In October, unemployment rates were higher in 24 states, lower in 1 state, and stable in 25 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 7 states and was essentially unchanged in 43 states and the District.

Jobless rates were lower in October than a year earlier in 264 of the 389 metropolitan areas, higher in 94, and unchanged in 31. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 95 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 294.

Annual average unemployment rates decreased in 49 states and the District of Columbia in 2021,
while the rate was little changed in 1 state. Employment-population ratios increased in 38
states and the District, decreased in 1 state, and were little changed in 11 states.
