3/4 The #DigitalServicesAct and #DigitalMarketsAct have taken baby steps towards limiting #surveillance ads online. The law however leaves huge loopholes for ads to micro-target us across the internet based on intimate, personal information extracted from our digital lives.

2/4 #AdTech has built the largest system of commercial #surveillance humankind has ever seen. That's why

is pushing for significant reform of EU laws to ban surveillance #advertising online. Online ads don’t need to violate our most basic rights to reach their audience.

According to the Global Disinformation Index, at least $235 million in revenue is generated annually from ads which run on extremist and disinformation websites. Some of the online advertisers show advertising to people that have been categorised as survivors of incest, rape and sexual abuse, people with mental health issues, impotence or infertility.

3/8 This pushed Janet into debt, who later lost her job and eventually fell into depression, losing custody of her 13-year-old son. ⚖️Who decided Janet's fate? The faulty System Risk Indicator (SyRI) algorithm. The Dutch tax authority used this infamous algorithm.

2/8 🇳🇱 Janet Ramesar is a Dutch woman who lived with her son in The Hague. In 2015, Janet was put under investigation for social benefits fraud & her allowance was suddenly stopped. Despite her cooperation, she was ordered to pay back €40 000.
