or a flood in the building. You definitely want someone with plenty of experience doing this. After the preparation, it only took the technician about 5 minutes to replace the faulty sprinkler head. (The old head had been developing rust around the base, indicating a slow leak.) The technician came prepared with everything he needed to remove the head (a special tool is required) and all the replacement parts. He also was careful to protect the kitchen counter and floor below where he was working. Due to the care he had taken to drain the pipes before he removed the head, only a few drips of water came out. He had a bucket ready just in case there had been more but there was hardly any. After the repair, he carefully cleaned up. No drywall repair or painting was required. You'd never know the head had been replaced. Having replaced the head, the technician then refilled the sprinkler system pipes and worked with the building mgr to re-enable all the alarms, sensors, and pumps. Again, everything had to be done is a very specific order so I was glad that the technician was so well versed in the process. To someone who doesn't realize all that's involved with replacing one of these sprinkler heads, the $340 price tag might seem high, but there are very few companies who do this sort of repair for an individual homeowner in the DC area and there's a lot a knowledge required to do the job right in a condo building. It's most definitely not a do-it-yourself kind of task. You want an experienced technician doing this. I should also note, before getting Metropolitan Fire Protection to come out, I tried to get the vendor who has the maintenance contract for the common portions of the fire sprinkler system in our condo buildings to come look at my sprinkler head. They wanted $500 just to come out and take a look. Then, the repair would have been extra. They were clearly not interested in doing repairs for individual condo unit owners. Since the repair, I've had no problems with the sprinkler head. No return of the rust, no dripping, nothing. So, I consider the $340 to be money well spent.
