We as general contractors always say.., “we are only as good as our subcontractors”. How true it is. Working with Jake Blair was a great pleasure and a wonderful experience. He was our mason subcontractor on a 17k sq large custom home that we built. This magnificent home, resembling an Italian villa from the seventeenth century, has stone veneer on most of the exterior walls with arches. All windows and large doors had stone surrounds with very little or no tolerances built in. Four large fireplaces with stone mantles and a large stone entry was purchased in Europe and shipped to the USA in crates. After receiving all materials, under his supervision, all pieces were installed just as it was in the old country! His work was a significant master piece and added incredible design and value to the home. Jake is professional, reliable, and delivers amazing work. Greg Jones to the rescue. I originally went with another mason, however after a few days on the job, I was very unsatisfied with this other individual's work ethic and professionalism and had no confidence in our timeline. Then I called Jones Masonry... This was a large, labor intensive job requiring the highest level of skills for general masonry work ( approx 1200 square feet of patio space and walkways, with significant elevation changes and steps, a complete stone and brick oven (not an insert); a full pizza oven, extensive walls and stone veneer on the house). Before Greg Jones (owner) showed up he worked with me on my plans and we cultivated a solid working relationship; he made sure he understood what I wanted. The next day and everyday thereafter he and his son Matt were on the job with 3-4 additional workers. He has completely changed the look and feel of our house giving us a home we can be proud of. Greg was very agreeable to employ any style we wanted (for us it was mainly a Mountain/Lake Tahoe feel). Greg, Matt, and crew were punctual and stood by their original bid, even when we encountered a few wrinkles that likely involved more cost and labor than they had originally anticipated. Attitude- Great attitude; I had to balance several sub-contractors, crowded into a tight, muddy driveway. Greg and his crew never complained, just put their heads down and got the job done with smiles and a great attitude. We live in the Santa Cruz Mountains and many folks are disturbed by the drive, but it was never an issue for these guys. Great crew of guys, I would use them again any day. Highly recommended. Greg provided quote for services, was very professional. Team (Greg and his sons Erik and Alex) was always on time, very flexible, clean and quality of work was exceptional. Team removed upper brick, and replaced with drywall, plaster and then painted Team applied stone veneer (we picked it out) on top of the existing brick (you would never know there was any brick) Team distressed, stained and installed wood mantel to our specifications. There was a brief pause while we had the opening measured for a glass door. Team installed glass door which we ordered from a fireplace store (store came and measured and then ordered door for us).

Our contractor took off the facing of our fireplace and with it came part of the firebox. Rudy came and took a look and gave me an estimate to rough in the firebox (and to even out the edges) and another estimate to reface the fireplace with stone veneer. I hadn't quite decided on how to reface but Rudy gave me some ideas and sent me to the PBM showroom in Mountainview. I picked out stone and Rudy went to the yard to pick it all up and select stones (i didn't want anything too thick) for my hearth and mantel. Rudy, Jack and Jack roughed in the FP and then came back to lay the new stone. The FP looks fantastic and they were so helpful throughout the process with ideas and in providing a finished product exactly in line with my taste.

One word, Excellent. Joan Hernandez is the specialist+designer for designed and oversee the work. We are very happy with her design, professionalism and responsiveness. She understood our requirements, showed us her design with a 3d model and made many alternations, costing for many options. We went back and forth many times and she showed lots of patience and professionalism and help us to arrive at final plan. She even took us to garden supply few times over to guide/help us choose the materials, colors to match the scenery around. The work started on the scheduled day and completed according to our expectations. All through the process, Maria and her crew did a thorough job with all the meticulousness needed for the curved corners, rounded circle we had in the design with double border and all. Special shout out to Erik who was an excellent worker. Joan visited the site many times and have been in constant touch with us to address any issues changes we wanted. And the estimated cost is what we payed as well. This year we had the sitting walls to be clad with a thin stone veneer to match rest of the backyard. We went with stucco first time to reduce cost. So Joan gave us few options and worked with us to make our choice. She came with us to Garden Supply to check out many options to help us choose materials. Luis and his crew worked thru all the rain delays and completed the work last week. All through this entire process we are very happy with their office, esp. Julie who handled material orders and schedule. We always got almost immediate response either by phone or text messages whenever we wanted to discuss any issues or rework. I highly recommend Joan and Black Diamond for paving. We are very happy with how it all turned out. Overall, very satisfied with the pavers and walls. One thing that I am bit unhappy is with the plants and the drip system. The installed drip system is very spotty and lead to many plants did not survive. Joan is working on getting this reworked now, Will keep posted on how that will turn out.
