Roger was very professional and we are very happy with his work. We will use him again. He made sure (unlike a carpenter we had in the past) that the right building material was used. I even recommended him to my daughter!

The guys from Carpentry Plus got the job done. They did a job on a lot of people would. They seem their price is very high and are poor on communication. They would do any job they could do.

He has had a complication with knee surgery and so the last I heard was he was going to start doing customer carpentry. I thought that the price was extremely reasonable and he gave me a lot of tips as well about where I could go to get better pricing for the kitchen cabinets. I trust him and his associate to the point that I had to go out for an emergency. I left them here in house doing the work. He is an artist as well as an technician.

All the work was performed in a professional and competent manner. Mr. Hoffman arrived when he said he would (the first available nice day for the outside work), completed the outside work on the first day, and he completed the inside work on the second day. I cannot grade the cost of the work, because I did not seek other bids. The cost seemed okay to me, I wanted to get the work done as soon as possible, and Mr. Hoffman was readily available to do the work.

Description of Work
All debris removed. Painting not included in work. Remove and replace up to 8' soffit $325.00. Clean gutters, downspouts, anchor gutters using new anchors as required, install gutter guards rear of house $480.00. Adjust three by-pass closet doors to opening, trim, and install floor guides $150.00. Install new interior bedroom entry door $245.00. Remove existing door stops for 11 other interior doors, adjust to avoid sticking doors, and re-install door stops $275.00; these doors started sticking and paint was coming off after a different contractor painted the doors a year ago. That different contractor failed to return to trim and install anchors for the by-pass closet doors after new, thicker carpeting was installed. My house is 30 years old. Roger Hoffman, dba Carpentry Plus, said that the door stops needed adjustment to avoid sticking doors. He also advised that if he had not trimmed the bottom of the by-pass closet doors, the doors would have worn the carpet (the doors slide back and forth).

A few weeks ago I attempted to scrape and repaint several areas of exterior wood trim. In a few spots the wood disintegrated beneath my scrapper - it had been left unprotected too long. I found Roger through Angie’s List and called for a quote. Roger came out within a few days to inspect and provided a written quote two days after that. I thought the price sounded reasonable given the amount of work (I did not seek any other quotes) and signed off on the estimate. Roger scheduled the service shortly thereafter, but was delayed by several days of rain. He was able to perform the work on the next dry day. I am very impressed by his work – the trim was now put in the correct way (it was a screwy DIY job before) and he made some small angled cuts to dress everything up!

Description of Work
Replaced exterior wood trim around a window, sliding glass door, and exterior door (plus patching on the latter's doorjam) and replaced the wood panel underneath a bay window.

Work completed was high quality and done in a timely manner. Provides 1 year guarantee for work performed.

After I sent the check, I told him I was unable to reach him by phone. He replied to an email on 05/14/09 and I have not heard from him since. In his last email he said he had been having problems with his computer and he tried to contact me regarding the issues regarding proceeding with the project. He stated that after talking to the zoning and permit departments we were starting down an expensive road. He stated, that the project looked more time consuming and intracate than expected and he would have to withdraw. He stated that my deposit would be refunded within the next several days. Today is 06/09/09 and I still have not recieved the check and cannot get a hold of him. I requested that the refund and documentation of specified deductions be sent by Thursday 06/11/09 and I have not heard from him.

Description of Work
He met with us and determined that a permit would need to be obtained and approved for the deck repair project. He stated that the process was pretty easy, but could be time consuming. He stated that it would cost $500 to get started and get the permits and if I wanted to proceed, I should mail that down payment which I did.

Description of Work

Several weeks went by and Roger called to let me know he was going to brace the roof the next day. He did an excellent job and two days later the foundation people showed up and commented that he did a very good bracing job and there would be no damage to the roof once the foundation of the porch was raised. I met Roger down at the property and paid him for the work. His specialty he told me was trim work. He did what he said he would do when he said he would do it. He did a nice job and I would use him again.

Description of Work
I own a rental property in Clifton. The foundation under the front porch was shifting and I needed someone to brace the porch roof in preparation for the foundation work. It was a small job and I was afraid I would have trouble finding someone to do it. I called Roger and left a message. He promptly called me back. I described the work and he said he would go take a look at it. He called me a few days later and said it would be $275 to brace the porch. I also told him when the foundation people were coming and he said he would have it done the week before they were due in.

This company is outstanding, truly one of the best companies that has done work in our house. We highly recommend them to anyone, and we would definitely hire them again to do similar projects or much larger remodeling projects. They are highly professional, knowledgeable, reliable, and responsive. They provide well-written estimates, return calls promptly, and spend plenty of time assessing the project and explaining options to the homeowner. They use quality materials and take their time doing the work to make sure it is done right.

Description of Work
Installed a new handrail for safety around the stairwell of a loft. This involved removing the existing handrail, bolting new newel posts deeply and firmly into the floor, building and installing a new handrail, securing vertical bars for support, and cleaning up afterward.

Roger left me with a terrific first impression when he came to give an estimate. His estimate covered any and all cracks, not just the ones he noticed and documented during his initial visit. His attitude was, "As long as the bucket is out, I'll just patch anything I see." (Other estimates we received itemized every crack in every room, which we thought was a little too rigid!) We are very glad we chose him for the job. His great work reflects his many years' experience, and he was very thorough about cleaning up afterward. He did miss a few tiny cracks here and there, but nothing a new coat of paint won't cure. I had two small boys (preschool-age and infant) with me while he was here, so he was kind enough to finish his work in the bedrooms each day by 1:00 so I could put the boys down for naps. He did so gladly and without complaint. I would highly recommend Roger for this and any other type of repair/remodeling work.

Roger is a friendly, professional guy with nearly 30 years experience. When he came to give us an estimate, I was struck by his pleasant demeanor, his candor and his willingness to discuss multiple options for unusual projects. We were happy to award him the job, and he went about his work with gusto. He did a fantastic job, cleaned everything up very well, and worked around my schedule. He even had time to befriend my little boy and bring in the mail as he passed by the mailbox. I would recommend this guy in a heartbeat.

Description of Work
Roger mounted 1x4 pine boards to our ceiling where walls met the ceiling (the room is trapezoidal in shape; walls meet ceiling at approximately 45-degree angle) to create a tray ceiling effect. He then applied mud to blend the boards with the walls and readied everything for paint.

The work was completed in a timely, clean manner. Roger is not a painter, and I did go over some of his painting. I would call him to remind him of items I wanted more attention paid to, such as sanding the woodwork, plastering the corners of the walls. He is responsive. He did cut one shelf in half to make two shelves which was not in the contract. This was not an easy job, but he is not a methodical worker. In the end the cabinet met our requirements.

Description of Work
Roger dismantled an enclosed cabinet below bookshelves, removed it, cut it back by roughly 12 inches,(recessed) refinished the cabinet, shelves, painted, caulked the top and surrounding walls, added trim, molding where necessary. The shelves had sliding glides which needed a new size. They couldn't be found in the same quality as I originality had.

The overall quality of the carpentry work was very high. Roger's price was very reasonable compared to some other bids we received, although the deposit he required was somewhat higher than we are used to for this type of work. He started when he said he was start the work, showed up every day to work on it, and finished within 2 weeks. He also returned phone calls promptly. He maintained access to the front door during the entire job. There was one misunderstanding early on in the job regarding the floor decking material (we wanted full-length boards, but he started piecing the floor in from shorter pieces of stock), but Roger was very reasonable in redoing the work and coming to a compromise on the cost of the rework. The one point that I learned in the deal was to ensure all the details are spelled out in a future contract (good learning for any contractor).

Description of Work
Roger replaced the rotted decking on our 100 year old home's front porch with new tongue-and-groove flooring. He also replaced the wrought-iron railings and columns with new fiberglass columns and new redwood railings. The floor decking was primed all sides before installation (which we added to his original proposal for $500 extra), the railings and columns were not painted. He removed the old decking debris and left the railings and columns per our request.

It went beautifully; Roger had earlier noticed the builder did a substandard job on installing the casement around the opening so he was prepared to tackle that problem head-on. I'd had a problem with the garage entry steps since we moved in (they were wobbly and too short--I'd already tripped several times). I combined the ''new steps'' project with a threshold/door problem I encountered after I had some changes made to my security system. I knew that once Roger fixed that threshold, my system would work properly. And I was right.

Description of Work
Installing a set of French doors in my family room; repairing casement as prep for installation. Removed existing garage entry steps; built new single box step, approximately 3' x 3'; Removed interior casing/ exterior molding; removed garage entry door--lowered threshold as allowable; re-installed casing/molding; removed all debris from both projects.

The powder room in this house was a nightmare. Since it's only 33'' wide, the 9' ceiling gave it all the charm of an elevator shaft. Styled with a vanity as well, it was so cramped you practically had to step outside to turn around. Lowering the ceiling was one fix--the biggest one! And getting rid of that vanity and ridiculous fixtures one finds in a regular bathroom! Roger got that vanity out first thing and we immediately saw a difference in space. When the ceiling was dropped, it was the difference between night and day. It really turned into something gorgeous! NO MORE claustrophobia! :-)

Description of Work
Remove existing toilet, vanity, sink, towel-bar and tissue holder; complete pre-finished flooring where vanity was removed (provided by homeowner); frame new drop ceiling per requested height; install new exhaust fan per request; install new standard 1/2'' drywall on ceiling (smooth finish); patch/skim walls as necessary; remove debris

In order to sell previous property, I agreed to repaint the shutters on the front of the house; getting the ones off the second floor proved to be such a hassle that I called Roger Hoffman to do it; the ones on the ground floor, as well.

Description of Work
