How the Employment Cost Index Is Used?
The Employment Cost Index, or ECI, measures changes in the cost of employees to employers over time. In the private sector, business owners and human resources professionals can use the ECI to make decisions about pay adjustments to help them stay competitive. In the public sector, the Federal Reserve and others use the ECI to gauge the health of the labor market, adjust contracts, and research the labor market. read more »

Compensation costs up 1.2% Jun 2022 to Sep 2022 and up 5.0% over the year ending Sep 2022

Compensation costs increased 1.2 percent for civilian workers, seasonally adjusted, from June 2022 to September 2022. Over the year, total compensation rose 5.0 percent, wages and salaries rose 5.1 percent, and benefit costs rose 4.9 percent.

Private industry union benefit costs average $21.24 per hour worked in September 2022

Employer costs for private industry union workers averaged $31.95 per hour worked for wages and salaries and $21.24 for benefits in September 2022. Nonunion wage and salary costs averaged $27.56 per hour worked while benefit costs averaged $10.81.

Employer costs for total compensation in private industry rose 5.2 percent from September 2021 to September 2022. After adjusting for consumer price inflation, constant-dollar total compensation declined 2.8 percent in the private sector from September 2021 to September 2022. read more »
