The start of a new year marks a good time to look back and reflect. Now that 2017 is over with let's take a moment to see what’s been going on at itch.io for the past year. In addition to highlighting some of our accomplishments, I’d also like to show off some of our creators and their projects that stood out. Enjoy!
Creators on itch.io have been hard at work, in 2017 we saw:
In order to roll in the new year, we've rolled out a new homepage! We'll probably have more info later, but for now enjoy the update.
In 2017 the itch.io website saw 3,942 commits with 1436 files changed, 134322 insertions(+), 26341 deletions(-)
. As of today, the itch.io website contains 262,711 lines of code (not including third party libraries).
We’ve released dozens of incremental features, but here are some of the highlights from the past year:
With 72 posts in the itch.io digest blog it might be a bit overwhelming to go through them all. Here are our top 5 editorial posts by views:
And here are the top 5 interviews:
In 2017 we’ve had a focus on curation and promotion to help developers get more attention on their projects.
We launched itch.io Selects, a regular curated bundle of games, as a way to highlight some of our favorites combined with a nice discount. Look forward to more bundles in 2018.
We’ve been keen on site-wide promotions like the itch.io Summer sales, Halloween sales, and Winter Sales. In 2018 we hope to have bigger and more interesting events!
Now lets take a look at some of the top games from 2017. I tried to pull lists that were interesting, if you have any ideas for other lists then leave a comment below.
The games that were most downloaded, purchased, viewed, and played in 2017
The games that received the most number of purchases
All payments on itch.io are pay-what-you-want above the minimum. Here are the games with supportive fans that received the highest average amount above their minimum price. (The list is filtered to games that got at least 100 purchases)
Just because your game is free doesn’t mean you can receive tips. Here are free games created for jams in 2017 with the most tips.
Tags are developers can free-form classify their games. Here are the top tags used in 2017:
Congratulations to everyone who made it on these lists, and thank you to everyone who has used itch.io in 2017. We look forward to what 2018 brings. Thanks for reading.

nice job
Itch.io we want to thank you for the great distribution platform. In some ways, far more intuitive and progressive than other ones! ;)
Honor to be 9th most purchased paid game!
Thank you for making and maintaining this platform for people to share their work in video games without a whole bunch of money and without a conventionally "completed" product. You're doing important work!
Thanks for all you do for the indie game dev community! Looking forward to 2018 :)
Thanks dirt girl
same
Aww, didn't know about the Itchio Selects Bundle until today. The first one looks solid.
Love the new home page! Keep up the great work!
Thanks Leaf (and everyone else in the itch.io community) to allow uus making our first step on the market!
The title/link for Handväska! (4th most tipped jam game) is missing.
Thanks! Not sure how that happened but it's fixed now.
I'm happy to have my first commercial game (Neofeud) published on Itch.io first! Thanks Itch, and best wishes for the site in 2018!
This is a nice list to look up some games, but too boring to become a stock market calculation, not really indie stuff or intuitive review.
Honestly, I don't really feel so much different of new homepage, I prefer the front page color as dark, it is more comfortable in the old time.
And you can check some developers seeing itch.io as the beta testers only but not so willing to sell here for the full release, yes, Aven Colony is currently unavailable because they are already going to Steam.

Also I have said that the distributor's problem which would be a risk for individual developer and players.

In last year, I also found out some problem when we support the games.

Anyway, I still like itch.io a lot, but I really think there are much more things itch.io can do better.
I gotta say the new start page is missing a little color...
We've since made a few more changes, feel fee to check it out again. There's also a dark mode you can enable from your account settings if you liked the older dark version
The distinct itch.io peach color at the top was missing when not logged in and that made the start page feel a little cold. But now it's back and I feel warm and cosy again. Thanks!
Excellent post! :)
Wow! So fascinating to see all these numbers and stats together in one place. I'm extremely happy to be a part of this thriving and diverse community, and to see it continue to inspire and help people fulfill their creativity. Can't wait to see what itch.io brings in 2018. Happy new year!
