The associated page is used by the TitleBlacklist MediaWiki extension, and lists strings of regular expressions that may not be used as page titles or usernames on any Wikimedia projects. Any Meta-Wiki administrator or steward can edit this blacklist.

For more information on what the title blacklist is for, and the processes used here, please see Title blacklist/About.

Please post comments to the appropriate section below: Proposed additions, Proposed removals, or Troubleshooting and problems, read the messageboxes at the top of each section for an explanation. Also, please check back some time after submitting, there could be questions regarding your request. In addition to that, please sign your posts with ~~~~ after your comment.

Completed requests are archived, additions and removal are logged.

SpBot archives all sections tagged with {{Section resolved|1=~~~~}} after 1 day and sections whose most recent comment is older than 30 days.

Proposed additions[edit]

Symbol comment vote.svg This section is for proposing that a page title be blacklisted; add new entries at the bottom of the section. Provide links demonstrating widespread creation by multiple users or IP's. Completed requests will be marked as done or denied and archived.

nikomok in ara and its derivatives[edit]

Hello,
This term was proposed on frWP for approval by administrators. Some arWP administrators were also contacted to give their opinion, according to the ara language. There is no project in the ara language, so the term in the title may go unnoticed in the fr or ar languages. Opinions were unopposed and in favor of global addition. The final RegEx is

.*(?<!(Dome))(n+(i+[ckhqu]{1,2}e?\s?o+u*|a+r+di+n+[ea]+)m+o+u*[ck]|يلعن دين أمك)(?!(y|o|hi|Life|i)\b).* <newaccountonly|antispoof> # inappropriate username

Cordially. ―Eihel (talk) 14:46, 20 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello @Billinghurst:, what do you think about it? ―Eihel (talk) 22:13, 28 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Complex, and I have no idea how it would be impacted by the antispoof component. I also have no idea what we are trying to stop or the consequences/impact of such an addition. I will defer to the stewards who will have a better idea of what is being locked.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:04, 29 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Proposed removals[edit]

Symbol comment vote.svg This section is for proposing that a title be unlisted; please add new entries at the bottom of the section. Remember to provide the specific title or regex blacklisted, links to the articles they are used in or useful to, and arguments in favour of unlisting. Completed requests will be marked as done or denied and archived. The addition or removal of a title is not a vote, please do not bold the first words in statements.

Troubleshooting and problems[edit]

Symbol comment vote.svg This section is for comments related to problems with the blacklist (such as incorrect syntax or entries not being blocked), or problems saving a page because of a blacklisted title. This is not the section to request that an entry be unlisted (see Proposed removals above).

Suggestion[edit]

When someone attempts to register with a username that is blacklisted for technical reasons (for example, ends with semi a custom message), a custom message other than this should pop up to make the message less confusing and to tell the user why the username isn't allowed.

Also:

  • .\bYA!\b.* should be .*\bYA!\b.* (missing a *)
  • Characters that were previously disallowed by filter 1168 on enwiki should be added with a custom message (see w:Special:AbuseFilter/1168). Perhaps circled letters, numbers, stuff in the U+2400-U+2420 unicode range and roman numerals should be added also (though I can't be sure they won't normalize.)
  • more examples of possible username violations you can add here that likely won't catch false positives can be found at here and here.
  • shouldn't the code for the F-word end with .* instead of +?

Feature requests belong at phabricator:  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:22, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Billinghurst Can't we use custom messages by using stuff like this: (<errmsg=titleblacklist-semicolon>)? I feel like this would be less confusing than "do not create usernames that are offensive or misleading" when someone tries to add a semicolon or excessive puncuation to the end their name. 163.116.130.27 13:30, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Also, there are some entries in the "strong language" section that ends with + instead of .*. This is a typo on this very page. Also, there are stuff in w:User:AmandaNP/UAA/Blacklist and w:Mediawiki:titleblacklist that would be good to add to this blacklist. 163.116.130.27 13:33, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No, all errmsg are local constructs, we cannot host a local global message. WMF wikis are effectively stringed together, each of the global msgs are effectively locally hosted, so the blacklists are visible settings leveraging local messages, sort of like how Commons can be used globally. You need phabricator.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:38, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Billinghurst What about:
  1. The stuff in the "strong language" section that ends with + when it's supposed to end with .* (the F-word is one, quite a few false negatives from this one)?
  2. And is there anything in w:User:AmandaNP/UAA/Blacklist or w:Mediawiki:titleblacklist that would be worth adding here as well?

This is a very crude tool, a sledgehammer. People are always welcome to nominate text where we are clearly resolving a problem. User accounts can only be prohibited here, otherwise each wiki control (include and exclude) text. People can build lists, and local admins and stewards can implement based on the community consensus and their knowledge of impact. Additions to this list should be the last resort, not first, especially due to the limited lens available and the lack of visible logging.  — billinghurst sDrewth 21:43, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, I understand. However, there are some that seem like obvious typos to me:
.*FU[C(K]+K+ <newaccountonly|antispoof> (missing a .* at the end, so if the username doesn't end with this word it's not blacklisted)
.\bYA!\b.* <newaccountonly> (missing an asterisk at the beginning after the period)
There are also several others that don't end with .* bot look like they should.
Thanks

Quite possibly, though these are essentially minor issues and will not be creating false positives. They can wait until someone has the time and enthusiasm to get around to them, or there is clear evidence that they are not working as required. Thanks for noting them, though please identify the true purpose of the blacklist, it is a management device, not a perfection device.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:22, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
