Alexander Company

The Alexander Company did an excellent job with our window replacement. An easy company to do business with, everyone was cordial and professional. The installation crew was polite, professional, quick, and kept the installation site clean and safe. My only caution would be: plan well in advance; our project was three months from contract signing to window installation. There could be several reasons for this extended schedule: our order was a custom color, and California is in the middle of wildfires and a pandemic. All-in-all, we're very happy with the end result, and if we plan to replace another window or two, we'll certainly go to Alexander Company first.

The Alexander company crew did a completely wonderful job--I can't praise them too highly. To begin with, we spent a good deal of time with Jeff Alexander, figuring out what grid patterns we wanted for each of the windows, relying in part on his excellent advice. The work itself was scheduled not too far out once we'd negotiated and signed the contract. We are completely satisfied regarding both the process of installing the windows and the final product. With gaping holes (temporarily) where windows used to be and work in progress, there was obviously a lot of necessary disruption, and potential for chaos. But the crew got the entire job done in a little more than one week, and each day put things together so that we could go on living in the house while they worked. Throughout, they were terrific to work with. They were neat in their work, cheerful and friendly and communicative, and diligently kept our furnishings and stuff covered to protect them from dust etc. There was a perfect clean-up at the end of the job as well. And a careful explanation of how various features of the windows worked. The quality of the work was outstanding, and -- after we had someone else stain the oak-on-the-inside windows and framing--they are completely beautiful, and have transformed every room into a much better looking space. This was a big home-improvement investment, but we definitely feel that it was worth it.

This company doesn’t provide minimal customer service if the job is small. I started the process to replace two windows (one is broken) at the end of July 2017. The job is still incomplete. The wrong glass was ordered and I was advised not to install the windows (on October 30, 2017) because it would be difficult to replace the glass after installation since the windows are high. As a result it has been over 3 months since I ordered the windows and I still have a broken window. The rain has started and there has been no follow up from the company about when/if the windows will be installed or even if the glass has been ordered. If you have small job this company will not provide minimally competent work or customer service. You will be ignored after it accepts your deposit and you will have to chase it get any information about the status of your order.

We dealt with Walter for the estimate and he was easy to work with. Estimate seemed fair. Overall pretty good experience. The only issue we had was that after the guys patched the drywall inside they promptly went outside and, in the course of hammering down the chicken wire for the stucco, promptly knocked much of the new plaster right off the walls.

I’m really pleased with my recent window replacement project with Alexander Co. Before hiring them, I had done some homework by looking at the online reviews (including the Angie’s List). Alexander Co. really got very good reviews. My own experience confirmed the good things most people said about them. My window project was actually not a big one, but Alexander Co. still showed their commitment to satisfy their customers no matter the job was small or big. At the beginning, the estimator (Walter) discussed the job with me, explained different options, and gave me a reasonable offer. When I still had questions, I emailed Walter, and he responded promptly. When the ordered window arrived, the office called me, and changed the installation date to accommodate my schedule. On the installation day, Jose and James arrived on time. They carefully covered my living room before starting work. They looked and behaved very friendly and professional. When a small unexpected issue came up, they talked to Walter and came up with a smart solution which didn’t cost me extra money. In short, I’m very happy about their work. I’ve heard that Alexander Co. can also do other home improvement stuff besides windows (such as siding, etc.). If that’s true, I will definitely consider them for my future projects.

These guys were wonderful. In June 2012 the crew from Alexander Window Specialists installed our new replacement windows in SF's Outer Sunset. We waited to post this review in case there were any problems .... but none during order, installation, or after. A contractor we like to use on our house highly recommended Alexander Window Specialists. We had another company also bid on the 15 window replacement job. I'm sure they would have done a good job, but we just didn't connect with the salesperson who met with us and prepared the bid. Walter at Alexander won us over. We visited their shop in Burlingame for more details and liked the feel of the place. What we heard from Walter about brand name replacement windows matched up with the research we'd found at Consumer Reports. Walter knew the products, was very attentive to our needs, went over everything with us to make sure we knew what we were getting, the SF city code requirements, etc. At one point he even made an extra trip to our house to physically show us what a window frame's design would mean to our current view. He kept us informed of the status of the order and installation timeline. I'm not always the most patient of people particularly when working with these kinds of details, but Walter always stayed positive and on-point. On time -- about 4 weeks after order -- all the windows were installed in 1 day. We spoke with John Alexander, one of the owners who scheduled the install date -- he assured us the install crew would be respectful of our outdoor plants and interior spaces. The crew, led by Jose, was professional. Drop cloths everywhere, cloth protectors worn over shoes to protect floors. Fascinating to watch them tear out the old windows, install the new ones, and replace window trim, etc. From the web and other contractors, it's apparently not typical to stuff insulation between the replacement window and the wall before covering with window trim. But when we requested this, they obliged. They cleaned up everything and were done in 1 day. No issues, no problems. The windows are amazing -- no more breezes when standing next to a closed window. The furnace goes on less frequently. And the windows look great. The window styles that Walter suggested were perfect; the installation was thoroughly professional. One minor issue was addressed immediately by Mr. Alexander. The SF city inspector said he was impressed with the work when he did a walk-through a week later... and he'd seen a lot of window jobs. So it's months later, we've had people in to paint the window sills and trim (Certa Pro SF at 79 Wool Street), replace window shades (Maxwell Window Shades, Judah Street), and hang drapes (Sylavnus Draperies, Taraval Street). All local merchants with excellent craftspeople and personable, professional service. The folks at Alexander Window were great to work with every step of the way. We highly recommend them.

The two new windows were to completely update the look of the front of my house. My house had a 5 foot high brick veneer wall with high set windows and a brick walled entry which while private, was completely unwelcoming. I tore down all of the brick and the windows Jeff installed are centered on the wall and very welcoming This construction project was extensive since other than the existing window headers, all new framing was needed. Jeff's team removed two windows high up on my wall, all wood paneling and working with a fully open framed wall they created two new window frames centered on my wall. They did a perfect alignment job. Everything is level and centered. They insulated the wall, used plywood, wired and stucco finished the entire wall leaving a scratch coat to the measurements I specified for the future installation of stone veneer. Inside, they sheet rocked openings, and textured the wall. They installed redwood trim on the outside matching all trim on all of my windows, set the nails and filled the nail holes and either restuccod or applied sealant making the trim ready for paint. Jeff's team even took on fixing stucco work under one of my old windows left by a previous contractor. His team was very professional and easy to communicate with. They arrived by 9 and worked until 5 every day. They would have started earlier, but I am a bit far from their office. Jeff himself was very accommodating. Explained all of my options, and pulled the permit for me. Inside, they sealed off their work area to avoid extensive dust inside my house and covered carpets. They also did a really good job of cleaning up each day.

We have been slowly changing the windows in our home and we've used Alexander Company. Prices are not cheap but that largely reflects the window we chose. John is very responsive and presents all options. I like that he works with a few different window companies so we don't get sold into one manufacturer.
