About

  • Athan Stephanopoulos is EVP and Chief Digital Officer of CNN Worldwide, overseeing the digital worldwide business, including editorial, product, technology, business operations and innovation strategies. He is based in New York.

Stephanopoulos joined CNN after more than nine years at NowThis, where he served as president and led the brand to become one of the largest and fastest growing digital news outlets for a Gen Z and Millennial audience. In his role as president, Stephanopoulos oversaw all operations of the brand -- including editorial, revenue, product and technology strategy, audience development and data insights. He helped guide the brand through its acquisition and integration into Group Nine Media in 2019, where he sat on the executive leadership team and helped lead key strategic initiatives and partnerships. He again guided the brand during its integration into Vox Media following the acquisition of Group Nine in early 2022.

During his tenure at NowThis, Stephanopoulos was responsible for launching several content verticals for the brand, which included coverage across politics, entertainment, sports, female empowerment (NowThis Her), science and technology (NowThis Future), climate and sustainability (NowThis Earth), justice and equity (NowThis Justice), financial literacy (NowThis Money), gaming and pop culture (NowThis Nerd). He also expanded the brand offering internationally with the launch of NowThis Español, NowThis India and NowThis Mandarin (offering NowThis programming in mainland China across all their major social platforms).

Under Stephanopoulos' leadership, the company launched NowThis Originals in 2017 to develop, produce, and co-produce various limited series, documentaries and short films, that were sold to TV and streaming buyers. Stephanopoulos served as an Executive Producer on several projects including Empty Net (NBC Sports), Virginia 12th (Facebook Watch), Generation Columbine (Starz), A Secret Love (Netflix), Uprooted (Discovery+), and Two Distant Strangers (Netflix), which won an Academy Award for Best Short Live Action Film in 2021.

In 2019, Stephanopoulos launched NowThis Impact, a division of the brand that is dedicated to covering and fostering engagement on the issues most important to young audiences. The effort launched with a partnership with Emerson Collective, in order to develop and distribute content on key issues -- from the climate crisis and voting rights to immigration and gun reform -- that not only informed and inspired young audiences but gave them clear ways to meaningfully engage on the issue.

Prior to NowThis, Stephanopoulos was the Founder and CEO of a Cliptamatic, a social video distribution platform that was acquired by NowThis in 2014. A long list of media companies utilized the technology platform to distribute videos across the social web -- including Paramount Pictures, HBO, ABC News, AMC Networks, MTV, Starz and Saturday Night Live.

Stephanopoulos is a graduate of Willamette University with a bachelor's degree in political science and religious studies and holds an MBA in Communications & Media Management from Fordham University's Graduate School of Business. He has served on the board of advisors for Fordham's School of Business and also served as an adjunct professor teaching courses on media entrepreneurship and social media. He is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations.

Stephanopoulos lives in New York with his wife and two children.
