Our Mission

Women Veterans Health Care seeks to provide high quality, gender-specific health care in a safe and sensitive environment at VA health facilities nationwide. We also strive to be a national leader in women's health care, raising the standard of care for all women.

In 2000, women comprised only 4% of the Veteran population. By 2040, women will be 18% of the Veteran population. Women are also the fastest growing group of Veterans using VA services. The number of women Veterans using VHA services has tripled since 2001, growing from 159,810 to over 550,000 today. In fact, women make up 30% of all new Veterans Health Administration (VHA) patients.

Women Veterans adapt well to changes and can overcome challenges. However, they are at-risk for some types of illness due to their military service, such as musculoskeletal issues, chronic pain, PTSD, and the experience of military sexual trauma. To address these needs, in 1988 VA created Women's Health to focus on gender-specific care offered in a safe environment. Today the Office of Women's Health oversees policy and operations for women Veteran's health care nationally and focuses on all aspects of Women's health care, including comprehensive health, reproductive health, and education.
