    Measured perf counters on A12 vs a 9900K. Xcode 10.2.1 vs Clang 10.0.0. Arm64 retired instructions = 109.84% of x86-64. Actual IPC of A12 = 170.14% of Skylake. Branch misprediction rate 25% lower for Apple, in contrast to what some French people say.

    This is also perhaps a deeper reflection of the progress of process technology. TSMC is advertising smaller and smaller performance gains with each node jump. They look more like the half-node optical shrinks in that regard. The main gain is transistor density.

    It wouldn’t be the first time Apple touted efficiency and sustained performance. This was an expressed goal of the A8.

    Nvidia’s acquisition of ARM will likely mean little for Apple in the near and middle term. ARM is a vehicle to increase the leverage Nvidia has for their other products and platforms, including their stated AI goals. I believe their stated intent to honor existing licensing.

    Arm has a few months to announce Armv9 and Apple to actually employ it in the A14's. It would be *super weird* if the first gen Arm Macs need to target v8 NEON things only for to redo things on SVE2 a year later.

    A12Z should be rather weak compared to what a dedicated desktop/laptop chip can achieve in clock speed if nothing else. Many desktop chips see their TDPs rise 3x over mobile variants (thanks to voltage bumps) just to hit desktop CPU speeds.

    Would be fairly significant in a lot of respects. Apple has historically opted for wider and slower designs to maximize efficiency. Favoring clock speed could point to a combination of inability to extra further IPC gains or processor designs that allow high speeds w/ low voltage

    The key here is not a delay related to an Un-anticipated design change, but a lack of ability to do the appropriate compliance testing. A design change wouldn’t be unusual, particularly for a new process where production tolerance may not be well understood.

    iPhone SE 2020 (US variant: FCC ID BCG-E3500A; model A2275) FCC OET lab tested LTE uplink transmit max antenna gain. LAT 1 (i.e. lower antenna) is primary with highest EIRP, regardless of antenna gain. EIRP and conducted power graph(s) to come later.

    If anybody's going to take on Apple CPUs, then it's going to be ex-Apple engineers; Keep an eye on this in the next years. I wonder if their business model will be just silicon or also IP.
