Kaspersky has explored cryptocurrency user trends, finding that just 25 percent of respondents felt well informed about potential cryptocurrency cyberthreats, while 23 percent had no information at all. In a survey, Kaspersky also discovered that half respondents had been affected by cryptocurrency crime in some way, with 40 percent of crypto owners did not believe current protection systems for cryptocurrency were effective. These and other findings are in Kaspersky’s new report.

Kaspersky’s experts share their predictions for challenges in Security Operation Centers (SOCs). In 2022, the number of incidents in government and mass media segments grew, and the trend will continue this year. SOCs from these – and other industries – are likely to face more reoccurring targeted attacks, as will supply chain attacks via telecommunication providers. Another threat awaiting SOCs is more initial compromises through public-facing applications. Organizations that are threatened by ransomware attacks might also encounter data destruction. From an internal point of view, SOC teams face personnel shortages and increasing demand for efficiencies.

On January 19, Kaspersky researchers reported on a new domain name system (DNS) changer functionality used in the Roaming Mantis campaign. Now cybercriminals can use compromised Wi-Fi routers in cafes, airports hotels and other public places to potentially infect more Android smartphones with the Wroba.o malware. At the moment, the new technique targets users in South Korea, but it can be soon implemented in other countries as well.

BlueNoroff is known as the threat actor that targets financial entities’ cryptocurrency around the world, specifically aiming at venture capital firms, crypto startups, and banks. Now the BlueNoroff actor is experimenting with new file types to convey their malware more efficiently and have created more than 70 fake domains of venture capital firms and banks to lure the employees of startups into a trap.
