This morning, we began the process to take full control of releases at Isabella Dam ahead of increased temperatures and reservoir inflows due to snowmelt runoff. After briefly stopping releases, we expect to return to normal operation tonight. More info:
There are several low-head dams or drop structures in the Long Tom River. These structures help with flooding and irrigation but can trap unsuspecting boaters at higher flows with recirculating currents. See the whole video here: dvidshub.net/video/881206/l

The kayaking community calls low head dams “drowning machines” because water falling over them creates circulating currents that trap people and objects underwater against the dam. These forces are nearly inescapable for even the strongest swimmers.

Last week, 7 turbidity sensors were deployed in Lake Erie near Fairport Harbor, Ohio, that will monitor turbidity, or clarity of the water based on suspended sediment, to help improve opportunities for aquatic beneficial use of dredge material throughout the Great Lakes. 1/2

#ICYMI Sunday, April 23, marked the 125th birthday of GEN Lucius Clay, the architect of the Berlin Airlift, military governor of post-World War II Germany, ambassador to Germany, and Army engineer. He is also the namesake to Clay Kaserne. He passed away at 80 in 1978. #USACE

Regular inspections are important because they provide an opportunity to detect early signs of potential distresses. This allows us to implement early maintenance measures to ensure the dam is operating as designed. 2/2
