Let's talk about what it's like to contribute to WordPress outside of the project itself. I've been doing it out of my own pocket for over a decade and it's been a struggle. It's made me think a lot about open source sustainability in WordPress. So here's a 🧵 and a warning 🤣

For me who loves trains 🤤
Quote Tweet
This is the longest (theoretical) single uninterrupted train journey possible on Earth. Starting from the Portuguese coast, one can travel by train not just into China but all the way to southern Vietnam, a distance of 17,000 km (10,566 mi) [read HERE: ow.ly/Nmnx50xqY28]

Really need to find a way to get to this 🥹

In the last decade: — I never pulled an all-nighter — I never work weekends — Most weeks, I work <= 40 hours — I did 40 vacation days per year Still my company is doing great, empowering millions. You don’t need to burn your life away to be a founder or to create great things. twitter.com/nikitabier/sta…

The idea is to just find ways to make it part of your operating cost. If you need to financial reason for it, just view it as an insurance policy. How much productivity loss would you have if stopped working on xdebug? Probably more than sending him some $$$ each month!

Every business owner should look at how to contribute more to open source. I think % of revenue makes sense for most businesses because it's simple. Thats said, 5% of revenue makes little sense if you make $100M (that's $5M 🤣) as there are diminishing returns to it.

I'm still not sure what my next contribution will be. But I think I will try to favour projects that cannot sustain themselves with some sort of hosting play like WordPress, Laravel, etc. Maybe xdebug? I'll have time to think about it. My 40th subscriber is far still 🥲🤣

I chose PHP as Ymir's first contribution because it's wild that it's the language that underpins so much of the web and yet has the least support. Every company using PHP should be sending them some money. Even if it's just as an insurance policy!

PHP underpins much of the web but has the least funding of any of today’s popular programming languages. This needs to change. Companies that use PHP need to contribute. twitter.com/MrDanack/statu…

Because there's no program like Stripe Climate, I decided to donate every 20th subscription to an open source project or other initiative. I'm not sure how it'll work when Ymir's income becomes more diverse. But I figure it's a good start considering I still can't pay myself lol

When I wrote my thread on open source sustainability, I said that companies should do more. I always had Ymir in mind as well. Ymir has to help support open source and other initiatives.

One thing I always wanted to do with is to use it as a vehicle to support various causes. Almost from the start, I started donating part of every subscription fee to Stripe Climate. I started with 2% and then bumped it up to 5%. But that was also step one.
