He was on time, did good work. It took him quite a while for the grab bars in the kitchen. The things he did, he did well. He said he would build a concrete wheelchair ramp, but never came back and now he won't answer my calls.

Distinctive Design Remodeling

Distinctive Design Remodeling LLC has, at first glace, a very good reputation on both Angie's List and the Better Business Bureau of Lexington, KY, which is why I called them. They sent out Ray M., a salesman with quite the line. He arrived at approximately 4 pm, explained how DDR was the top rated remodeling company in the tri-state area on Consumer Reports, said they had an excellent rating with the BBB, and provided me a list of "references". He kept calling me "brother" and his pricing was, according to him, at a deep discount because I am disabled and a retired federal employee. He made vague descriptions of the addition with cathedral ceilings, a GE outdoor 25,000 btu heater/air conditioning unit, excellent sliding windows, French doors, and a five foot wheelchair ramp, and wrapped it up with the claim his profit would be only 10%, and "sign here". I would have to buy my own ceiling fan and flooring for some reason and have the flooring installed separately. I wondered why. I told him I wanted to wait until January 2014 to take the money out of my retirement account, and he said "brother", you can get an interest-free $40,000 loan through me and payment won't be due for 120 days! "Sign here". He then went on to say his deep, deep discount was because he currently has five other jobs in the Florence area, and all prices will increase Jan. 1, 2014 because of the cost of materials and new code requirements like 2x6's required, not 2x4's, and higher insulation values - all of which will add at least $10,000. "Sign here." So I signed. That night I realized by giving him my date of birth, social security number, and other personal information, he could apply for a loan "on my behalf", and I started to worry that I had not received any specifications, drawings, etc. Under KY law, you can void an agreement or contract within the first three days, so I called him to tell him not to do anything. He again pressed the hard sell. I said no, stop everything. I then wrote a letter to DDR informing them in writing I was terminating my sales agreement and nobody should use my personal information to borrow money, and they must destroy all my paperwork. I got a credit report alert that on Thursday, a credit report was requested by DDR and a bank. I called DDR and left a message with their answering service (during business hours). On Friday I spoke to Jon Penn, the owner. He said he'd read my notification, and he would not proceed. An hour later Ray calls with "great news". When I tell Ray I have terminated the agreement, he first lowers the cost so "I'm getting stuff for free!", and then he accused me of lying to him. I told him not to contact me anymore, and I hung up. I am not implying Ray or DDR were going to use my information to obtain a loan for $40,000 interest-free for six months (he changed it from 120 days to 6 months) to defraud me. But after seeing DDR has had 4 complaints with the BBB since 2/2012, and 3 in the past year, I grew suspicious. I had not received any details of the materials to be used other than the GE 25,000 btu heater/AC, which for a 16 x 14 sunroom is overkill. I had no idea how many windows or the size of the windows (I emailed asking, and never got a response). I had no clue of the quality of materials, and based on Angie's List reviewers, the quality of the workmanship is hit or miss, depending on who you get. I noticed in the BBB complaint that DDR was angry that the complainant filed the complaint after DDR paid a settlement, and some here in Angie's list remarked about sloppy work. Of the 39 reviews, none of the A+ reviews went into much detail, compared to the less than positive reviews, which provided a lot of detail. The experience taught me never, never sign anything or provide personal financial information before you get all the specifications, drawings, listing of materials and hardware, etc. Never be pressured by a salesman telling you he's taking a loss at this price or is able to offer such a deep discount because he has 5 other jobs in the immediate area right now and can save money grouping them together, and you must sign immediately or lose out on the massive discount. Other reviewers have written of the same claim. Buyer beware with DDR and other construction outfits; their pricing doesn't indicate good value, just alleged low pricing. Without specifications and a detailed cost breakdown ahead of time, how can you sign a sales contract knowing you are paying fair market rates for labor and materials? You can't

This project could not have gone better. The DRS team were professional and performed top quality work. As with all projects there were unexpected issues. They came up with great solutions at reasonable cost. They communicated well throughout the project. I would hire them again without hesitation.

This project went well from start to finish. Combs Builders was recommended to us by friends who had their home built by them. After discussing the project with Rob Combs, an estimate was promptly submitted and accepted by us. A start date was agreed to and that was when the project started. (On time - imagine that) The project was finished on time and on budget. This was one of those rare experiences when the results were better than anticipated. We couldn't be happier. We're now discussing a storage shed project with these folks

I would not refer Joe for any composite deck work. While he did claim to have worked with composite materials before, it became apparent early on that this was not the case. Joe and his partner used fascia screws in solid deck boards resulting in over $300 of wasted materials. Additionally, the cuts were poor and not square. He did not keep a clean workspace and left screws all around my deck and lawn. I had to let Joe go before completion of the project. While he did cover a portion of the materials damaged, hiring Joe will set my deck project back months

JM Decks & Fences

I do not recommend this business. The initial workmanship was very poor. Antonio had to essentially rebuild the deck AFTER I pointed out all of the workmanship issues. It was not an easy discussion. For some reason they applied a tinted sealant to the steps which was very tacky and the tackiness never went away. When I hired someone to stain the deck they were not able to apply stain over the sealant. I called Antonio and asked him to sand or replace the steps and he refused. He referred me to the contract which says nothing about applying sealant to the steps. He now will not answer my calls or text messages. I paid a premium for JM Decks & Fences because Antonio convinced me of the quality of his workmanship. That was a mistake. Now I have to replace the steps at an unexpected and additional cost so that I can stain them

Project delayed twice. Initial estimate of cost $ 2000 - $ 3000. Cost was $ 3, 500. On day of install, I was told to purchase 1600 sq ft of gravel for under deck – caused me to run to home depot and spend $ 150.00. I could have been informed of the gravel prior to contractor starting job. Overall, very good experience. The contractor is very thorough and makes sure job is executed per design. The contractor and crew very polite and cleaned up after each day's work. Would recommend this contractor

I couldn't be happier with my new deck and pergola. From the initial quote through project completion, Building Character was easy to work with and provided frequent, clear communication. They helped manage my budget by discussing options and trade offs. The crew was extremely organized, efficient, courteous, and professional, and they kept the job site very clean. They completed the job in just 3 days, with high quality and craftsmanship. Everyone was a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend Building Character for you deck project

Great company to do business with. This is second time I've worked with them. Took time to explain all of my options. Made clear recommendations. A few months after their second round of service with me, I had a concern. The owner came to my home within a day or two to discuss with me the situation, which turned out to have been more of an issue with the way a few of the pieces of decking were installed than with anything Deck and Fence Renewal Systems did. Nevertheless, he sent out a crew at no cost to go over some areas a second time and I had a chance to discuss with him how installation issue would affect future scheduled maintenance. Highly recommend them and plan to do business with them in future

Tim Cook comes across as a skilled carpenter, is very professional and super responsive. After our initial call, he came out to our house to see our backyard and what we were thinking. At the time, our plans were uncertain but he offered several ideas and presented us with a plan and several options, all very quickly and via email. We eventually hired Gayle Frazer (landscape architect) to help us design the entire backyard. Once we had a sketch, I forwarded it to Tim as he quickly requoted the job, again by email. We had 2 other quotes and Tim was the best. We didn't go with him in the end, only because we hired one person who could do our deck, landscaping and concrete removal all at the same time

Excellent work. Did exceptionally good job on preparation. Best quality of any painter we have ever hired. Night and day difference. This was the third time we have used his services. Stained areas of the decking the last painter didn't touch.

Joe and two assistants answered my urgent call to get a ramp installed at my home as soon as possible. Joe deserves every award he has received. He is not only a top-notch carpenter but also a very understanding and caring person. We'll always think of Joe first whenever we have any job that needs to be done at our house. The work began at 9:30 and was completed before noon. They had lots of work to accomplish in this short amount of time, and it was done professionally and well. Many, many thank you's to Joe for a fine job

Our new deck looks terrific! We had an old, elevated wooden deck that was likely over 20 years old. We solicited multiple quotes from various deck builders, but Building Character won our business because of their product offering, extensive planning and design service, their competitive pricing, and their personal touch. We had a fairly large deck that spanned the entire house and we wanted a new elevated deck of similar dimensions, using composite decking, metal railing, and a new frame. We are thrilled with the results! They just completed the work this week and the deck looks amazing. Tim and his crew were the friendliest guys and worked diligently, even in some harsh heat/humidity. The crew was very receptive to questions about what they were doing and sought our input if they needed to alter plans. If you want something a certain way, just let them know and they will work hard to make it how you like it. The owners, Jennifer and Jared were very responsive to all of our emails. We would highly recommend Building Character for any deck projects over other local competitors in Cincinnati

A bit of delay in the project start due to permit issues with the county, but once begun, work performed every day through completion. Did many little 'extra' things to enhance their work. Very pleased with the end result!
We agreed on the phone to a price for the work, and made an appointment for Bill, the owner, to appear and do the installation. I took a vacation day from work and stayed home to wait for Bill, but he did not appear, and did not phone or text. When I reached out to him, twice, he did not respond.
It great! My husband couldn't walk anymore and we needed this ramp. They were timely, they were efficient, the were here every day and got the job done. It looks great!
While they were nice, personable and offered good, competitive rates, some their responsiveness, communication and follow-up were not so great. They were good and cooperative while here for the work.
The communication from the Project Manager, Eian, started before the project began, which strengthened my confidence my porch would be completed in a timely manner. At each phase of the project, Eian was there to assist the workers and was always forthcoming with information regarding the next phase via email or in person. Everyone was always friendly and helpful with my questions. The craftsmanship, talent, and teamwork of this group of individuals was wonderful and I'm very pleased with the final product as I can utilize this beautiful screen enclosed porch all year round
Joe takes care of my mother's house & coordinates repairs with me from afar (AZ to OH). Both my mother & I regularly provide him with lists of things that need fixing & he schedules time to get them done. I trust him implicitly - to do an excellent job, to charge us fairly, to watch out for safety issues in her house. He does the work in such a way as to hold down costs for my mother, yet insure her comfort and safety. I visited my mother's house this month & was able to see the quality of the recent work. Everything was outstanding! Joe is a perfectionist with even the smallest jobs. We couldn't be more pleased with him - we highly recommend him! Joe is very fair in his pricing. Only about half of these charges was for labor. The rest was materials cost, as Joe picks up whatever we need for the job

Kevin was very responsive, reasonably priced and did a great job. I will recommend him to friends and will definitely have him back to do more work. I particularly like his communication both before and after to make sure we were satisfied. Very professional!

Shawn is awesome. He quoted me a price. Told me he would be there in a week to do the work. Was able to get there in 5 days. Work was completed in one day. I was late meeting him there and he waited patiently. Being a realtor it helps to have someone like Shawn to help me get repairs done in a timely manner. I use him on all my repairs
My deck ran along the entire back of the house and half-way around one side. He and one other worker replaced all rotting deck boards and supporting beams. They worked consistently and thoroughly until the job was completed. They took their time to make sure they did an excellent job and didn't make any short cuts in the job's completion. There were some support joists that hadn't been installed initially which they informed me about and repaired the deck so it is correct and sturdy. They did the job exactly as I had in mind and did it thoroughly. Great job! I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again to do any other carpentry work

I had a wooden deck of many years that I wanted to replace with the new type of decking material from TimberTech. I knew it would be costly but thought the investment would be worth it. I first reviewed and research the many type of decking materials and narrowed it down to a company called TimberTech. I then called 2 contractors that dealt only with TimberTech. Both estimates were very close so the price was irrelevant at this point in choosing the contractor. I had talked with Daren Hoelle 2 years ago at the Home & Garden Show and gave him the job. Darren is very down to earth and doesn't assume anything with checking if not sure of a product working with each other. We installed the "Evolution of TimberTeck and the balusters from another company. It turned out beautifully. Darren and his 2 employees spent first day leveling and squaring the original deck before starting. Many framing boards replaced. This was extra but wouldn't had it any other way. Starting with a level and squared deck makes all the difference in the world. Darren was easy to work with and had suggestions that I could relate and befefit from. I plan on using Hoelle Construction in the future if needed. Niced Job. Dav
I was amazed at how professional they were. They arrived on time, were courteous, cleaned up after themselves, wore the booties indoors and just seemed to try extra hard to have everything be perfect. They definitely have a customer for life and I will recommend them to all my friends.
