More than 740 trained Red Cross disaster workers are helping people in California —including 12 from the National Capital & Greater Chesapeake Region. Back-to-back storms caused $1 billion+ in damage after devastating flooding, landslides, sinkholes and damage to infrastructure.

Parts of the country are being affected by severe winter weather. Follow your local office, listen to your local officials, and stay warm. ⚠️ Stay off the roads, if possible. If you must drive, stay cautious. Ice & snow mean you should take it slow! ready.gov/winter-weather
Houses and buildings with snow on the roof "Winter weather wisdom. Keep heater at least 3 feet from anything that can catch fire. Only use generators ouside, at least 20 feet from window and doors. Check on your neighbors ot make sure they're okay. Never use your oven to heat your home"

A winter storm will produce a swath of heavy snow from the Middle Mississippi Valley & Great Lakes this morning to the Northeast this afternoon. An icy wintry mix is also expected for portions of the Interior Northeast. Hazardous travel conditions are likely in impacted areas.

1/12/23: During the National EM Basic Academy graduation ceremony of an online instructor-led course, we reached a significant milestone. A student from the Sitka Tribe of Alaska, became the 3,000th graduate of the Academy since it was founded in 2011.

Never underestimate the risks a snowstorm may bring to your area! Always listen to the orders of your local officials and have different ways to receive weather alerts. Also, make sure you restock your family emergency kit with everyone’s needs in mind. ready.gov/winter

The answer is... bridges.  Bridges freeze first because there is no ground underneath, so the entire structure is surrounded by cold air. Slow down when driving in freezing temperatures, especially on bridges. weather.gov/safety/winter-
