Valerie of Painting Etcetera is very knowledgeable about materials, wood types, stains, and paints, and has done a beautiful job restoring the siding. Her crew is very professional and courteous. Their work is meticulous - the house looks wonderful. I think the paints and stains will last a lot longer this time, too

Robert Jasso Painting

We had a new, high-quality redwood fence installed in our back yard and decided we wanted it stained versus being left as redwood. The goal was to have it blend more into the surroundings and help enlarge the feeling our small city yard. Looking through Angie’s List and other online services sites we narrowed down our choices to a few contractors. After meeting with Robert, understanding his appreciation for detail and his knowledge we chose him for staining our fence. Instead of blindly doing whatever we said, Robert explained the tradeoffs of our options and we mutually worked together on the best option. As a result we have a nicely Deep Forest Green fence that makes our backyard look wonderful! Further he made the right choices of materials for our deck and metal spindles while others would have not have paid attention to that detail and used the same stain. Robert and his team paid attention to our neighbor’s constraints, were quiet and communicated promptly by phone & email. Also, Robert was nice enough to do some touch-up work in the front of the house for no extra charge. We are looking forward to working with Robert again in the future

CUSTOM PAINTING

We were disappointed for a couple reasons: * The paint on the concrete began to peel almost immediately. * The put a paint, not stain on the redwood deck, which peeled excessively after first rains and now prevents absorption of stain; adds to future maintenance costs. We were very explicit about stain-only. * The paint on doors near the weather stripping is peeling Overall, we feel that the quality of the materials used was poor. The work was covered under warranty, and they did return the next season and try again. The decking is a lost cause now, I guess -- all the paint is again peeling after 1 season

Process was very smooth. Ryan was (and is) a pleasure to work with. Very upfront with all relevant details. Communicated clearly throughout the entire process. His team is very professional and helpful. There were a few minor touch ups and fixes were applied with no issue. Ryan is someone who stands by the quality of his work. I would definitely work with him again

We could not be happier with the House Doctor! We had our exterior painted, two wood decks, a shed, and they stained our fence. Kelly was very responsive, and on top of the process. He came out every day to check on how the work was going, and to make sure we were good with what was going on. He provided great service. His crew was also amazing! Always on time, and asked questions when needed (moving yard furniture, personal preference, etc..). They paid close attention to detail, and the end results were perfect. I will definitely hire them again

If there was a zero rating this would be it. I don't like reviewing companies in general but I cannot in good conscious let this go un-noticed to anyone that would like to have their home painted or stained. This company is terrible for so many reasons it's hard to tabulate. I hired Alex and Viv to paint my home and stain my decks. What started as a reasonable quote became the worst case of scope creep I've encountered ever. The entire job went from 12,500 to 22,000 (paint included) - All of which has been paid to date. Throughout most of the project, Alex and Viv were non-existent site/project managers and only showed up when they wanted to be paid. If there were issues (most of the time) - Alex and Viv would play good cop/bad cop with Viv playing the part of bad cop/bulldog while attempting to address consistent issues she would always having some excuse as to why something was wrong with the work and it would cost extra to fix the issues. Her demeanor toward me/homeowner/customer was terrible and frankly abusive. From day one it was a fiasco. I left to go on my regular walk/hike early in the morning and came home to find Alex's crew (Jose and Julio) had arrived, unloaded, and should have been setting up to start power washing - but NO - I come home to find Jose standing on top of the work van power washing the work truck in my driveway. I had a beautifully stained front door/entrance to my home that was aging and needed a lift - they stripped the door and re-stained it - the results were abominable - it's in describable how bad it turned out. I asked Alex to strip the door again and he wanted to charge for the extra work. They did stripe the door, but I elected to not have them re-stain because frankly these two clowns have no idea how to apply stain and Alex and Viv actually pressed that the door looked terrific! Needless to say the decks turned out the same and they stained the decks the wrong color! The crew were consistently taking days off from the job, worked slow, and took long lunch (sometimes longer than an hour), and played loud music throughout the day without even checking to see if it was okay. For the work and some of the issues : They over sprayed onto light fixtures, sliding screen doors, didn't actually paint/stain what was agreed upon, and now the paint on the house is bubbling in areas. I have contacted Alex on a number of occasions only to be scuttled with him mentioning excuse after excuse he has something else to do and will get back to me. In our last contact and what is likely a need for some kind of income, he expects to be paid cash to fix the things that remain damaged or that have issues AND wants to be paid cash upfront before any work starts. In the end, Alex and Viv are operating a sham business, using cash paid unbonded/uninsured labor that is not qualified to perform paint/stain work. Unprofessionalism doesn't even come close to describing their attitudes and work. Here's a short list of the issues for easy reference : 1) Power washing work van in the driveway 2) Do NOT know how to paint/stain 3) PAINT is BUBBLING in areas - wants to be paid CASH UPFRONT to fix it and is attempting to reduce his repair work with an unacceptable solution 4) Created DAMAGE on the house and expects to be paid for the repair work (sliding screens damaged, light fixtures were stained) 5) Parts of the job were NOT COMPLETED 6) Deck prep was TERRIBLE - hence just one aspect of ISSUES with the application results 7) WRONG stain color 8) Rolled stain or sprayed it with a sprayer (a huge NO-NO) and did not go back over the applied stain with rags to properly apply the stain as was agreed upon 9) DAMAGED deck post (ALEX actually did the DAMAGE - it's almost as if he did it on purpose because when he noticed the damage he continued doing more DAMAGE!!) 10) RUDE and UNACCEPTABLE TREATMENT of a client 11) Will NOT repair damage 12) UNBONDED/UNINSURED cash paid workers 13) EXPECTS to be PAID CASH UPFRONT for the repairs Alex and his crew created Net net, these guys should not be running a paint/stain business and should be SHUT DOWN immediately. I have asked repeatedly for an acceptable resolution and have been put out and blown off. If you would like to pay a couple lazy scam artists to make your home look worse than it was before they started - you should contact Alex and Viv Sharp at A&V Painting contract lic #802201. How this guy actually has a license from the State of California is unbelievable. I would suggest to NOT call these guys for anything let alone what they profess as their business. A note with regard to these other so called 5 start ratings - Alex and Viv had to have paid for these ratings. With my experience, It's impossible to fathom actually and certainly not beneath them to do

We hired Dvpro Painting to paint our house and stain the deck. The work was excellent and our home looks fantastic. During the caulking and prep work, several rotten boards were discovered and for a reasonable price, they were replaced. The new carpentry looks great. I highly recommend Dan at Dvpro Painting

Kelly was very responsive and accommodated our request for a certain type of paint. We ended up not using that paint, and went with his expert recommendation. He provided a quote immediately and had a large crew that could start the next week (between rain storms and work on our landscaping). The paint was a perfect color match to the scheme we used before. The team was efficient, thorough and friendly. They took our old extra paint away for recycling. Our house and fence look beautiful again

Patrick was very patient and provided quick responses to ALL my questions. I had many since this was the first time for us to paint/stain the exterior of our house. He provided great suggestions for paint/stain color and explained the process /steps that would be taken to complete the project. Because the exterior of my house is wood shingles, it was a more complicated process to pressure wash and treat the wood before staining and painting. Patrick's team was very professional, courteous and did outstanding work. They completed the work in the estimated time and cleaned up very well when they were finished. I would definitely hire them again

He was so-so. They did the work. They were on time, they were clean. It looked decent. We had previously hired somebody and they dropped paint all over the concrete. The House Doctor was pretty neat and tidy, so he didn’t get paint where he shouldn’t have gotten it; and they were fast. They could have probably used a better-quality paint. They were supposed to stain the deck and a year later it looked like it needed to be stained again, it wasn’t very good. The price is probably why I picked them. I would rather use this other company. I found another painter

THE PAINTERS DID A REALLY GOOD JOB PAINTING OUR HOUSE AND STAINING OUR FENCE. AFTER THEY PAINTED THE SHUTTERS, I DECIDED I WANTED TO CHANGE THE COLOR OF PAINT ON THE SHUTTERS, THEY WERE COMPLETELY ACCOMMODATING AND REPAINTED THE SHUTTERS IN THE NEW COLOR RIGHT AWAY. THE QUALITY OF THEIR WORK WAS EXCELLENT. AFTER THEY WERE COMPLETELY FINISHED WITH THE JOB, WE WERE VERY SATISFIED WITH THE END PRODUCT

If you're seeing this because you came to this page for 5 star reviews, please read this one. Please. Please read it. Even if you still work with him. We effectively are one of the few large-scale up-to-date reviews and this guy really raked us over the coals for money in an unreal. I would also encourage you, as Faye P. said, to ask for his business license. They don't know colors. They don't act ethically. Josue is frankly rude and condescending. I preface this by writing that the job was eventually finished, and it was finished to a standard I'd give about a C-. Maybe. The professionalism, reliability, general conduct and utterly crass money-grabbing nature of Josue is something that deserves nothing but sheer disgust. I have never in my life ever had to contact my attorney involved with a contractor. Congrats Josue! Bet you weren't expecting that one! We hired Josue to paint the exterior of our house, the interior living room of our house and stain our fence and our deck. Josue sent us an email with a quote, and they began. It was $9850 for the whole time. Very quickly we saw that the paint they'd chosen for the green, which they pushed my wife to take versus go with her choice, was a sickly mint. I should note that they had already been painting the living room at this time as well. We very nicely asked Josue if we could change the colour and in return, Josue said two things: 1) That'll be $2800. 2) When she said it was ludicrous, he got flustered, said "well we have to make a decision in the next 20 minutes." It was 7:30am. I'd been working a long night. She pleaded - "can we have an hour?" To quote his reprehensible answer, he said "wife's name, the world doesn't revolve around you." He then immediately halted work on the interior painting. This is in no way reasonable, nor fair, nor related to the exterior painting, but he sure did it. I said $1500, he said $2000, and out of sheer exhaustion I excepted what I see as borderline extortion. He even had the gall to say, when I asked for a rundown of his expenses, "Well, you run a business, do YOUR clients ask for a run down of expenses?" I told him - yes, I do. He went quiet. I should add Josue's tone on the phone with my wife was immensely different to his tone to me in person. When he spoke on the phone - we had him on speaker - to my wife, he was condescending, rude, talked over her. In person he was quiet, and though he did try and talk over me, well, anyone who knows me well knows that doesn't tend to go well for anyone. The only reason we didn't kick him and his team out was because they were working. Still. And had half-finished the front room. Don't worry, we'll get there. Oh, and I should add Josue sure loved reminding us that he "lost money" on the front room. Well he sure made money on the outside of the house to me. So, here we are, $2000 more on top of the job, and they paint the house. They paint it. All of it. We take a look around and realize that they clearly didn't clean the property (please do check out our photos) - you know how we know that? Well, they painted over a spiderweb. And a spider. That's pretty obvious that they didn't clean it properly. Then the next day, it peeled - and they did a sloppy job painting over it, as you can see from our other photo. They eventually got those were cleaned and corrected, but the house was still not cleaned properly initially. Remember the interior job? Well, we have an number of stair rails. I've included a picture of the job they did when painting them. You'll see all of them are painted black, apart from one that's left right. We told this to Josue. His first defense was that the rail was not part of the room (as it was to the left of a walkway to the garage). By that logic, surely the left rail of that staircase would also be right? His response to this was - pretty grumpily - to say that it was in the contract. This is the equivalent of a gameshow buzzer for me, because there's one person I know who loves looking at contracts - my attorney! So I decided as Josue wanted to talk about contracts, my attorney would love to talk about contracts with him. Turns out the moment I did that over email Josue suddenly decided that in fact the stair rail - and don't worry I've included pictures - was in fact part of the room. Note, his cohort had agreed to paint them out of some sort of sympathy or possibly some other reason I'm not sure of. It's irrelevant. They did it. Then, finally, there's the fence. We canceled this part. And the deck. Why? Because we asked for semi-transparent. The stain (see the photo!) came out looking like...well, paint. You tell me if that looks transparent. It doesn't. We argued with them, they yelled to check the paint can, and we pointed to the many, many pieces of spare wood (we're having work done) they could have tested it on. If you want an expensive job done in a painful and mediocre manner, you know who to call

However, we may have pros in another category that can help with your project.
Painting the exterior of a home comes down to proper preparation.
The exterior surface may first need to be cleaned, washed and scraped before the actual painting can begin. All these steps come at their own cost, so it helps to know what level of preparation is needed. Any residential painting project typically involves the following factors:
Surface preparation
Most surfaces are prepared for painting by power washing, scraping, and leveling the surface.
Power washing removes stubborn stains and debris, while scraping is used to remove old paint from the surface. Finally, the surface is leveled before a fresh coat of paint can be applied.
Color choice
The paint color will also determine how the job is carried out. Lighter colors require a more detailed painting process in order to appear even and clean.
Scope of the project
For larger homes, the painting project will require more preparation and cost more than smaller homes. The design of a home may also influence the project, as homes that have a simpler outdoor design are easier to paint.
How much does a home painter cost?
Most home painting costs average $3700 to paint the exterior.
Multi-story homes may cost more to paint. Because of the level of preparation required, older homes with worn out exteriors will often cost more to paint than newer homes that have undergone less wear and tear.
How to get the best contractor for the job
Giving a home a fresh coat of paint requires careful planning and implementation. It's important to work with a certified, licensed and experienced painter in order to give your property a fresh, new look at a competitive cost. Insurance is also important as it protects your home insurance against any unforeseen damages.
