In this episode we tag along with engineers from the Philadelphia Los Angeles districts as they inspect a high-span bridge in Maryland. The Savannah District discovered some revolutionary war era artifacts in the Savannah River, they show us how they are preserving these relics. The Engineering Research and Development Center is working on simulation programs to assist our combat fighters in how they navigate for Amphibious landings, and the ERDC team is researching different materials and their strengths for applications in combat environments. The Philadelphia District is a USACE Center of Expertise for Bridge Inspection and Evaluation. They recently completed an inspection of the District's Chesapeake City Bridge, where they also trained an engineer from the Los Angeles District on proper inspection techniques.

In this month’s episode of Corps Connection, St. Paul District recently performed modifications to its Pool 2 wing dam in Hastings Minnesota. The Jacksonville District takes us to Puerto Rico where they are working on several projects in the U.S. territory, and our Engineering Research and Development Center’s Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory is looking into advanced manufacturing technology to develop new material systems for use in both civil and military applications.

In this episode, we sit down with MAJ Jared Demello, Frank Cook and Matthew Karlinchak to talk about the Arlington National Cemetery Expansion Project which is a project under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Interagency and International Services Program. The Corps is one of many partners who work with the Arlington National Cemetery. The main role is to provide construction support for larger construction projects, like the cemetery expansion project. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has established a goal to advance the practice of beneficial use of dredged material to 70% by the year 2030. Dredged material is a valued resource that is not to be wasted, but instead used for benefits to the ecosystem, economy, and to deliver the USACE mission more effectively and efficiently across the Navigation, Flood Risk Management and Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration projects. In this month's edition of Corps Connection we travel to Europe with the Chief of Engineers as he checks in with Soldiers who participated in Exercise SABER-GUARDIAN. We also take you to the Pacific Ocean where USACE Employees are assisting citizens in Guam recover from the impacts of Typhoon Mawar. The Galveston District is keeping local citizens and stakeholders in the loop as they hold a public meeting concerning an environmental impact statement for the Matagorda Ship Channel. Lastly, Philadelphia District worked to reduce the risk of coastal storm damage to five Delaware communities.

On June 22, Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, 55th Chief of Engineers, signed a Chief’s Report recommending the Baltimore Harbor Seagirt Loop Channel Improvement project to Congress. The recommended plan looks to deepen the the channel to 50 feet making Baltimore Harbor more efficient in handling the larger Post-Panamax container ships that are now making port calls there.

In this episode we talk with Aaron Snyder and Kevin McDonald about the Corps Water Infrastructure Financing Program (CWIFP). CWIFP is a newly launched loan program that will provide low cost, long-term loans with flexible repayment options to creditworthy borrowers. The verdict – the way the nation operates its dams across three federal agencies is appropriate and sound but can benefit from some areas of improvement.

(May 18, 2023) –The Institute for Water Resources’(IWR) Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC), located in Davis, CA, takes home the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Innovation of the Year Award for adding Post-Wildfire Modeling capabilities to its software. These software capabilities provide prediction tools that engineers can use to anticipate a unique type of flooding that can follow a combination of fire and floods.

Hilo, HI (May 3, 2023) - In the past, when someone at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) mentioned clouds, they most often were referring to the weather. However, in today’s modern context, “the cloud” can mean many things. At USACE’s Institute for Water Resources (IWR), it most often describes the Civil Works Business Intelligence (CWBI) program. CWBI has been a USACE leader in cloud implementation over the past 10 years and continues to refactor Civil Works data and system assets to gain efficiencies, integrate resources, and reduce Information Technology (IT) maintenance and cost.

Alexandria, VA (May 10, 2023) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Institute for Water Resources (IWR) participated in the kick-off of the project MANABAS COAST (MAinstreaming NAture BAsed Solutions through COASTal systems). The meeting took place March 11-17 in Hague, Netherlands. USACE is an official observer of MANABAS, which is a European Union project aimed at mainstreaming nature-based engineering solutions in the North Sea Region.

It’s an issue that country leaders and international partners have been seeking to address for decades, but without significant and consistent global intervention, the nation’s agriculture, economic development, and national security will remain at risk.
