The Jewess Patriot: Israeli Company’s Goal To Make Subways Safe Internationally

The headlines around America and Europe are scary almost daily.  Train accidents are happening way too often.  If we are learning anything about what happened in Ohio, we are becoming more aware of how local and federal governments can’t help innocent victims on trains and in the neighborhoods that can control train safety.

One Israeli, Shahar Hania, Founder and CEO of Rail Vision, can solve the problem.

I recently interviewed Hania about his business and how train safety could lead to other transportation safety in a very cost effective manner.

Hania is a soft spoken father of nine who lives in Israel.  He has a B.Sc. in Physics and Electro-optics Engineering from JCT (Jerusalem College of Technology) and a M.Sc. in electro-optics engineering from Ben-Gurion University. He has been involved in technology and engineering for two decades.  His leadership and achievements have been featured by Bloomberg, Fortune and The Wall Street Journal.  

Last month, a leading US-based rail and leasing services company purchased a Rail Vision SwitchYard System to evaluate its performance during a six-month trial. More companies will be announced in the near future as train accidents have made this technology necessary and timely.

We discussed how Rail Vision’s business works.

According to Hania, Rail Vision is the leading provider of obstacle detection & classification systems in the railway industry. With the company’s unique cognitive sensor fusion technology, based on advanced electro-optic sensors, artificial intelligence and deep learning, Rail Vision systems detect objects on and along the tracks from a distance of up to 2km – in real time, as well as in all weather and light conditions.

Rail Vision’s unique technology is able to provide trains the assistance it needs once an obstacle is detected with a system that sends visual and acoustic alerts in real-time to both the driver and the command-and-control center. Tailormade to meet the customer’s specific needs, the systems are available for Main Lines and Shunting Yards, as well as Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) operating in urban environments. In addition, Rail Vision offers a range of optional complementary features based on collected and analyzed data: image-based navigation, GIS mapping and predictive maintenance.

For someone like me, a technology “dummie,” the vision sensors combined with artificial intelligence enables the monitoring of operational dead zones to facilitate secure wagon coupling and sends real-time visual and acoustic alerts to remote operators and drivers, ensuring a safe and secure environment.  That means there is a unique warning in place to carefully time a train’s emergency systems to stop a train and avoid hitting cars on a track or go off track and tumble.

We also talked about how the advances of the system will help so many areas update their infrastructures, a topic both major parties in America have been discussing and have not been able to successfully plan and execute.

According to research firm Statista, there have been more than 91,000 train accidents in the US alone since 2013, accounting for more than 61,000 injuries and more than 6,000 fatalities, according to Statista. These accidents cost untold billions in lost freight, repairs, healthcare costs and resulting civil lawsuits. 

Recently, Ian Jeffries, the president and CEO of the Association of American Railways, called on Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Congress to move quickly to adopt new technology to make railways safer.

The company started in 2016. They are located in Raanana.  They are currently partnered with Knorr-Bremse, Israel Railways and Nvidia.  

Hania has been the Chief Executive Officer at Rail Vision Ltd. since November 2020.
