Here is where an invisible fence comes in. A system is set up that creates an invisible barrier along the perimeter of a yard. Electrical signals are emitted that react with a device attached to a dog's collar. If the pet tries to leave the yard, an electric impulse mildly shocks the animal, startling it. The stimulus is usually preceded by beeping and, over time, the pet learns to respect the beeping to avoid the shock.
Invisible fences are reliable and adaptable and don't interefere with your yard's aesthetics. There are some drawbacks to consider before installation including the fact that pets can still escape if they are truly frightened or see something they want to chase. They may be willing to ignore the electric stimulus. There is also less protection and privacy for your home and an invisible fence doesn't prevent other dogs and animals from entering.
