In 2022, Kaspersky’s detection systems discovered on average 400,000 malicious files distributed every day, indicating a 5% growth compared to 2021. The number of certain types of threats also escalated: for example, Kaspersky experts discovered the 181% increase in the proportion of ransomware detected daily. Kaspersky researchers reported the number of attacks via Banking Trojans stealing payment data, doubled in 2022 compared with 2021, reaching almost 20 million attacks. This year, in addition to this active campaign of banking credentials theft, cybercriminals did not stand still and developed new scam schemes. On Black Friday in particular, fraudsters used a new type of phishing scheme for the first time exploiting Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services. In Q3 2022, Kaspersky researchers saw a sharp increase in crypto miner variants – an overall growth of over 230% compared to the same period last year. The number is three times more than in the third quarter of 2021 and now exceeds 150,000. Remaining hidden for months, cybercriminals use the processing power of the victim’s computer to mine cryptocurrency, with an income reaching up to $40.500 (2 BTC) per month. Monero (XMR) is the most popular cryptocurrency for malicious mining.
