We are very happy with the result. It is solid! Hilltop takes pride in their work and wants to deliver high quality. After we saw how diligently Hilltop worked on the fence, we also decided to hire them for painting the house. In every large construction project, there are complications - some of them unexpected. Our protected redwoods trees provided a particular challenge requiring the fence contractor to work around the trees and their roots while not narrowing the drive way too much. This is where we really appreciated Hilltop's experience and communication. Hilltop asked us about our choices, for example, for the look of the fence or the positions of gates but was also great in pointing where these choices would result in problems later down the road we did not think of. Hilltop ultimately came up with great solutions. Hilltop also asked us frequently whether we are happy with the work and was willing to make the necessary adjustments and iterate until the job was done properly and to our satisfaction - sometimes going beyond of what was specified in the contract! This also applies to the job of painting our house. Finally, I want to share some lessons I learned when comparing different fence contractors: 1. Hilltop is one of the few contractors using screws rather than nails for their fences (and Jose from Hilltop fencing will point that out to you as well). This reflects the fact that Hilltop builds fences that are meant to last. Even though the new fence has not passed the test of time, I can already report that it is way more stable than compared to fences that are just nailed together and for which you can see the nails working their way out other time. 2. Pretty much all fence contractors use 8 foot posts for a 6 foot fence. In theory, this leaves 2 feet of the post for the foundation. And even though many fance contractors state the foundation will be 2 feet, the actual foundation will be a couple of inches short of that to, for example, account for unevenness of the terrain. I want to thank Hilltop for explaining this and answering countless other questions I had about the foundation and the fence. I had backed my car into the gate and the welds holding the opener were broken. They came out the same day we called for an estimate and fixed the gate the following day. They reinforced the gate and added a "stop" so the gate wouldn't open toward the front. I pointed out that the wrought iron fence they had installed two years ago had a few places where the paint was beginning to flake and they re-painted the fence while they were there. They did a great job of rebuilding the fence just the way we wanted it. Afterwards, they put primer on and then one coat of paint. At first it looked OK but after a couple of weeks, it looked like it needed another coat of paint. I called Hugh, the owner and explained the situation and without any hesitation, he arranged for them to come out and put another coat of paint on it and now it looks great. Jorge came out to give me an estimate for the fence at a price well below another bid from an unlicensed contractor. He was punctual and very polite giving suggestions while listening to what I envisioned the fence would look like. He was extremely flexible in scheduling the work around an extremely tight schedule since we wanted the fence in before we could move into our newly purchased home. He was able to complete the fence within a few days, and schedule time to return to paint the fence and gates so that we would have it finished in time to move in with our golden retriever within a short period of time after the house was purchased. They cleaned the brushes on the side of my wood fence and left it really shiny. Instead of putting the stuff under the gate when they stained it, they put it all down on the pavers so that was a mess. It’s disintegrating little by little. They said that they could call the pavers out and remove the fence but told them I just can’t go through that right now. You can tell the difference between the side that they stained and the other fence so we wanted somebody to come in and paint it. We had a new, high-quality redwood fence installed in our back yard and decided we wanted it stained versus being left as redwood. The goal was to have it blend more into the surroundings and help enlarge the feeling our small city yard. Looking through Angie’s List and other online services sites we narrowed down our choices to a few contractors. After meeting with Robert, understanding his appreciation for detail and his knowledge we chose him for staining our fence. Instead of blindly doing whatever we said, Robert explained the tradeoffs of our options and we mutually worked together on the best option. As a result we have a nicely Deep Forest Green fence that makes our backyard look wonderful! Further he made the right choices of materials for our deck and metal spindles while others would have not have paid attention to that detail and used the same stain.
