Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is visiting the United States this week, meeting with American lawmakers and urging them to continue supporting his country in its fight against Russia.
Zelensky told senators Thursday that if US money for the war dries up, it would have a cascading effect and eventually lead European countries to do the same. He warned Russia would win if the United States walked away.
"You give money, we give lives," he said, according to attendees.
Republican leaders in Congress are considering cutting Ukraine assistance from their long-term spending bill in order to win over hardline holdouts and unlock gridlock on the House floor, two sources told CNN.
Earlier this week, Zelensky delivered a dramatic speech during the UN General Assembly, his first in-person address to the global body since Russia's invasion last year.
"The goal of the present war against Ukraine is to turn our lands, our people, our resources into a weapon against you, against the international rules based order," he said. "Many seats in the General Assembly hall may become empty if Russia succeeds with its treachery and aggression."
