surveying readers and contributors to Wikipedia[edit]

Central Notice Settings

What is the campaign duration?
  • → 2 to 3 weeks for each language
  • → all the languages do not need to be targetted in the same weeks
  • → starting languages may be French and English, ~ 2nd half of April, if possible
  • → other languages may follow according to the availability of the translated questionnaire and of a banner slot
  • → it would be optimum if all the languages could have been addressed before summer (June, 21)
Which projects will you be targeting?
  • Wikipedia
What languages will you be targeting?
  • English, French, Turkish, Italian, German, Ukrainian, Polish, Ukrainian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Arabic (and other languages the community would interested by providing that the translating resource is available).
Do you wish to show banners to Logged In users, Anonymous Users or Both? Do you want to target users with a specific number of edits or average monthly?
  • Any user (both logged in and anonymous)

What countries will your campaign target?

Banner/Campaign Diet:

  • To be determined by Central Notice admin

What is the purpose of the campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign?[edit]

Description -

The campaign aims at surveying the Wikipedia users on how they consider, use the information provided by Wikipedia, according to the context (professional, personal, etc.) It will also ask the contributors specific questions about their participation and their involvement.

It is managed by a group or researchers from several public research institutions, mainly French, coordinated by the research network Marsouin with, we hope, collaboration with the different language communities.

More precisely, the survey aims at addressing the following questions (open list):

  • for the contributors, what does that mean to be a contributor, how it is perceived by their relative, how this impacts their practice, their vision of Wikipedia and of its governance (see the WMF's taxonomy of "gaps", p. 16)
  • for the readers, how they use Wikipedia, but also what does acceptability as a source of information means, according to the context - school, university, information, etc.), for them and for their "audience" (see WMF's taxonomy of "gaps", p. 10)
  • this questionnaire will rely on and expand the one done in 2019 by the WMF (would be happy to have feedback from Isaac_(WMF) or Jmorgan_(WMF)

Again, we would like to have inputs from the community of what questions we could address together!

The list of the languages contacted, and the people volunteering to translate is maintained in the project's Research page

The survey is inspired by the survey to the French users made by the same team in 2015 and in 2011.
See the results of the former surveys (in French: 2011, 2015), and by the survey made by the WMF in 2019.

Metrics - We are expecting to reach ~16.000 answers in two weeks in each language addressed, as in 2015.

IRB approval - The research has been evaluated and approved by IMT Atlantique's IRB.

What banner(s) will you use? What will be your landing page?[edit]

Banners - The Banners will have the same text, translated in the language of the wikipedia surveyed

'Please help us better understand what you do on Wikipedia!' By answering to [https:// this questionnaire] created by an international group of university researchers and members of the Wikipedia community.
[https:// Answer to the questionnaire]

--- in French:
'Aidez-nous à mieux comprendre ce que vous faites sur Wikipedia!' en répondant à ce questionnaire créé par un groupe international de chercheurs universitaires et de membres de la communauté Wikipédia.
Répondre au questionnaire

Landing Page - The landing page will be different for each language targeted. But as in 2015, each landing page will be hosted in the project pages of the concerned language. This page explains the goal of the survey, before sending to a LimeSurvey instance hosted by Marsouin, on France located servers

Discussion[edit]

Hi Jullienn, I have a quick question around this campaign. When are the exact dates you are running it? We (the WMF) has fundraising banner campaigns in both Italy and the Czech Republic scheduled for the dates I see you mention in the CN calendar. Do you think you will run the survey in either of these countries? The fundraising banners are only shown to logged out users. Thanks, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 07:00, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi JBrungs (WMF). Thank you very much for your question, it'll help me precise our needs.
  • we do not have precise dates in mind, so we can be flexible. It is not a problem either if in some languages the banner appears a bit later than in other
  • this said, for the time being we are able to do the questionnaire in French, Turkish, and in English (maybe arabic). Probably in Italian as well (I am currently in Italy) but we would very much like having the support/interaction with the communities to do so
  • other languages and timing are pending the possibility to exchange with the community on their needs and on the translation
Jullienn (talk) 12:06, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you @Jullienn for getting back to me.
Generally, you can find what fundraising campaigns are happening for non-logged in users in the CN calendar.
In case your campaign runs at the same time as one of the fundraising campaigns, readers will still see your banner after they saw 10 fundraising banners. So the overlap would not mean that your banners do not show at all.
I will keep an eye on this page and see how your plans develop and if you need any further help or information, just ping me.
Best, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 12:10, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
hum, do I understand you well, @JBrungs (WMF) if I say that it means that a person would have to open 10 pages before seeing out banner? If yes, that would not do, as there would be a huge bias toward the big Wikipedia users in our dataset.
That obliges us to schedule our banners out of the period of fundraising. It is a constraint but as you say we have the date and we can adapt (and it is us to be adaptable anyhow).
Best, Jullienn (talk) 14:21, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Jullienn,
Yes, that is correct. A reader will see fundraising banners for the first 10x they visit a wiki page and after that your banner would display. Please note, that for the time you are running the survey this is only applicable to non-logged in readers in Italy (please note that we might not run banners in Italy during this time, this is still to be determined) and the Czech Republic. Logged in users will see your banner straight away as we do not display fundraising banners to them.
I always make sure that I add our fundraising campaigns to the Central Notice calendar as soon as I can, so you can always check there when and where we are having fundraising banners up.
Best, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 07:42, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, well, providing that our demand is accepted, I think the best would be to adjust "our" banner's time slot to the final fundraising calendar; we don't mind a delay, but better to have the same protocol for all the languages targetted. Jullienn (talk) 08:26, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ukrainian WikiGap 2023 will be a great opportunity to draw attention to insufficient representation of women in Wikipedia content and among Wikipedia contributors. The campaign will run from March 6th until March 26th, but we are requesting a banner for a smaller portion of this time (exact days can be shifted based on the CN calendar if needed, as long as it's a week-long campaign).

Hi DerHexer, please let us know if anything is missing. If you'd be able to create the simple banner, I'll immediately get it translated. Thank you for all your help and apologies about the rushed nature of this request. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 12:38, 9 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@DerHexer, thank you for the quick action. A tweak: can we break the text into two lines and make it bigger? We'll remove the discussion, panel, workshop part. So, something like:
Be part of the Wikimania 2023 program, virtually or in-person.
    Welcoming submissions until March 28.
If breaking it up into two lines doesn't work, let's go with this shorter text all in one line, and if possible with a bigger font size.

@DerHexer, it's beautiful!!!! A very FINAL tweak, I was just told by a grammar purist that it should be "in person" not "in-person," because it's not an adjective :) So, without the dash and it's great to do. Thank you very much, as always. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 19:10, 9 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Natalia Szelachowska (WMCZ): I've created campaign and banner for you. Please check that and the preview. As soon as you approve, I will enable the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:45, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello, thank you for the meassage and for preparing a campaign for us! If it's ok, we'd rather keep our banner we uploaded as a part of the request as we had it discussed with our PR specialist. What would be great is to add there a grey background and frame (sorry for my basic editing skills), would it be possible @DerHexer? Best, Natalia Szelachowska (WMCZ) (talk) 19:25, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Natalia Szelachowska (WMCZ): Unfortunately, we cannot process a banner design created in Wikimarkup. CentralNotice banners are created in pure HTML and CSS (and JavaScript). Therefore, I had to recreate it, using our standard banner which allows a responsive display also on mobile pages and small displays. Your design wouldn't work on mobile (see screenshot). Without mobile display, you'd lose more than 50 % of traffic which I cannot recommend. So either please provide a responsive banner design in HTML/CSS or lets proceed with my banner creation (certainly, some adjustments could be made). Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 23:44, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I understand however, I'm positive that the banners, which was created by us earlier, were accepted. In that case, can I ask you to adjust the banner you've created by using violet and bold letters? Thank you for your support! Natalia Szelachowska (WMCZ) (talk) 19:31, 23 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DerHexer I'm writing because I haven't heard back from you and our campaign should start tomorrow. Can we proceed with the procedure? I'm adding here also @Martin Urbanec in case he could help setting up a banner. Looking forward to hearing from you, Natalia Szelachowska (WMCZ) (talk) 20:39, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Campaign enabled. Martin Urbanec (talk) 21:22, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Natalia Szelachowska (WMCZ): I didn't see your message because you didn't ping me and there are some more campaigns around. ;) By enabling the campaign, Martin reduced the traffic without giving a reason. I've reverted this as there has already been a diet based on cookies. Furthermore, I've added the bold font weight and the purple text color. The campaign should be now as requested. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:42, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DerHexer thank you for your support! Natalia Szelachowska (WMCZ) (talk) 10:20, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @DerHexer, I did that change as I tried to follow the guidelines, which suggest keeping traffic at 50% or below, as well as using the cookies-based diet. Admittedly, I set the value to 65% (which is slightly higher than 50%), as this is a fairly major campaign, but this is the motivation for diets. That said, if you think that setting the cookie-based diet is enough, I don’t object to that at all. Best, Martin Urbanec (talk) 11:10, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Lowering the percentage doesn't make sense for many campaigns. I've put CN on the agenda for today. Let's talk about it there? :) I'd be bold and remove that part of the guidelines as this does not reflect common practice. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 11:59, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @DerHexer: - just letting you know that the visual elements are all loaded now. Please let me know if there is enough to proceed with the banners, if you have any questions, or if there needs to be any adjustments to suit the central notice process ... thanks!! Islahaddow (talk) 17:21, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

  • @Islahaddow and Anthere: Not an easy request. I've created a banner which looks pretty similar to your proposal and should also work on mobile (English desktop, French mobile preview). However, I had to crop the file but I didn't mirror it yet (I'm not sure if that would look natural). Please do so if you think that it would be better. Furthermore, I've added a [Help with translation] part so that the texts can be translated into more languages than English and French which you've also requested.
Usally, we only create campaigns in languages where the landing page is translated. However, your landing page is translatable right now (so is the banner now). Nonetheless, banner campaigns which do not only target logged-in users but readers should be promoted for feedback on the affected wikis. With English and French in mind, enwiki and frwiki should be informed at minimum. As you want to reach out to sister projects, usually you should also let them know before.
Since you've requested two campaigns with different settings, it might make most sense to limit the non-Africa campaign to logged-in users which would avoid the notifications to the larger projects because of banners for readers. The Africa focused campaign could be more easily activated for readers, too. Please tell me what you think about it before I start to create the campaigns. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:42, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello DerHexer. Looks great to me. I’ll share with the other members of the team so that we get more testing on different environment. The translate link will be very practical. Thanks for that.
I already announced the project on the French Wikipedia quite generously (pump, wikiproject pages etc.), but I will also add a note about the banner for safety.
If I understand you properly, you suggest that the banner could run for logged-in and anons on African countries. And that the banner would only run for logged-in in non African countries. If so, that looks great to me. One benefit of the campaign is to recruit African editors (so all editors looks good) and the other benefit is to get African Union content used on Wikipedia articles (and for this... only logged-in editors is best...). If I understood you well, we should go this way ! thanks Anthere (talk) 09:20, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello DerHexer - this looks great!! you have done a really awesome job - only problem is that the banner is linking to the wrong space. It needs to go to Africa Environment not to African Knowledge Initiative. Thanks so much Islahaddow (talk) 12:18, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oops, fixed right now. Thanks for the open eye! —DerHexer (Talk) 12:21, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Anthere and Islahaddow: What a ride! We cannot select continents but have to check or uncheck all countries individually. We now have the campaign for Africa and its banner for logged-in and anonymous users, as well as the campaign for non-African countries and its banner for logged-in users only (don't get confused by the wrong title). As they both have the same display and you've approved the preview, I've enabled both campaigns. Please ping me if you can find any mistakes! Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:59, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Congrats ! I had no idea we could now geo target at a lower level than the country... I wanted to ask you if the current geotag of Morocco included or did not included Western Sahara ? If it does not include Western Sahara, then we need to add it to the list of African countries to make sure it is not left behind. The « wrong » title could get confusing lol ! Otherwise, looks great to me. Let’s cross fingers. Thanks ! Anthere (talk) 17:43, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Haha, I couldn't find Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in the list, having had en:List of African countries by population open for the country check. I've just read now that it might be listed here as Western Sahara which it actually is. Already fixed. ;) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:00, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well yeah... it is a tiny bit more politically neutral to name that area Western Sahara... Anthere (talk)

Ahum. Now the next step is the WLA one :) Good news... same countries... (I hope you can duplicate stuff ? Or does that need to be rechecked entirely from scratch ? ) CentralNotice/Request/Wiki Loves Africa 2023 Anthere (talk) 17:46, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Description - Call for participation to Wiki Loves Africa 2023.

The banner is to promote the Wiki Loves Africa photo campaign. It is a call for participation. It is pretty much unchanged compared to previous years. The contest is open for 2 months (by popular support). We run the banner only in Africa (though the contest is open everywhere). Every year, 90% or so of our participants are new (and some are retained there after !), so running the banner for IP addresses is very important as it serves as recruitment system for new participants. The contest runs over all African countries. In some countries (around 25), local teams will organize activities. They are very much in ask for the banners (both because it helps promote the contest in countries where wikipedia is not very well known) and because it makes them feel we take them seriously (and we do of course...). Description - Wiki Loves Folklore is an international Photography contest held on Wikimedia Commons from 1st February till 31st March. The main motive of the project is to gather media from all round the globe so that it could be used on Wikipedia and other sites on the internet under free licence. These images are unique and the project aims to represent and document Intangible Heritage Culture. Wiki Loves Folklore campaign is designed in a dual structure. We have national coordinators and International Team. The role of national coordinators or country organisers is to organize Wiki Loves Folklore in a specific country and the role of International Team also includes to organize Wiki Loves Folklore in countries where there are no national coordinators. Thereby representing the underrepresented Countries under the Wikimedia ecosystem. This year we have specially crafted local banner images which have images of that country which has a national organiser so that it encourages local participation from a country. And the international Banner image to display winning and featured images during the contest. Since this is our 5th Year anniversary and this year we also celebrate 20th anniversary of UN convention on Intangible Culture Heritage we would like to target more reach and awareness as well as participation through the Central Notice.

  • @Tiven2240: Hey, it's very uncommon for an international project to ask for individual banners per country. Each country would require an individual campaign (and banner). This would mean work for about 20 campaigns in this request. Of course, we can take people by languages to the different landing pages. However, this is not possible per country within one banner. As of now, the status of many of the landing pages is very different: some barely exist. We wouldn't create campaigns for these right now. Please check back with the international team how you want to proceed. I can help you with the creation but likely not with these many. Please ping me. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:24, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Dear @DerHexer thank you for your comments. We have one global banner image ready for the banner File:WLF2023Banner.png. We will coordinate with the country organisers to create the landing page and i am sure they will be ready very soon. Also meanwhile can you share me the translation link of the text of the central notice banner so that we can share it for translation. --Tiven2240 (talk) 18:45, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Tiven2240: Just to be clear again: We will create only one campaign with one banner and photo (which leads to multiple landing pages), as it was done in 2022. We cannot use multiple country-related photos in one campaign. If you agree with that, I can create the campaign where the translation link will also be created then (therefore, I cannot provide a link for translation yet). Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 10:16, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Dear @DerHexer kindly help us with creation of two campaigns. One for the signed up language countries and another for the non signed up language countries. Thank you --Tiven2240 (talk) 17:46, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Tiven2240: I've created a campaign, banner, preview for the non-signed up language countries. For that purpose, I cloned the 2022 banner which already has some translations available from Wiki Loves Love 2020 (I don't know why you have used that); if need be, I can make a newly translatable text available. This leads to c:Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2023.
I've also created a campaign, banner, preview for all the signed up language countries. As said, it's not possible to use a country-specific banner under these circumstances; therefore I re-used the general banner. Please provide a landing page for all these signed up language countries; temporarily, I've linked it to c:Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2023/Organize. Same issue with text messages here: it re-uses the WLL texts; if need be, I can also enable newly translatable texts here.
Please let me know when both campaigns can be activated. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 19:57, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @DerHexer: and @Tiven2240:, we are organizing the national contest in Nigeria, and we will like the CN Banner linked to our landing page. See Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2023 in Nigeria. Thank you. T CellsTalk 14:06, 15 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@T Cells: Unfortunately, we cannot adjust the banner per country (only by language). For each of them, a new campaign would have to be created which is not feasible for the number of participating countries and the limitations of CentralNotice (campaigns cannot be copied but have to be created manually; the number of active CN admins is extremely low: just a handful). For that reason, I had proposed a joint landing page for the signed up countries which the orga committee didn't want. Therefore, I can offer you to add links to the Nigerian landing page from igwiki and yowiki (including multi-language wikis like Commons and Wikidata when users have ig or yo settings enabled). That's an easy hack which I can also do for other languages. Would that work for you? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 17:58, 15 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @User:DerHexer, I apologize for missing this message. Considering the limitations you highlighted above, let's add a link to the Nigerian landing page from yowiki (including multi-language wikis like Commons and Wikidata). How should the link be added? T CellsTalk 09:35, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@T Cells: I've implemented that as proposed. Please check this preview if it works as intended. @Tiven2240: I can do the same hacks for other languages (but not countries). I've already implemented a switch so that I can add other language codes and landing pages more easily. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 15:28, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you @User:DerHexer, that works. T CellsTalk 18:29, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Hi @User:DerHexer, the banner displayed on Commons, Wikidata and Meta is not linked to our landing page at c:Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2023 in Nigeria . Please help us link it to our landing page. Thank you for your help. Happy new month. T CellsTalk 08:11, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@T Cells: Please re-read my message: “Unfortunately, we cannot adjust the banner per country (only by language). For each of them, a new campaign would have to be created which is not feasible for the number of participating countries and the limitations of CentralNotice […] Therefore, I can offer you to add links to the Nigerian landing page from igwiki and yowiki (including multi-language wikis like Commons and Wikidata when users have ig or yo settings enabled).” Do you have ig or yo setting on those wikis mentioned, or English? In any other setting than ig or yo, people will be forwarded to the general landing page as said. If there's a bug with the multi-language forward, this would require professional developer ressources. I can only offer what I can offer. If it sticks to one more campaign, just for Nigeria, I might find some time today or tomorrow to create it. But I cannot promise it. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 09:58, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for the additional clarification @User:DerHexer. I apologise for my earliest misunderstanding. Regards. T CellsTalk 10:28, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No worries! :) Thank you for your understanding. —DerHexer (Talk) 10:33, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Comment Comment I have removed the reoccurring cycle for the not-participating countries banner. There is no need to show it every week on all projects in all languages: it only causes annoyance and will impact the banner experience for the banners on events that these targeted projects do have a local team in. I hope this is okay. It will still be shown 5 times to all, so creating awareness for the initiative (which I assume is the goal of the banner for countries/languages without a local team) is still in place. Ciell (talk) 11:29, 24 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Ciell can you please explain us why was this sudden decision taken by you in between of the contest? We could have discussed before any changes. --Tiven2240 (talk) 17:22, 25 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Happy to try and clarify @Tiven2240. To be clear: I have not turned it off, but only lowered the diet of this specific banner. The banner has been running for almost a month and daily visitors of the projects have seen 20 impressions, more if they have visited more than one project in these past weeks. There are a lot of banners lined up to start in March, and by lowering the diet of this banner for not-participating countries, those banners get more room. Sadly, we only have one banner space for all to use: we have to share and also be considerate to not lose the effect of banners in general.
I hope this helps, more in general about why we cannot show banners all the time is explained in this question of the CentralNotice Banner FAQ. Ciell (talk) 20:45, 25 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Comment Comment WMHU has a signed agreement with the WMF about this banner campaign. The campaign will be between 15th February and 20th May, separated into four periods. Active campaign periods were consulted with the Online Fundraising Team of the WMF:

  • 15 to 21 February,
  • 15 to 21 March,
  • 28 April to 5 May and
  • 12 to 20 May.

I am a CN admin, and I can handle and administrate the campaign myself as I did in the previous years. Samat (talk) 20:52, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@JBrungs (WMF): let me know if you have any concern about my changes in the calendar. Kind regards, Samat (talk) 21:14, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi @Samat,
This looks ok to me @TGorski (WMF), do you have any additional comments?
Best, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 07:17, 13 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Meanwhile, Tomasz answered me in an email that he has no further comments and wished best of luck with the campaign. If there is no further comments or objection, I will move the request to the approved ones. Samat (talk) 11:50, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Just an FYI that we have discussed internally a potential clash with a WMF Fundraising banner for Japan, and we're fine to defer to that banner during the overlapping request time. RStallman (WMF) (talk) 00:24, 11 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

  • @RStallman (WMF): I've created campaign and banner in accordance to the additional information received by email. You can check the preview here. There you can see, that I did some minor changes: “The Wikimedia Foundation” instead of “The Foundation” for clarification reasons. Furthermore, I've activated the campaign for all languages because this ToU change affects all communities and not only those which you were targeting here (likely because you will provide translations yourself here). But people on other projects can help with translations, too. I have activated that functionality in the banner. You can submit your translations into these languages here, just change to the target language. Of course, you can invite translators from around the world to submit further translations before the campaign will start. I will enable the campaign when you confirm the settings and preview. Please ping me. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 09:18, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks so much for your help! I'll run the details by our team and respond again if anything needs to be tweaked or if we're ready to go for when the comment period begins on February 21st. RStallman (WMF) (talk) 23:18, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello again, DerHexer. The team approves of the banner. Thank you! There is a tweak to the dates of the campaign. We'd like it to begin on February 22nd instead of the 21st to make sure all of the content is definitely up when we send people to review it, and ending one day earlier on April 20th. When inviting translators, do I make a post on Meta:Babel with a link to this page? Thanks for your advice! My first go at this. RStallman (WMF) (talk) 00:27, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Just a quick note, I have made the WMF legal team aware of this request and will update decisions here and with @Jetam2 directly. Thanks JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 08:27, 21 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@JBrungs (WMF): Thank you for the note.--Jetam2 (talk) 17:46, 23 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Note to admins, WMF and the user group have signed an agreement and the user group can run the tax banners. @Jetam2 have a good campaign. Best, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 07:13, 23 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@JBrungs (WMF) Thank you for the notification. So, there should be no other problem with running this, right?--Jetam2 (talk) 09:31, 24 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Not from the WMF's side, now that the agreement is signed. JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 09:49, 24 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@DerHexer and Martin Urbanec: Could we get this going, please? Or let me know if there is an issue? Thank you!--Jetam2 (talk) 13:58, 25 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Jetam2 and JBrungs (WMF): I cannot remember that volunteer CentralNotice administrators have ever set up a fundraising campaign. Personally, I volunteer to support community outreach, content creation, event advertisement, and such. Raising funds should be left to professionals, including setting up the campaigns. — I think I wouldn't want to take this responsibility here. There are plenty of fundraising banner campaign experts (e.g., at WMF or WMDE) among the CentralNotice administrators who could help much better here. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 14:47, 27 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DerHexer: What makes you hesitate? Everything has been set up already, we just need to enable the banners. The Foundation okayed it, the community okayed it. Fundraising banners have been done in the past. How can we resolve this? Pinging the whole group? PS: I did not think of using that list as admins (as volunteers) are listed on the request page.--Jetam2 (talk) 19:32, 27 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jetam2: What do you mean with “has been set up already”? I cannot find a campaign on Special:CentralNotice nor a usable banner on Special:CentralNoticeBanners. Therefore, both have to be created. The banner draft you've provided contains wikimarkup which we cannot use here. So we have to develop a similar banner first which will take some time. Then, we have to test the banner for logged-in, anonymous, desktop, mobile and in all combinations. All in all, this will take between 15 and 30 minutes. As said, I will invest my time for creating the various community campaigns which have been proposed instead of a fundraising campaign when there are hired fundraising experts who could set up these. Certainly, you can ping other stewards or CentralNotice administrators. As you've found the list of people, you are already aware who has actually set up CN banner campaigns here in 2022. Maybe you can motivate others to help out here. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:38, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DerHexer: Dear Der Hexer. To be honest, I am quite baffled by your response and still not quite sure what to say but at the same time feel rather pressed on time as the last weeks of our inteded campaign are quickly ticking by (tax returns are to be handed in by 31 March) so here it is. You make it sound as if this was a commercial project. It is not, the funds collected will ultimately go towards content creation as you request. We will probably collect between five hundred and a thousand Euros and this is the majority of our non-WMF funding. Hiring an external expert does quite match it. There are several similar campaigns done in the past, some self enabled. I am not able to tell whether by (at the time) staff or not. Some have no indication. Correct me, please, if I am wrong, but I have not found any "fundraising needs to have own staff" disclaimer on Central Notice pages. It might be a good idea to include this to avoid further delays in the future.
I have used similar wikimarkup before and it has not been a problem (as far as I could tell) so I was unaware that there was any special markup required.
What I found was the volunteers listed on the Request page and as I wrote above I had no way of knowing that they (or at least one) would refuse and that I should look for alternatives. You linked the list and thank you for that. So, I will scramble and contact other possible providers off-wiki first, hopefully that will work.--Jetam2 (talk) 21:39, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

  • @Jetam2: Alright, all community campaigns are finished and I still had some minutes left. I've created the campaign and banner (preview). There must be some space around the text and logo. I hope that this till works for you. Two notes: 1) Why do you want to have the campaign running for logged-in users, too? I think that all fundraising campaigns nowadays are limited to anonymous users. 2) Please get the landing page fixed, I get this error: Warning: Trying to access array offset on value of type null in /data/d/0/d02453b1-a9d8-495d-b9d5-7190f53fd509/wikimedia.sk/web/wp-content/plugins/cta/classes/class.cta.render.php on line 492
As soon as these things are solved and you confirm the settings, I can enable the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:45, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DerHexer: Thank you for setting that up. 1) not sure what everyone else does but as far as I know we have not made any distinction here, logged-in users can send their tax contribution as well as logged-out users. It is a good reminder in any case. 2) okay, let me try to fix the landing page.--Jetam2 (talk) 15:53, 5 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As the orga team of the room, we are trying to reach out to more community members through various channels. To place a banner was recommended to us for this project. Therefore we would like to use this occasion to invite the logged in users from Berlin for the first time (see the decision in the protocol). We are curious to see how many people will sign up. Thank you for your support.

Banners - Please use the standard banner with logo File:Wikipedia20_hashflag.svg and text „Feier mit uns den 22. Wikipedia-Geburtstag: 16. März in Berlin!“ I have already tested it on testwiki - see source code, preview

Discussion[edit]

Hi DerHexer, please let us know if anything is missing. If you'd be able to create the simple banner, I'll immediately get it translated. Thank you for all your help and apologies about the rushed nature of this request. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 12:38, 9 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @MPourzaki (WMF): I've created the campaign and banner. Please check these and the preview. Once you've approved it, I can enable the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 12:54, 9 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    @MPourzaki (WMF): Like this? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:49, 9 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    Done, enabled. —DerHexer (Talk) 19:17, 9 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
