At least seven publishers turned down Richard Adams' manuscript, about a small group of rabbits, before Rex Collings Ltd. finally agreed to print 2,500 copies of the novel, which—renamed WATERSHIP DOWN—hit U.K. bookshop shelves fifty years ago today.

Sad news. Food writer Julie Powell has died at just 49. She famously blogged about her attempts to cook all 524 recipes from Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. This book followed and then a Meryl Streep film. Julie showed the world that French cooking isn't easy.
