Page References Cite Error[edit]

I made a edit to a page (Atari VCS (2021 console) which used a different cite source. This was done in the infobox. Everything looks good except in the References section the old source shows as Cite error: The named reference Atari Annual Meeting was invoked but never defined. I am not sure how to remove this error. I am not sure how to resolve this.

Atari VCS (2021 console) Elosnoc (talk) 00:17, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Elosnoc, in your edits you replaced a named reference, "ref name="Atari Annual Meeting", with a different reference with more up-to-date information. However the reference is also used elsewhere in the infobox and your removal of the definition caused the problem. I will fix it by copying the full reference definition back in. Visual Editor, which you were using, usually takes care of this automatically. But it seems to have problems when the reused named references like this are in a template like the infobox. Chippendales[edit]

There is something weird going on at Chippendales , the article is poorly written and controlled by people who admit a WP:COI. I added WP:RS and paraphrased the info. I did not read the talk page first. Who does? There seems to be an attempt keep the page written as an advertisement for customers and not an encyclopedic article. 0mtwb9gd5wx (talk) 02:55, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

0mtwb9gd5wx, there has been an ongoing campaign for several years to add the name Bruce Nahin to that article, and to overstate and inflate his importance. I have semi-protected the article for a year as a result. I see that you also tried to add Nahin's name, and also used the unreliable clickbait Newsweek site as a reference. That article is obviously promotional. See WP:NEWSWEEK. As for the editor with an admitted conflict of interest as a former employee, that editor limits himself to edit requests on the article talk page, which is entirely appropriate. In my opinion, Nahin appears to be a fabulist and his claims about himself are without merit. Cullen328 (talk) 18:41, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Your stories[edit]

I have been donating to support your website for several yrs now and yes did so this yr. However, this is likely the last time that I will. The reason for this is that I’m seeing over and over again, how people are able to edit material on themselves and so your articles are not completely factual. It’s happening more and more over time. If I’m going to your site to find information, I’m starting to question the authenticity of your material.

Until I see this change I will no longer support your site financially. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.164.171.12 (talk) 05:50, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As someone who practices skepticism, I encourage people to critically think about the material they ingest rather than accepting it as gospel. People are strongly discouraged from creating or editing articles about themselves per WP:AUTO, and those that cross the line find themselves blocked eventually. If you want to take your money elsewhere that's totally fine; the Wikimedia Organization isn't hurting for funds anytime soon. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 08:05, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
All editorial decisions and actions hare accomplished by unpaid self-selected volunteers, so for this particular problem, your donation decision has no effect. If you want to help fix this problem, start editing articles. Revert those bad edits. Add notices about WP:COI. You have just as much authority and responsibility as the rest of us. Start small by commenting on the article's talk pages until you get some experience, and then learn a little about how we handle COI, and then jump right in. Good luck! We need you. -Arch dude (talk) 15:50, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wrong forum

A page directed me here to say this but the user detailed under the section ‘Editor's edit summaries (language, tone)’ is highly disruptive and I was wondering what can be done about it.

Here is the thread :)

Hey all, good morning.

I'm concerned by Sparkle1 (talk · contribs) and the tone they use in edit summaries. This has been in the back of my mind for a while, and I've stopped myself from making a big thing about it, but I think maybe we've got to a point where a little advice is needed. I'm not an admin so my actions are limited.

 1. . Use of the phrase "stupid new inclusion" and "cancerous" here - [1]
 2. . Removal of a large amount of content without a summary here - [2]
 3. . A run of edits on Leeds Council election articles using somewhat theatrical language here [3] which I did mention in the project page here [4] where I tagged Sparkle1 without their input to date.

At the beginning of the month they had some back and forth on their talk page with very harsh and uncooperative language ("I am completely not interested") here [5].

I would like to ask if I'm right to be concerned by their tone and language, whether I am being too "soft" in being concerned here? They seem to be very constructive editors in some ways but there are moments of conflict and temper that I now think might need guidance in dealing with. Once I've posted this here, I'll put the link on their talk page. doktorb wordsdeeds 06:13, 17 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Unfortunately, this page isn't for resolving editor issues. I hope to find the time to write an essay collecting all the recommendations for dealing with "disruptive" editors. Unfortunately, I've only gotten as far as collecting links to some of the "how to" pages. Here's my list:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution_requests/Guide
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution_requests

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Disruptive_editing#Dealing_with_disruptive_editors
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Competence_is_required
Hope this helps. Butwhatdoiknow (talk) 15:56, 17 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree, this should be dealt with. The user in question has many notices on their talk page for changing an article to suit their opinion, especially on LGBT rights articles. In talk pages, the user uses lots of biased information and is ready to start edit wars on purpose in order to get their way.
The user also has been known to swear on talk pages and threaten people while editing in the edit summaries, and seems to think that they are always correct and they have the power to accept others’ contributions.

What is the difference between - and – ?[edit]

I have found the 2022–23 Bangladesh Premier League players' draft article and the 2022-23 Futsal Club Championship article to have different dashes used between the years 2022 to 2023. The first uses [1] while the other uses -[2] .

(Google is having trouble giving me results as it just keeps deleting these dashes in the actual search and just keeping the 'vs' so I'm asking you all!)

edit: I think according to Manual of Style/Dates and numbers § Ranges the second article's (2022–23 Bangladesh(...)) name should be changed. Am I correct?[edit]

3point1415 (talk) 14:33, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

See MOS:DASH. 2022-23 Futsal Club Championship should be moved to 2022–23 Futsal Club Championship.

(edit conflict) @3point1415: The specific guideline about the use of en dashes in date ranges is MOS:DATERANGE. The short answer is that 2022-23 Futsal Club Championship should be moved to a title with an en dash (2022–23 Futsal Club Championship) rather than a hyphen, which will leave a redirect at the title with a hyphen to allow it to be searched for in that way. Immediately above where you posted your message it says: "Ask your question at the bottom of this page ...", so I have moved your message from the top of the page to the right place chronologically & added a section heading. Your message will presumably not have been noticed where it was misplaced, but I think the answer would have been that the previous date of birth in Chris Stringer wasn't supported by any reference to an independent reliable source so ought not to have been added. Please note also for the future that messages on talk pages such as here ought to be terminated with a signature. --David Biddulph (talk) 23:47, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Regnir Note that Wikipedia has two articles for Chris Stringer, namely Chris Stringer and Chris Stringer (footballer). The former had an uncited DOB which has now been removed. Our guidance at WP:DOB points out that articles should only include such private information if it has been widely published in reliable sources. Should you wish to have the information included at Chris Stringer (and there is no reason why you should), please make an edit request at Talk:Chris Stringer citing such sources. You should not directly edit that article yourself owing to your obvious conflict of interest. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:22, 29 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Johnragla Google queries are not good references, because the specific results that Google returns can change from minute to minute, and they won't be the same for the next reader. You can USE Google to find sources, but when you cite a source in a draft or article, you should use the exact page link that has the info, not the search query. Notability[edit]

If the only sources I can find about a person are obituaries, is that person notable enough for an article? Mucube (talkcontribs) 21:07, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Possibly. It depends on whether those obituaries are 1) reliably published and 2) independent (eg., were they written by a family member or colleague of the deceased, or by somebody with no particular connection?). There is also a question of how many obituaries, and whether they are actually different or some are recycled from others. ColinFine (talk) 21:42, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello,

I am new to this and tried to create a new page, but can't see to change the page name:

I want to change the page name to "Old Lockhart House". Any help to do this is much appreciated.

If you were to submit the sandbox draft for AFC review and if it were to be accepted for publication in mainspace, the reviewer would sort out the article title, but obviously at the moment it's nowhere near fit for mainspace. You need to read the various useful links which were provided to you in the welcome message on your user talk page a number of years ago. - David Biddulph (talk) 07:34, 29 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
When you are reading the tutorial and other links, two of the things for you to look at are the Manual of Style and the guidance on referencing for beginners. --David Biddulph (talk) 07:39, 29 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If you follow David Biddulph's advice, you won't need to manually create a table of contents. The Wiki software will take care of that. David10244 (talk) 07:48, 29 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I will, however, move it from a generic sandbox to "Draft" space. See Draft:Old Lockhart House. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:34, 29 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Misgendering a notable persons child within an article[edit]

An article about a notable person misgenders one of their children, with a citation from many years ago. A template like in universe that doesn't mention fiction[edit]

Does anyone know if there is a template similar to the in universe template, but with out the "work or element of fiction" wording? I'm wanting to use it on an article about a religious concept, that is written in such a way that it takes for granted both the veracity of the religious beliefs, and the reader's familiarity with them. In other words - it is written for someone steeped in the universe of that religion, and is not accessible to people outside it.

That said, although I do not believe or practice that religion, I recognize that it is insulting to insinuate that someone's deeply held beliefs are a "work of fiction". I think there is a difference between religious beliefs and true fiction. Well, @ONUnicorn and @Doniago, that template says "Place (the Context template) at the top of an article of which you believe does not identify itself sufficiently to readers unfamiliar with its subject". It will place the article into categories including "Category:Wikipedia introduction cleanup". Maybe that's OK though. David10244 (talk) 00:59, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Misgendering Greta Thunberg[edit]

On Greta Thunberg's wikipedia page, she/her pronouns are used to describe them the entirety of the page. However, they use they/them pronouns, and there are many articles online stating such. It's a protected page, so I'm pretty sure I'm unable to edit it, as it didn't give me an edit option? If someone would be able to fix their pronouns on their Wikipedia page or somehow give me access to do it, that would be respectful to them and their gender.

Deallabastian (talk) 04:24, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deallabastian this has been discussed previously, however if you are able to provide a reliable source which state's Greta's preferred pronouns you would be best suited to start a new discussion of the topic on the article's talk page. Greyjoy talk 04:28, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Reattribution of IP to account[edit]

Hi,

I recently created an account and have edits under an IP address. Is it possible to reattribute them to my new account name? The other page is not being updated since 2005, so I'm not sure where else to ask. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. CISEditor (talk) 04:56, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The attribution of the earlier edits can't be changed, but you can put a note on your user page to say which IP address you previously used. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:28, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Where to start a discussion on whether an editor's edits can be reverted on sight?[edit]

I have been involved with an topic- and permanently-banned editor whose litany of unprovoked engvar and engvar-like changes (without consensus, no less) makes it difficult and time-wasting to seek consensus for every little area that they changed. If I were to seek consensus every time, it would probably take tens of RMs and a few RfCs, not to mention hundreds of edits, to revert every engvar change that they made.

Is there a way to start a discussion to the effect of "Can edits of this editor which are solely engvar- or engvar-like changes be reverted on sight"? This is much more effective, and although it would certainly waste time, it would be way less time than the scores of discussions... Or should I just be bold like the pertinent editor? NotReallySoroka (talk) 05:01, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You could probably guess whom the editor is, but I still don't want to be the first to name names. NotReallySoroka (talk) 05:03, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
NotReallySoroka, if you know for certain, and could prove on request, that the edits are made by a banned user, reversion of their edits is endorsed by WP:BANREVERT and exempt from the three-revert rule. Edit warring to revert style changes is probably unwise, and reporting the user is likely to be about as fast and less disruptive. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 05:55, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Firefangledfeathers: Said t-banned and permanently blocked (sorry, my mistake) user did not really evade their sanction. Instead, they made the style changes when they were still free. NotReallySoroka (talk) 08:32, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry I misunderstood! I'm not sure what the best venue for such a discussion would be, but if the editor focused on a particular topic area, a WikiProject talk page might get the most input from interested editors. People born in Goa prior to statehood in 1987[edit]

I had some random thoughts about the possible birthplace issues with people born before 1987. If we look at the history of the Indian state, Goa was an union territory before attaining statehood in 1987. I had some questions regarding this;

 • Are people born between 1961 & 1987 who are notable and have Wikipedia articles birth places change to Goa, Daman and Diu instead of simply Goa? Since Goa was clubbed together with Daman and Diu to form an union territory.
 • Should articles of subjects born and died prior to 1947 in Portuguese India, consider Indian or Luso-Indian? Or should we simply avoid it? Since India at that time was under the British rule.

✠ Rejoy2003 ✠ (contact) 07:40, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I found no indication in the MOS. I would say to avoid nationality entirely, following the examples of our articles Muhammad Ali Jinnah or Dayanand Bandodkar ("founder of Pakistan"/"Chief Minister of Goa" instead of "was a Pakistani/Gaon politician"). Of course, that may not always be possible, but a specific example might help to give a better answer. Question about death places[edit]

What should we list on death places, neighborhood or city? I'm asking this because users keep listing Pelé's place of death as Morumbi, a neighborhood, when in reality per Brazilian press standards, deaths are listed by city and state, so his death place should be listed as São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil, more accurately: São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

Neighborhoods in Brazil hold no administrative or legal power over its areas or inhabitants, in reality they don't actually exist, and are mere popular conventions to deliver mails, with lines between neighborhoods being blurred sometimes. Bastewasket (talk) 12:25, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

 • MOS:BIRTHPLACE is silent on the subject, it only says: Birth and death places, if known, should be mentioned in the body of the article, and can appear in the lead if relevant to notability, but not in the opening brackets alongside the birth and death dates. I would say it is a matter for local consensus. TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 12:50, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Available Information[edit]

I have been using Wikipedia for several years, and I have donated. I use the service primarily to locate info on TV programs, specifically a list of episodes. Please re-emphasize and update this info more often. IP editor. It is no use coming onto this forum and talking about what "Wikipedia" needs to prioritize. Wikipedia is written by thousands of volunteers who individually undertake projects that they choose to undertake. The articles you're reading, and wish Wikipedia would improve, likely have Talk pages. Those Talk pages will often say that the article is of interest to this or that Project in Wikipedia. If you go to one of those projects and say that you think this or that page should be changed in this or that way, you MIGHT get results. But there's still no guarantee; if nobody reading your suggestion chooses to take it on, nothing will happen. Uporządnicki (talk) 14:11, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Newspaper clippings images as references[edit]

I am trying to write an article about a notable Australian fashion designer, but most of the references mentioning her name are newspaper clippings in the form of images. And the problem is that these are no longer in any online archives as most of them were been published before 2009. What's the solution? How can I use these images to prove an entry for the fashion label is needed and how to reference to these images? Hamidvs (talk) 21:17, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]Reply[reply]

Hello, Hamidvs. There is no requirement that reliable sources be available online, and the image you describe would likely be copyright violations if posted online. Make sure that any references to newspaper articles include the article title, the author(s) (if known), the name of the newspaper, the publication date, the page number and the city (if not part of the newspaper name. Cullen328 (talk) 22:29, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Hamidvs, per WP:OFFLINE, there is no absolute requirement that a citation must have a weblink, though it's a practical thing to have when available. You can cite books, old newspapers etc that are not online if they are WP:RS. Use something like Template:Cite news, and fill it with the info you have: publisher ("work"), title of article, author, date of publication are the important ones. Page number if you have it. Check Skeeter Reece for some examples in the ref-section. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:46, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Archiving talk page by moving it[edit]

I wasn't sure where to ask, and I couldn't find any information about this when searching. Today I happened upon two cases of users moving their own user talk pages as a manner to archive them (eg: moving User talk:Isabelle Belato to User talk:Isabelle Belato/Archive X). While I'm sure this is very practical, it also moves the page's history, making it much harder to search through it as the history begins to get split among several archives. I was wondering if this is an acceptable procedure or if it's discouraged. Isabelle Belato 🏳‍🌈 22:49, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Champions Chess Tour: Should this be a disambiguation page, set index article, or article (stub)?[edit]

Hello. A week ago I created Champions Chess Tour, largely just as a way to point people to the two associated articles (Champions Chess Tour 2021 or Champions Chess Tour 2022) if they search/link to it. I more or less copied the format of Nord Stream, and so added the set index article tag, though I'm not sure if this was correct (Onel5969 later added a notability tag to the page). Is it fine as it was? Should I remove the one line of sourced text and call it a DAB page? Should it have a stub tag instead of a set index tag and be formatted as an actual article? Thanks. Endwise (talk) 23:36, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As it's a small article with not much information yet, it could be considered as a stub until more content is added at a subsequent time.StarryNightSky11  00:30, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's not the question I asked. Endwise (talk) 00:39, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Endwise: Two editions of the same event is not a set index or disambiguation. If it's short then it's a stub. If you are willing to spend a little more time then you can copy some lines and references from each article, maybe making a brief section for each season with a main link. Why does Wikipedia use present tense to describe events that occurred in the past? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2405:9800:B513:6621:9D9:6D8D:E93F:4311 (talk) 04:25, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can you give an example? —C.Fred (talk) 04:26, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The guideline for tense is at MOS:TENSE. We use present tense in many cases, including for books, TV shows, movies, etc. even if those works were produced in the past and are no longer produced, since they still exist. But we should use past tense for events in the past. If you see articles using present tense to describe past events, please provide examples. CodeTalker (talk) 05:16, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
We have six million articles. Always say where you saw something. We have no way of telling why an unindentified page does something or whether it should change. PrimeHunter (talk) 05:21, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
IP editor. The historical present may even be the accepted way to describe events from the past. It all depends on context, so as already suggested you need to give an example of where you think an article has this wrong. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:24, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Airborne84: Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Trademarks#General rules says:
 • Avoid using special characters that are not pronounced, are included purely for decoration, or simply substitute for English words or letters (e.g., "♥" used for "love", "!" used for "i") or for normal punctuation, unless a significant majority of reliable sources that are independent of the subject consistently include the special character in the subject's name.
I couldn't find any source which mentions the game under any name so it must have low notability. Do you have a link to a place showing how the star looks? "Advanced" and "Symbols" above the edit area has two stars ☆★. We use Unicode which has around 150,000 characters including many stars. Star (glyph) shows many but some may be uncommon with limited browser support. You can copy-paste symbols. If you know a Unicode code point like U+2605 then you can also write ★ to produce ★.
