Benefits
Manage your backups and restores all in one place
Protect a broad spectrum of workloads and manage them from a central dashboard. Serve critical use cases such as recovery from data corruption, data loss, ransomware recovery, or database cloning for test/dev.
Eliminate downtime with on-demand, instant recovery
Rely on application-consistent, incremental-forever backups. This service offers low Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO). Restore from backups quickly to resume business operations.
Reduce space required for storing backups
Avoid storing duplicate data unnecessarily with our space-efficient, "incremental-forever" approach. After initial backup we only store incremental changes, which saves you costs and accelerates restore time.
Key features
Key features
“Incremental-forever” backups
Efficient, incremental-forever backup leveraging changed-block tracking significantly reduces the time it takes to back up, minimizes impact on production servers, and optimizes bandwidth and storage utilization for low RPO and costs.
Instant mount and recovery
Instantly mount and access VMware Engine VMs and databases from backups stored in Cloud Storage for low RTO. No need to first move backup data to warm storage to access it.
Application-consistent database backups
Ensures databases are quiesced before data capture for application-consistent backups that can be recovered quickly. Transaction logs are backed up as well, as frequently as every 15 minutes, enabling recovery to any point in time.
Reduced operational burden
Reduces storage requirements for Compute Engine and VMware Engine VMs since selective disks can be excluded from backup.
Broad database support
Application-aware backup and recovery for databases, such as IBM Db2, Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB, MySQL, Oracle, SAP ASE, SAP HANA, SAP IQ, SAP MaxDB, and PostgreSQL.

Use cases
Use cases
Accelerate app development and delivery velocity and reduce operational costs by using Backup and DR Service to create self-service, automated copies of production DBs for integration tests (in minutes). This allows your test/dev process to automatically provision a point-in-time, fully readable/writable copy of your production database, run an integration test with your changes, and throw away this database clone when it’s no longer useful.
Backup and DR service enables users to rapidly identify the appropriate backup for use in recovery. Mount multiple point-in-time backups of databases and applications simultaneously to test multiple machines. Your security tools can then leverage each mount and be used to identify ransomware infections with high performance. This parallel approach to analysis can significantly reduce the time to identify the best backup for recovery.
All features
Additional features
Centralized management | Centralized management of backups for various Google Cloud and hybrid workloads. |
Plan-driven data management with automated retention | Create backup plans that are powered by a sophisticated and powerful scheduling engine. Preconfigure, set, and forget your intraday, daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly backups. Specify backup locations and retention periods. Configure workload specific options and choose between app-consistent and crash-consistent backups. |
Cross-region backups | You have complete control over your backup data. Store your backups in a multi-region or single region/location to meet disaster recovery and compliance needs. |
Flexible backup storage options | Supports Persistent Disk and Cloud Storage classes for backups thus giving you the control knob to switch between backup performance and backup to meet your varying needs. |
Instant data access on-premises or in cloud | Minimize recovery time objective (RTO) by recovering VMs and databases in minutes regardless of the workload size and environment (in Google Cloud or on-premises). |
Cross project recoveries | Recover workloads to different projects—allows for disaster recovery and migrating workloads to different projects. |
Multi-region disaster recovery | Enable disaster recovery in a single Google Cloud region or across regions with the ability to instantly access hundreds of datasets in parallel. Perform automated bulk recoveries of protected workloads to alternate locations, enabling proactive DR testing with repeatable results. |
Virtual clones for test data management and ransomware recovery | Repurpose your backups to create virtual clones of your databases for test/dev/analytics purposes or access datasets in parallel to identify pristine copy to recover from a ransomware attack. |
Data encryption in transit and at rest | Ensure that data is safely secured in block and object storage to meet business and regulatory requirements. |
