JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON -- JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District is closing the Moose Creek Landing recreational parking lot and boat ramp beginning June 15 while construction is underway to improve public access at the site. The project is expected to be completed by late August.
Located on the Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project near North Pole, Moose Creek Landing Road and the associated day use area will be paved. Once completed, the new day use area will have 14 boat trailer parking spots, 67 parking spaces, and 6 picnic areas with a paved access trail. This is in addition to the existing boat ramp and public restrooms. Also, landscaped islands are being added to manage runoff and control dust. Currently, the site is gravel.
“The public’s safety is our first priority while construction is underway,” said Julie Anderson, chief of the Operations and Maintenance Branch. “This project will improve boaters’ safety while launching their vessels and provide day use areas for the public.”
Moose Creek Landing Road will remain open to the public for the duration of construction providing access to Piledriver Slough and the Tanana River. Please do not go around barricades or “do not enter” signage. These areas are closed for public safety during construction.
There are three alternative boat ramps that access the Tanana River, too. The Tanana Lakes Recreation Area is the closest to the Chena project. The second ramp is at the Chena Pump Road Wayside, which is near the confluence of the Chena and Tanana Rivers. To the east of the Chena project is the Salcha River Boat Ramp as well.
