Migrate WordPress and Run WordPress Backups

Duplicator creates a package that bundles all the site’s plugins, themes, content, database and WordPress files into a simple zip file called a package. This package can then be used to easily migrate a WordPress site to any location you wish. Move on the same server, across servers and pretty much any location a WordPress site can be hosted. WordPress is not required for installation since the package contains all site files.

Installation Instructions

  1. Upload duplicator folder to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory
  2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  3. Click on the Duplicator link from the main menu
  4. Check out the help by clicking the help icon and create your first package.

The Duplicator requires php 5.3 or higher.

Is this plugin compatible with WordPress multisite (MU)?

Duplicator isn’t, however Duplicator Pro supports full multisite network migrations/backups and also can install a multisite subsite as a standalone site.

A while ago I changed my hosting provider to a different one that also offers integrated backup and security services. Some time later a security patch broke my site and literally none of the provider backups worked, maybe because of the prior database migration, I don’t really know. However, I was lucky, since I never deinstalled Duplicator, which still made backups in the background and so I just lost the work of a few days. Lesson learned: 1) Never rely on a service you actually don’t know, until you can prove it reliable. 2) Make daily backups instead of weekly. My thanks go to the Dup developers. You saved more you can imagine.

I had to backup and restore a mission-critical site from one web host to another.
