Did you know that for a baby under 6 months, drinking water can actually be fatal!!

I know what you’re thinking, there’s no way…

But baby’s kidneys are small and underdeveloped when compared to adult kidneys, this means that they are unable to hold as much water as adults. When the baby drinks the water and the kidneys are unable to filter this water properly then the water will go into the blood stream. Excess water in the blood stream can dilute the blood and in fact dilute the sodium and electrolytes in the blood – which can be fatal to a baby.

This can not only happen when a baby is given a glass of water, but it can also occur if you dilute formula with too much water (meaning it is essential to follow the tin of formula exactly).

✨ For babies under 6 months - Breastmilk and infant formula provides all of the fluid that your baby needs without diluting any of the electrolytes or sodium. So, on a hot day this may mean that your baby may want to feed more frequently to help them stay hydrated. It is important that you let your baby breastfeed on demand and do not give any water under 6 months.
✨ After 6 months – Babies may have a maximum of 4-8 oz of cooled boiled water A DAY to avoid water intoxication.

Signs of water intoxication to look out for include becoming drowsy, inattentive, twitching, poor coordination and confused. If you notice any of these symptoms it’s important to take your baby to a hospital immediately.
