Training on using the Wiki Applications[edit]

I've just re-donated to support Wikipedia for another year. But, I think I only scratch the surface of using it and the other related Wiki offerings. How can I get training (e.g. videos) on how to use all of the offerings? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.132.217.186 (talk) 14:38, 22 September 2022‎

Twitter[edit]

The Twitter account @WiktionaryUsers ("Writing on behalf of the http://en.wiktionary.org community") last posted in 2013. I gather the account creator no longer has access to it. Is there someone at WMF who can assist in usurping the account (by providing verifiable bona fides; and/ or a WMF email address) so that it can again be used? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:49, 29 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There is also https://twitter.com/Wiktionary which is suspended. The reason is unclear but it could be trademark issues. If that is true, I think it is something WMF can make a claim about as the owner of the trademark. I think WMF will have less say about the "WiktionaryUsers" account at least from the standpoint of trademark. whym (talk) 02:21, 2 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Other groups I'm part of maintain a persistent small group of social-media-ambassadors who maintain contacts with the major platforms, know how the accounts are run, and think about how to help keep them active and help community maintain + curate their posts. The group should include staff and community members; contact emails for the accounts should probably be @ the org, precisely for these usurpation reasons (so here: wikimedia.org unless someone else wants to specialize in this) but forwarded to all members of the group. –SJ talk  01:34, 13 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I apologize for the delayed reply, Andy. We have been looking into this process and it is more complex than originally anticipated. I will keep you posted on updates and as we learn more. I appreciate your patience. Thank you. LDickinson (WMF) (talk) 19:39, 5 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I've restored this from the archives, in anticipation of the updates mentioned by LDickinson (WMF). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:34, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Think big! Open letter about Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Dear friends of free knowledge,

Wikimedia Commons is in crisis. There are numerous concerns and complaints about our central media platform, for many years. Therefore, this open letter asks the Wikimedia Foundation to Think big! about the future of Wikimedia Commons.

In late August 2022, we at the Commons Photographers User Group talked about Wikimedia Commons. The result of these and other talks is this open letter.

We invite everyone to sign this open letter to show how important Wikimedia Commons is to you. You may be a regular Commons contributor, a Wikipedian, an editor of Wiktionary or Wikivoyage, or maybe you represent an affiliation. We also invite other people who are involved with Commons directly or indirectly, maybe in the context of a cultural institution (GLAM).

Please inform others about this open letter.

Kind regards, Ziko (talk) 11:22, 12 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Unicode 11 case map transition[edit]

I'm looking for community help in reviewing the big table at Unicode 11 case map migration. We're going to rename or delete 560 pages, and I'm not sure if the planned action is appropriate in all cases. -- Tim Starling (WMF) (talk) 22:35, 16 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I've started reviewing the en.wikipedia.org ones @Tim Starling (WMF): Is there some reason w:ⓥ isn't going to get deleted by the script since the uppercase redirect goes to the same place? * Pppery * it has begun 02:37, 17 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's because Krinkle (who is working on this project with me) edited the redirect after the script was run. -- Tim Starling (WMF) (talk) 02:50, 17 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oh. I would have RfD-ed both cases of v instead, and did that for the rest of the circled letter pair. * Pppery * it has begun 03:02, 17 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I also noticed that the script is trying to move two different pages to the title w:St (technical rename). That's likely to cause a problem. * Pppery * it has begun 02:39, 17 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Another case that's mistaken: the clashing roman numeral redirects on Commons (c:Category:ⅰ etc.) as well as c:Category:ẖ can just be deleted since they are soft redirects that would have been deleted if they were hard. * Pppery * it has begun 03:02, 17 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's everything for pages in languages I speak ... * Pppery * it has begun 03:03, 17 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm going to delete a lot of the pages myself. The fact that I can't speak French is not a good excuse for screwing up the French wiki. There's no point moving the ligature ffi, which is a redirect to an article about ligatures, to Ffi, i.e. the three ASCII characters, that's just vandalism. -- Tim Starling (WMF) (talk) 00:05, 27 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

LGBTQIA+phobia and racism[edit]

Wiki-style canonical questions?[edit]

What about a Wiki site where people ask canonical questions and provide canonical answers?

I see it as a mix of Wikipedia, Quora, Stack Exchange, and libraries or encyclopaedias in that the content could be fully structured with Library of Congress style subject tags as well as a total ordering of cataloguing.

Maybe the answers could be freely edited as Wikipedia currently is. There's a chance I would like to see voting on criteria that the questions/answers are supposed to fulfil, like "accuracy", "stylistic neatness", "comprehensiveness" (doesn't leave anything out). Questions could also be tagged "answerability", like we are looking for specific questions with ideally one correct answer, not "What is the meaning of life?"

It could basically be like Wikipedia's version of Quora, taking out all the social media aspects of that site. Or it could be thought of as what Wikipedia already is, except instead of encyclopaedia articles, short, canonical questions and answers.

I'd love to see this happen. I noticed there is already the "Reference Desk" where people can ask questions, but it could be greatly expanded into its own site entirely. WikiQA or WikiQ or WikiQuest or WikiQuestions or something. Julkhamil (talk) 10:53, 28 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Julkhamil: There have been several proposals advanced like this: some are linked in the recent Wikianswers proposal, where you may wish to add your support or comments. Xeno (WMF) (talk) 17:13, 28 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Issue with Spring CEE 2022 regarding WMF funds[edit]

I need assistance regarding the Wikimedia CEE Spring 2022 event associated with these funds. The English Wikipedia edition of the event was never resolved. It ended on May 31, 2022, and no further information has been provided. The local English language organizer, User:KuboF Hromoslav, has not concluded the event and has not responded to messages. Both the Meta Wiki organizers and the English Wikipedia administrators have not been able to resolve this. It appears to me that either these funds were authorized and are now unaccounted for, or the English Wikipedia edition was not authorized as part of the project and it fraudulently claimed access to funds it did not have. Both of these seem to me to be very serious issues. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 06:07, 5 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Thebiguglyalien: Hi, I'm Chris, the Regional Program Officer for our funding programs supporting the CEE region. Thanks for bringing these concerns to my attention, and for attempting to reach out to other organizers to resolve this problem. I am following up with the main organizers for CEE Spring 2022 and KuboF Hromoslav to ascertain what the circumstances are here and why they may be happening. I will also invite KuboF to respond here directly as the concerns relate to the English Wikipedia event page they appear to have been managing and responding to questions about earlier this year. Invitation to attend “Ask Me Anything about Movement Charter” Sessions[edit]

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

Hello all,

During the 2022 Wikimedia Summit, the Movement Charter Drafting Committee (MCDC) presented the first outline of the Movement Charter, giving a glimpse on the direction of its future work, and the Charter itself. The MCDC then integrated the initial feedback collected during the Summit. Before proceeding with writing the Charter for the whole Movement, the MCDC wants to interact with community members and gather feedback on the drafts of the three sections: Preamble, Values & Principles, and Roles & Responsibilities (intentions statement). The Movement Charter drafts will be available on the Meta page here on November 14, 2022. Community wide consultation period on MC will take place from November 20 to December 18, 2022. Learn more about it here.

With the goal of ensuring that people are well informed to fully participate in the conversations and are empowered to contribute their perspective on the Movement Charter, three “Ask Me Anything about Movement Charter" sessions have been scheduled in different time zones. Everyone in the Wikimedia Movement is invited to attend these conversations. The aim is to learn about Movement Charter - its goal, purpose, why it matters, and how it impacts your community. MCDC members will attend these sessions to answer your questions and hear community feedback.

The “Ask Me Anything” sessions accommodate communities from different time zones. Only the presentation of the session is recorded and shared afterwards, no recording of conversations. Below is the list of planned events:

  • Asia/Pacific: November 4, 2022 at 09:00 UTC (your local time). Interpretation is available in Chinese and Japanese.
  • Europe/MENA/Sub Saharan Africa: November 12, 2022 at 15:00 UTC (your local time). Interpretation is available in Arabic, French and Russian.
  • North and South America/ Western Europe: November 12, 2022 at 15:00 UTC (your local time). Interpretation is available in Spanish and Portuguese.

On the Meta page you will find more details; Zoom links will be shared 48 hours ahead of the call.

Call for Movement Charter Ambassadors

Individuals or groups from all communities who wish to help include and start conversations in their communities on the Movement Charter are encouraged to become Movement Charter Ambassadors (MC Ambassadors). MC Ambassadors will carry out their own activities and get financial support for enabling conversations in their own languages. Regional facilitators from the Movement Strategy and Governance team are available to support applicants with MC Ambassadors grantmaking. If you are interested please sign up here. Should you have specific questions, please reach out to the MSG team via email: [email protected] or on the MS forum.

We thank you for your time and participation.

On behalf of the Movement Charter Drafting Committee,

MNadzikiewicz (WMF) (talk) 15:38, 7 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@MNadzikiewicz (WMF): Where is a text for:
  • Preamble,
  • Values & Principles,
  • Roles & Responsibilities (intentions statement)?
