Columbia River Treaty

The Columbia River Treaty is an agreement between the U.S. and Canada for the cooperative development and operation of the water resources of the Columbia River Basin to provide for flood control and power.

Energy imbalance market

BPA is taking steps toward joining the Western Energy Imbalance Market, with a potential implementation date of May 2022. BPA must complete certain projects before it can start EIM operations.

Grid modernization

BPA's grid modernization portfolio includes 35 projects designed to bring new automation, accuracy or visibility into the agency's operations.

Montana renewables

The Montana Renewable Development Action Plan focuses on improving regional understanding of the opportunities for and barriers to developing renewable resources in Montana, in addition to developing solutions for delivering that power to Northwest markets. 

Non-treaty storage

The Non-Treaty Storage Agreement is a series of long- and short-term agreements between BC Hydro and BPA that negotiates the access and control of additional water storage not included in the Columbia River Treaty.

Resource Adequacy 

On Sept. 29, 2021, BPA committed to participating in the non-binding forward showing phase of the Western Resource Adequacy Program.



Southeast Idaho Load Service

BPA has been evaluating alternative ways to meet its power supply and transmission service obligations to its preference customers located in southeast Idaho.

Transmission line reintegration

The Transmission Line Reintegration project requires regular vegetation management work spread out over four phases.

Transmission tower software

BPA uses the Advanced Tower Analysis and Design System to provide structural engineers with a set of tools for analysis and design of lattice transmission structures.

Wind integration

BPA has connected almost 5,100 megawatts of wind energy to our transmission system and expects to connect another 3,000 to 4,000 megawatts of wind energy by 2025.

Energy Imbalance Market Settlements Meeting

BPA is holding bi-weekly EIM Settlements meetings as a platform to discuss common EIM Settlement issues, present questions to the EIM Settlements team and address them in a collaborative manner.

Resource Program Public Workshop

BPA will outline critical inputs to the Resource Program, including future needs for power and reserves identified in its Needs Assessment through FY 2034, as well as its forecasts of the wholesale power market dynamics during that same time horizon.
