Choosing a contractor was as difficult as it was frustrating in the beginning. Many places were unresponsive, too “busy” or would only take your project if you’d spend “X” dollars. I hated this process and thought it would never end, but that was until I came across Elite Contractors Services on Angies. Their gallery on Angies doesn’t speak to the true breadth and diversity of work he has done (I’ve told him, he needs to put more photos up, LOL - a little joke between him and I) but after working with him I understand why he hasn’t; he and his wife are busy responding to and making sure his customers are happy. We met Ken soon after engaging him. He is a very pleasant man with a wealth of experience and knowledge in the construction industry, and although he loves to have a good laugh he’s also a straight shooter, which I greatly appreciate. To have a General Contractor be as responsive and interested in your project was a breath of fresh air; even better was that he continued this responsiveness throughout the entire project! Once we had a contract established Ken put us in touch with his excellent Architect Ned. With his excellent eye for design and helpful suggestions, we were very pleased with our final design and couldn't be happier. We were ready and so was Ken. Some preliminary engineering checks were performed on our foundation and it was discovered that we didn’t have sufficient footers to support a second-story. Ken gave us the options we had and so we moved ahead with the additional scope of underpinning our foundation and lowering our basement by two feet since the slab would be destroyed. It was January 2022 at this point and even with supply chain constraints (especially with wood), COVID and inflation craziness Ken as he was somehow ahead of the curve and prepared enough with our project to be able to provide us with a 6 month estimate for everything to complete (July timeframe). I was skeptical to say the least and especially anxious because I had a construction loan with an interest rate lock banking on this man’s estimate. The underpinning was completed in two months as promised, all done by hand, insane!! The second story began and we were able to meet the entire Elite Contractors Service’s family! The workers Ken employs are all amazing people and excellent professionals who work exceedingly hard and put their heart and souls into their craft. They were also so efficient, they ripped off our old roof, and put up the new roof within a week. and even though they didn’t have to during those few days in between, they placed a huge tarp over our place to protect our home. I felt they treated our home as if it was their own home. In comparison, a house down the street from us was roof-less for a month before they got their materials in to build; meaning it was exposed to the weather and elements. During the project I was introduced to Ana Blanco, Ken’s better half who helped us with expenses, material purchasing such as tile, vanities, fixtures, lighting etc. She was super sweet, helpful and made that process straightforward and worry-free. When the finishing touches were ready to be made, Ken’s team were once again so helpful. They would ensure every detail was accounted for, especially specifics, such as mirror, light heights, or the placement of vanities for example. They painted and touched up spaces part of renovation, but also spaces that were affected indirectly by construction, and of course corrected any issues you had immediately. Ken called this his “Elite Treatment”, and Elite it was! My wife and I put our faith in Ken wholeheartedly, and we are glad we did, even with a few ordering issues and special orders he and his team were still able to hit the promised 6 month mark almost perfectly! I think Ken’s new nickname ought to be the “Magic Man.” We feel blessed to have Ken and his team on the job for home renovation, because not only did we make our home beautiful we were able to make a few friends along the way

We are super grateful and happy that we chose to work with PHS, Brandon, and Juan for our total home renovation in NE DC. The scope of our home renovation was to: tear out all existing hardwood, tear out the staircase across 4 levels of our home, reconfigure all interior walls, lay new hardwood flooring, tear our a chimney across 2 floors, and add a bathroom to our attic. This was a near, full-gut job. We ended up not touching our kitchen nor basement at all due to budget constraints. Breaking down our experience working with them: - Contract: PHS was one of the last contractors we reached out to, but Brandon ended up being one of the fastest to respond, come our to the house to take a look, and then eventually submit an incredibly detailed proposal. Brandon was willing to answer a million questions about the contract language, amend language where needed, and customize the proposal to us. Brandon was also willing to work with us to refine scope, separately price items, and adjust the contract in some areas to fit our budget. PHS came in middle of the pack on price which made us feel comfortable about our choice. We felt confident in Brandon and PHS that they would not nickel-and-dime us, bury us in change orders, or inflate the price in anyway. - Communication: I was blown away with the level of communication we had from start to finish on this project. Brandon would respond to every text, voicemail, or email in <24 hrs, and in most cases within an hour or two. I don't think a single day went by in our 10.5 month project where we didn't hear from Brandon or Juan in some regard. Brandon and Juan took effort to talk through choices, offer advice (both creative and construction), and ensure we were kept in the loop during months we were out of town. - Quality of Work: Brandon's onsite construction manager Juan was an absolute pleasure to work with. Juan has immense attention to detail, was willing to correct errors or minor mistakes without any questions/issue, and there were absolutely ZERO cut corners on our job. Brandon and PHS' mottos of "no cutting corners," "doing things the right way," and "making their customers happy/putting them first" were adhered-to from start to finish. When there were design flaws that our separate architect didn't catch, Brandon and team took the liberty to get it done the right way (with our permission) despite what the design showed. Near the very end of the project when we noticed light switch was in the wrong place, Brandon and team solved the problem with no questions asked. Brandon and Juan were truly interested in making us happy, ensuring we loved our home, and making sure they did things the right way, with high quality, and high professionalism. We didn't notice any cut-corners or "half-assed" work. - Schedule: if there is one less-than-stellar thing to report, it's that our initial 4-6 month construction schedule (after building permit issuance) ended up taking 9.5 months with a few odds and ends still to fix after we moved in. To be fair, there were some owner-directed scope changes that may have impacted the schedule on the magnitude of a few weeks, but nothing that would have caused work to completely stop in the meantime. Certainly Brandon and Juan hit some snags that were outside of their control: vendors getting COVID, scheduling delays getting inspections done, key staff getting sick, a handful of weather delays, but frankly work did not move as rapidly at times as we would have expected. The work was always done with high craftsmanship and quality, but there were several instances where it seemed like little-to-no work would get done in a given week. I think that perhaps the key staff and subs got spread thin on some competing projects, but things picked up once a separate project or two of theirs wrapped up and they could dedicate more staff to our project. All of this being said, Brandon was absolutely a man of his word and honored the clause in our contract that compensated us for the schedule overage per terms of our contract. The rent reimbursement clause in our contract was a big reason we decided to work with PHS and Brandon, and we were happy that he upheld his end of that bargain. It seems like schedules will always be busted on construction projects, so I don't think the schedule overage was anything unique to PHS, but our experience was no different. However, again, PHS and Brandon are unique and very accommodating to such schedule issues with their rent reimbursement promises. We cannot endorse PHS, Brandon, Juan, and their entire team enough. We were very nervous picking a contractor to gut and renovate our house while we left the area for several months, and Brandon and his team went above and beyond to assure us that everything would be okay, keep us in the loop, perform the work with high standards of quality, and be as accommodating to us as possible. My wife and I had absolutely no experience renovating a house, but Brandon and Juan made it easy on us. We trusted them with our family's home and we think you can too. We would hire them again in a heartbeat

We had a great experience with Ken and his team on our Rosemont, Alexandria expansion project. After sketching out what we wanted, we met with several contractors to request bids. Not only was Ken’s bid competitive, but he suggested several significant changes to the plans that we ended up incorporating into our design. The entire design / build process was fast and efficient, and we are extremely pleased with finished product. Throughout the construction, Ken was onsite daily and responsive to any issues that came up. It was clear that Ken has a wealth of experience in the field and enjoys what he does. I can’t say enough good things about the crew – they were friendly, talented, and professional. Their attention to detail was impressive and they went above and beyond in all aspects of their work. We also enjoyed working with Ana on the kitchen and bath design and finish selections. At the end of the day, Elite Contractors Services exceeded our expectations, and we hope to work with the team again on another project

We engaged Lakewood Home Builders to complete a 1000+ square foot second floor “pop-up” addition to our 1951 Cape Cod. The new second floor includes 2 new bathrooms and 4 new bedrooms, a laundry closet, all new roofing, flooring, and Hardie siding, additional updates to the existing first floor, a new front portico, and a nearly entirely new chimney. I could not recommend Lakewood more highly. Tim, Lance, John, and their team were extremely professional, trustworthy, in constant communication, and completed this very substantial project AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. The quality of their work was outstanding and we couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome of the project. Tim was our project manager and was very mindful of staying on budget. He was in daily communication with me throughout the project and always accessible. Furthermore, if there were any aspect of the project that we were not entirely pleased with, they were always willing to make it right, and did so quickly and without additional cost. As with any project of this scope, there were a couple of unanticipated issues that took us a little over the original contract budget. We also requested some additional work during the project that added some cost. Nevertheless, we are confident that Lakewood did their best to keep the project on-budget and on-time. If we had known how seamless and painless this project was going to be, we would have hired Lakewood to do it years ago. Thank you, Lakewood Home Builders for a first-rate experience and wonderful “new” home – we have already recommended them to friends and neighbors and will confidently continue to do so

Our neighbors have complimented the exterior design and how well the addition blends into the existing house. The redesigned interior is a gracious and welcoming space. The design is functional and we love the sense of light and space. It makes us very happy every time we walk into the new rooms. We greatly appreciated our project manager's attention to detail, high standards for execution, and overall great "wrangling" skills. He was great at talking us through projected workflow, discussing options, and troubleshooting. He earned our trust through his honesty about what was possible and what was not, his diligence, and overall superior work. We also want to acknowledge and appreciate Art Design's overall commitment to high-quality materials in the construction. We have great confidence in the integrity of the renovation due to both the materials and the craftsmanship exercised in construction

Our family decided to build an addition for our house that would replace our large deck with a two-story sunroom, dining room, and large second-story balcony. We also remodeled our foyer and sitting room at the same time; this was a large and complex project. At the advice of our architect, we met with Phoenix Home Services to scope the project. Steve Bowes, one of the owners, was the project lead, and he stayed closely involved the entire time. Scoping went pretty quickly, as our wonderful architect had detailed plans - we met a few times at the house to confirm elements of the plan, and high-level choices for materials, and even met at the Pella window showroom to select windows together. This was our first time doing a project like this, and it was very reassuring to have so much involvement from Phoenix during this phase of the project. When it came time to sign the contract, Steve reviewed all the terms, in-scope work and materials, and anything that would be considered out-of-scope. This was in the middle of the pandemic, and despite supply chain issues and other uncertainties, I felt we came to a very fair agreement and were given an estimate for when the project would begin, which was several months out. This wasn't a surprise, and actually fit our own schedule very nicely. The payment schedule was also extremely fair, with a portion due up front as a deposit, and then scheduled milestone payments throughout the project - it gave me some reassurance that there was clear motivation to finish construction on time and showed that Phoenix had some skin in the game as well. As we approached the start date for the project, we had several touchpoints with Steve, and we were well prepared once things got underway. This is when we were first introduced to Les, who led the exterior crew - they built a fortress of an addition. I was concerned that these new rooms would feel less sturdy that the rooms they attach to, but it is incredibly well built and is as solid as any original portion of this house. As the exterior work progressed, we also got to meet Bob, the master carpenter, who led the interior crew. Bob is incredibly skilled at what he does, and we appreciated how patient he was with us as we changed our minds several times about the design of our interior work and the finishes and details. His work was incredible, and as funny as it sounds, we miss having him around every day! No project is without issues, though, and we ran into unforeseen problems with the design that resulted in a major change- we were faced with the prospect of having to remodel our primary bathroom unexpectedly. Steve handled this situation as well as could possibly be expected - he was able to get a bathroom remodeling crew assigned quickly, gave us a generous price for the labor, and put forth every effort to turn this change into a positive. The silver lining is that we got to work with Martin, who did an exquisite job on our bathroom - the attention to detail he had on our tile work was outstanding, and we're thrilled with outcome. As the project wrapped up, the team was great about managing our mutual punch-list for touch ups, fixes, and miscellaneous items. They finished on time, and the end result looks amazing; we couldn't be happier. We're not calling anyone else for the next project we do - Phoenix proved that they do great work, care about their customers, and delivered on their promise

Matt is a very kind person whose team was very nice to work with. They were respectful, clean, trustworthy, and made sure they listen to our wishes and concerns. They worked very hard so we could move in before Christmas. The projects after that were slower but we had added several projects in the process and overall they got everything accomplished in about 4 months. Matt always reacted on time to e-mails and calls. Sometimes is was hard to reach his team to find out when they would be coming and what they would work on but one call to Matt and he made sure we got a reply. Green products and limited chemicals were very important to us and his team not only respected that but also collaborated with us which products to use. We had a major water problem in the basement and they were able to fix it with additional drains, a sump pump and a successful concepts to redirect the water from the house. We have had a lot of rain so far and the basement has been dry, yeah! The built-in closets were done by a different team and took more time than we expected. They didn't turn out the way we wanted but Matt worked with us on that, reduced the price and had the team do some changes. We heard many horror stories about other contractors from friends so we were worried starting this big project. Overall we had a very good experience with Willis Builder. The majority of projects were done very nicely and to our satisfaction and Matt was willing to work with us on the couple things we were not so satisfied with. We also know, should there be anything in the future, Matt will not hesitate to come and fix it. We would work with him and his team anytime again

"Our deck caught fire last summer and we contracted Chris Heinz to do the rebuilding and replacement of our fire-damaged exterior. Chris was wonderful to work with! He worked with our insurance company tirelessly and also kept us informed every step of the way. He and his crew removed our old deck and siding, and built a new deck, a landing and stairs off our kitchen, installed a new sliding door and four windows, replaced our siding and trim, and installed new outdoor lighting. There were a few delays due to the pandemic and materials being readily unavailable from one of the manufacturers, but the timeframe was reasonable given the circumstances. Chris and his crew did an amazing job and we couldn’t be happier. We love our beautiful new deck and the new siding and trim. We get so many compliments from our neighbors and passers-by! We will definitely go to Chris next time we need work on our house and recommend him to everyone!

"We selected this company because we wanted to renovate our master bathroom and add lighting in certain other rooms. They could do both for us. Having recently been through a master bathroom remodel in another house in another region, we knew what we were getting into, and what we wanted. They gave us an early estimate, which seemed reasonable, and wanted several thousand dollars to draw up the design (note: we didn't change the floor plan and we knew basically what we wanted). We met with subcontractors to pick out vanities, tile, and granite. We already had picked out our hardware and fixtures. After this, they gave us our actual estimate - about 60 percent higher than their original estimate! We tried to make sense of their rationale but at the end of the day there was a high dollar amount we could not account for, despite repeated questions asked by us. We did not select the highest end extras that would have escalated the cost. At the end, we went with another contractor (who came in at our original estimate and delivered a beautiful product), selected an electrician on our own, and chose to forego our money for their (TCB) design fee.
