"After researching and meeting several companies, we retained 360 Painting DC late summer 2022. From the beginning, Lorna Kerr showed up prepared, knowledgeable, and confident her team could handle the job. She was responsive, engaging and made us feel like our project was priority. And, she had excellent recommendations when we were grappling with our final colors. 360 transformed our home into a beautiful, calm, oasis â inside and out. Neighbors often tell us we have the best looking house on the block. And, we still drive up and feel happy when we see the difference. We hired 360 to paint the external of our house including the deck. There was much to do â wood to remove, materials to replace, random nails, etc. yet Lornaâ s team never complained and always had solutions. We were so impressed with the work in progress that we asked Lorna if we could extend our contract and have her 360 team manage our interior paint projects. Again, Lornaâ s counsel on our color indecisions was brilliant and helpful. We had several rooms painted, a large mirror removed from a wall, and a tough baseboard project to tackle along the way. Our interior spaces were completely transformed. We are loving it. We highly recommend 360 Painting DC. The team is lovely â hard working, professional and engaging. We miss them! Lorna is exceptional in her leadership and client management."

We were in the process of moving and desperately needed help fixing our home to get it ready to go on the market. They are good at many different services besides painting, so in addition to painting all of the walls and trim in our townhome (a huge job in itself!), they also repaired our fence, replaced some concrete in our sidewalk that had cracked, re-stained our back deck, and re-painted our outdoor railing. "This is a fabulous company. I feel I got a great price, top of the line quality workmanship, and white glove customer service. I couldnâ t be happier with my experience. I used them for interior residential painting. I price shopped initially and they were the bestâ ¦. So that concerned me. You often get what you pay for! In this case I lucked out! Their timeliness, attention to detail and workmanship was outstanding, and on top of that, the customer service was just amazing. I know Iâ m using lots of superlatives here so let me explain whyâ ¦ they moved my furniture, helped me install new smoke detectors, raised my curtain rods, brought me additional samples because I was indecisive, AND worked around my 17 year old sleeping cat! Oh! And they were on time, communicative and just nice to work with. I donâ t often pick wiselyâ ¦. But I did with this outfit. I highly recommend!"

"We had our roof for our DC rowhouse replaced in 2013 by a different company, but within seven years a number of the shingles had fallen off and we had leaks near our skylight and water pouring down our front porch. I called the original roofer and they wanted to charge me $3600 for the repairs, which I felt that I shouldn't have had to pay given that the roof was seven years old. I then called August Roofing and they charged me $2500 to replace the missing shingles, seal and paint the vents, tighten the flashings, and clean and tighten the gutters. They came quickly and did the work fast and were responsive to my texts and questions. I waited to write this review to see if I had any issues in heavy rain, but now three months later, everything still looks great!"

What Are Typical Services a Painting Company Provides?

Not all residential painters perform the same types of residential painting, so it’s important to understand what jobs are provided and who you may turn to for those services. Some home painters might only paint the outdoors of houses, while others might specialize in interior painting. Some might specialize in creative projects, such as adding murals or decorative accent walls to spaces.

A lot of residential painting companies do interior wall painting. At its most basic, these services consist of priming and painting walls, incorporating edgework, to guarantee a professional-looking finish. Some contractors might also paint baseboards, molding, and ceilings, molding, ceilings, and baseboards, but it’s important to ask and not just assume.

Companies that provide exterior home painting services paint the exterior of houses, including siding, brick, and other surfaces. Check with a business to guarantee it will paint specialty surfaces if your residence has them.

When you’re searching for a tiny bit more creativity, you might want a business that does stenciling or other decorative painting. This specialty service might reduce how many companies you can work with and drive up the price. It’s especially vital that you review a painter’s portfolio to comprehend if they can do creative work you’ll be satisfied with.

When speaking to possible house painting businesses in Washington, explain what kind of painting you’re looking for. The company can let you know whether or not they offer those jobs.

Tips for Employing a Painting Contractor for Your House Painting Job

While there may be lots of painting contractors in Washington, they won’t all meet your house painting needs. Take steps when vetting painting companies to ensure that the potential contractors on your short list meet your needs.

It also makes sense to ask about insurance. Your selected painter must have liability insurance that covers any employees, equipment, and property that might be subject to damage or injury. This protects both the painting professional and you.

Frequently asked questions

Painters usually price a job by the square feet of the project. Sometimes they’ll include flat fees for fixed expenses, like overhead and permits.

We make finding a painter easy. Simple use our directory to find a painter. Here you can browse local pros, check their reviews and do your first screening without ever having to call. We’ve also prescreened all the pros for you, to give you peace of mind.

Interior painting makes for a doable DIY project. You can save some money and get a real sense of accomplishment by doing this yourself. And, with the right prep work – covering, taping and scraping – it’s fairly forgiving. But it takes a lot of time to move furniture, tape trim, prep the surface and cover your floor, let alone apply the actual paint. Instead, save yourself the time and hassle and find a local interior painter.

Leave exterior painting to the pros. Not only do you need to worry about the type and quality of the paint, you’ll also likely need a ladder and considerably more prep work. You’ll likely need additional equipment like ladders, scaffolding and possibly a paint sprayer. It’s almost cheaper to just hire a pro. Talk to a local exterior house painter about your project.

  1. Do your research. Understand what to expect and what to look for in a pro. Look at paint types, prices and costs.
    1. Interior home painting costs $1,000-$2,800
    2. Exterior painting costs $1,700-$4,100
    3. Painting a ceiling costs $150-$350
    4. Painting cabinets costs $350-$1,200
    5. Trim painting costs $500-$1,500
    6. Calculate paint coverage
  2. Call pros for site inspections and estimates. Always get three to five estimates.
  3. Check references, compare quotes, look at past work. After you have estimates in hand, do one final pass to compare the contractors.
  4. Sign a contract with the pro of your choice. You might need to make a down payment, usually 25% to 50% of the total project cost to cover material costs, but not all pros require this. Don’t pay for the entire project upfront.

  • A complete inspection. Each pro takes a walk around your home to evaluate the condition of your current paint, the size of the job and any obstacles for accessing the site. They do this to see how much prep work they’ll need and estimate how long the job will take. The more thorough the inspection, the more accurate the quote.
  • Color consultation. Expect each contractor to have varying color options and suggestions. However, you have the final say.
  • Listen to the pro – they’re experts after all – but don’t get pushed into a color combination or finish type that you don’t want. Understand the different exterior paints or interior paint choices before your pro arrives.
  • A rough estimate or complete quote. Finishing contractors vary here. Usually, they can quote straightforward projects on the spot. But some may need to take it back to their shop to run numbers and give you a detailed estimate with costs broken out. Neither method is better than the other, but just make sure to get multiple quotes.

  1. How long have you been in business? A long business history helps you avoid shoddy companies. It’s hard for a service business to stay in business if they don’t do good work.
  2. Are you licensed and insured? Not all states require a license for painting homes, but many do. Always use one that’s insured.
  3. Do you belong to any professional organizations? You’ll find many online, like the Painting Contractors Association or the Finishing Contractors Association?
  4. Do you have other work I can look at? Always check a portfolio or, in the case of painters, it’s better to look at work they did a few years ago to see how well it’s held up.
  5. How long will the job take? Get a rough estimate but get it in writing.
  6. How many people are in your crew? This is especially important if you work remotely. More people generally means more noise, but they’ll be done faster.
  7. Will I be in the way if I’m home during the painting? You usually won’t be in the way, but this question helps you understand what to expect while they’re working. They’ll need to lay down coverings and do a lot of prep work.
  8. Do you guarantee your work? Never hire a painter who doesn’t guarantee their work. This often means they’ll rush the prep work, since peeling never happens right away.
  9. What type of paint do you use, and how long is it rated to last? Different rooms need different paint and the exterior needs exterior paint. It comes in different grades with different guaranteed lifetimes.
  10. Can you supply a written estimate and contract? Never use a painter who isn’t willing to put his work in writing.

Comment: I'm moving out of my condo and putting it on the market. Something that I took off the wall took off about a square foot of paint. Since I need someone to come and fix that anyways, I may as well use some mistint paint to put a fresh coat on the walls. There are some settling cracks between the ceiling and trim in the living room that I would like filled in as well. It's a 756 square foot condo. everything but the bathroom will be painted. I am planning on removing all furniture before the paint job.
