January job openings and quits decrease; layoffs and discharges increase

03/08/2023

The number of job openings decreased to 10.8 million on the last business day of January. The number of hires changed little at 6.4 million. Quits decreased to 3.9 million but layoffs and discharges increased to 1.7 million. Annual levels and rates for 2022 are now available.

December job openings rates increased in 10 states and the District of Columbia and decreased in 1. Hires rates rose in 4 states. Total separations rates rose in 7 states and fell in 6; quits rates fell in 5 and rose in 3, and layoffs and discharges rates rose in 7 and fell in 7.

Job openings rate 9.1 percent in West Virginia in December 2022

In December 2022, West Virginia had the highest job openings rate, 9.1 percent, in December 2022, followed by Louisiana (8.7 percent) and Alaska (8.5 percent). The states with the lowest job openings rates in December 2022 were New York (4.6 percent), New Jersey (5.4 percent), Connecticut (5.7 percent), and Hawaii (5.8 percent).
