The Open Data Institute works with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem
About us
The ODI is a non-profit company, founded in 2012 by inventor of the web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and AI expert, Sir Nigel Shadbolt, and headquartered in King’s Cross, London, UK. Our mission is to work with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem. We want a world where data works for everyone. To do this, we work with businesses, governments, research organisations, public bodies, civil society, and philanthropic and other grant-giving organisations. THE WORK WE DO The ODI operates as an institute, and we also undertake commercial work that advances our mission. Our operating costs are met through a range of grants and commercial revenue. Our work includes applied research; consultancy services; training; and providing free reports, tools and webinars. We focus our efforts in three broad areas: 1. Improving the data practices of organisations so that they can build and manage adequate data infrastructure and data use 2. Tackling challenges so that the data ecosystem works better 3. Gathering and creating research, evidence and knowledge about data and the benefits of open, trustworthy data access, to inform companies and policymakers as they create data infrastructure, assets, practices and policies. If you’d like to help us advance this work, we'd love to hear from you – please get in touch at [email protected]

Join Emma Thwaites Gavin Freeguard and Matthew Kilcoyne for a post party conference debrief, and a look at the legislative agenda ahead. As Parliament heads into a prolonged period of lawmaking, we know there are Bills incoming on Digital Information and Smart Data, Cybersecurity and Resilience, Planning and Infrastructure, Product Safety and Metrology that will impact the tech sector and civil society – and potentially a draft AI bill in the offing. We’ll be discussing them all and how the drama of Conferences and policy making at them will have impacted their passage through Parliament. We’ll also be going through our updated roadmap of policy ideas and suggestions for the new government, building on the content of our policy manifesto and recent DCAI whitepaper. The event will include an opportunity for you to feed in your views, raise issues and suggest ideas about how public and private actors can build public trust, ensure ethical and responsible use of data, and ensure new legislation delivers citizen-centred opportunities from technological innovations underway. #data #AI #policy https://lnkd.in/ep9jYrmg

Much attention has been paid to the existential risks of AI, many of which relate to so-called artificial general intelligence technologies, which are yet to be developed. Existing and imminent generative AI systems and large language models present immediate opportunities and challenges. They require a sound AI infrastructure. Our research shows flaws that could cause model and business collapse, due to lack of data transparency and poor data-sharing practices threatening rights and livelihoods. If the UK is to benefit from the extraordinary opportunities presented by innovations in this field, it must look beyond the hype cycle and return to the data fundamentals that are so essential for building a robust data and AI ecosystem, and a strong, equitable market that benefits everyone, and minimises harm. #AI #data #DataGovernance https://hubs.li/Q02NXP9C0

INSIGHT has launched a Secure Research Environment (SRE) to make eye data from the world's largest #Ophthalmology bioresource more accessible to healthcare researchers. Since it was founded in 2019 as one of seven Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) hubs, INSIGHT has grown to become a valuable data resource for scientific discovery, with more than 35 million eye images and linked clinical data from over 2 million NHS patients attending routine appointments. An NHS initiative, INSIGHT is led by Moorfields Eye Hospital, London in partnership with University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. Researchers from academia, the NHS, industry, tech, charities, and policy groups have applied to use data through INSIGHT for projects that will benefit patients and the wider NHS. Our SRE now makes the data more accessible by offering a dedicated cloud environment for remote data access. #datasavessight ⬇️ Find out more below https://wix.to/qGt8hXE

In recent years, Large Language Models (LLMs) and related technologies have significantly enhanced computers' ability to process natural language. While they are frequently viewed as tools for answering questions, maintaining factual accuracy has proven challenging. Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have emerged as a key component for many organisations, enhancing their ability to integrate data and provide answers. However, KGs often face limitations in expressiveness and tend to have rigid schemas. Join us on 8 October from 16:00 to 17:00 BST as Denny Vrandecic and Elena Simperl explore these technologies and discuss how the advanced capabilities of large language models can enhance the expressiveness of knowledge graphs, effectively combining the strengths of both. #AI #data https://lnkd.in/eMjVXB6e

There is very little transparency about the data used in AI systems - a fact that is causing growing concern as these systems are increasingly deployed with real-world consequences. Key transparency information about data sources, copyright, and inclusion of personal information and more is rarely included by systems flagged within the Partnership for AI’s AI Incidents Database. While transparency cannot be considered a ‘silver bullet’ for addressing the ethical challenges associated with AI systems, or building trust, it is a prerequisite for informed decision-making and other forms of intervention like regulation. Today at Conservative Party Conference I'm speaking for the Open Data Institute on the Centre for Policy Studies panel at 11.10am in Hall 4. Together with Andrew Griffith MP, Matthew Sinclair, Matthew Feeney, and Camilla de Coverly Veale, I'll be talking about the importance of getting data, antitrust, and trade policy right if we're to have the best place to build future tech businesses in Europe right here in Britain. With so much incoming legislation and new emergent technologies, significant challenges present to policymakers — but we can get right in a way that fosters growth, enables ethical and responsible use of data (including in AI), and builds public trust in tech. Join us today! https://lnkd.in/eaJkBEiF

Society faces an urgent and complex AI data scraping challenge. Left unsolved, it could threaten responsible AI innovation. In our recent webinar, Lee Tiedrich and Elena Simperl discuss the current data scraping legal and policy landscape, including the mounting disputes. They also discussed potential approaches for encouraging responsible and legally compliant behaviours, including codes of conduct, technical tools, model contract terms, and education.
