People seem to be redefining Web 2.0 as Facebook, etc, that own data, but Web 2.0 at the time was platforms like WordPress, Odeo, Six Apart, Flickr, Technorati, and del.icio.us that had open data and interoperated. flickr.com/photos/ross/49

3. I agree there is an overall move toward using platforms. But there is a big difference between using a platform that also owns all the data also (web2) and a platform that is merely a proxy to decentralized data (web3).
I am very grateful that folks at Apple re-reviewed and have let us know we do not need to implement in-app purchases to be able to continue to update the app. Bad news travels faster than good, usually, so please consider sharing that they reversed course.
Twitter does some things so darn well, like how their embeds work, the web app, the related tweets, how the app works when you don't have a good connection... if you're an engineer that worked on that stuff and want to do it again, HMU

Heads up on why updates have been absent... we were locked by App Store. To be able to ship updates and bug fixes again we had to commit to support in-app purchases for .com plans. I know why this is problematic, open to suggestions. Allow others IAP? New name?

1. I think Twitter is great and want to see it succeed. I learn a ton on here.
2. I want to see subscription models work for social networks, we're also attempting this on .
Sometimes I really wonder if companies are having a remote / distributed work problem, or a too-many-meetings problem.

iMessage on MacOS is the worst software Apple currently ships. Better search in iMessage would have a really positive impact on my life. Sometimes I still resort to SQLite queries on chat.db.

Can we all agree that giant per-post image headers look terrible on most blogs? It’s been a curse of default WP themes past few years, too. We need it to be easier to have posts without image headers and even without titles.

As WP continues through the decades, we have to deal with all parts of life, including death. As a community, we now have a memorial place we can remember and honor those who contributed to but are no longer part of this world.
The world lost a special person today. His impact on WordPress, Automattic, and the many friends he had through both will be remembered.

I don't disagree with anything else in 's thread, it's just a trend that retcons web2 to be regressive when the same goals (interoperability, openness, decentralization) were there. To be fair, Web2 probably did the same thing to Web1 in 2005.
I am so thankful for those fighting for freedom in software and making the web more open source, especially those in the community. This work will echo for generations.

Anyway the most interesting conversation to me is how to make all the new stuff as user-friendly as possible without recreating the same centralized bottlenecks and gatekeepers.

New name: The app has always done a ton of work to support WordPresses hosted anywhere, using the XML-RPC API included in core WP since WP 2.6 was released in 2008. That's why we called it "WordPress" and not "WordPress.com" or "Jetpack."
I want to thank $WORK / and and for the support they've given the community over the years. It sounds quaint, but upgrading IRC to Slack in 2014 has allowed our community to build the open web faster and better together. 29k people on it now!

Hopefully someday I’ll be serious! But seriously, I do recommend periodic meetups and that was part of Automattic’s culture since 2005. 3–4 weeks a year seems to get you much of the benefits of full time collocation.

I did not expect the previous tweet to get attention outside the WP community. My understanding was the previous decision was final, and we had already made many of the arguments people suggested privately over the several weeks the app was locked.

I am a big believer in the sanctity of licenses. (Open source relies on licenses and copyright.) We agreed to this license when we signed up for (and stayed in) the app store, so going to follow and abide by the rules. Not looking to skirt it, hence doing what they asked us to.
